“He enjoys bossing people around, it suits him,” a human who had come in behind the group remarked as he made his way to the bar. Seemingly with the group, he stayed behind slightly. This man was lean, in a wiry, muscular way but his eyes were full of a quiet intelligence. “This tavern looks amazing. This bar was once on the Viking, wasn’t it?”

Atticus Wolf

The grin faded instantly, Nakuto placing down the tankard she had been in the process of filling and leaning across the bar to offer full scrutiny to the newcomer.
“It was,” she replied cautiously. “What do you know of it? Did you serve on the Viking?”

“Me? No, I was never in Starfleet but I am acquainted with two gentlemen who served aboard her. Our paths crossed a few times in our own occupations.” Atticus answered Nakuto with a casual smile. The man may have never served in Starfleet, but he had the unmistakable presence of a person who held himself to a high professional standard and was disciplined. “One of them has a lot of skill with vivid descriptions and stories, as well as an eye for artwork. He drew a picture of the Vikings lounge in his spare time one day, it was good enough for me to recognize the bar here.”

“I am sure my sister would be interested in that artwork,” Mirai replied. “It might even make for an interesting decorative companion to the bar itself.”

Before Johann could follow he heard the man talk and stopped and turned around slowly and looked at the man, his amused look stayed on his face. He took a few steps closer to the man, looking him up and down appreciatively. The older man looked at Nakuto and nodded as if confirming something then turned his attention to the other man “The Viking was destroyed some months ago” He said in a calm tone “But I understand this is a similar establishment Mr. Wolf” The two had never met but he was aware of the other man and his impressive reputation. He turned to Mira “You have some relations to Captain Kara Nakuto I assume, I have a cousin on that ship, he holds her in high regard”

Johann Karlson

“As do the two men I am familiar with, Mr Karlson,” Atticus replied as if the man was familiar to him as well. In truth, Atticus had found it was well worth his time to make sure he knew the names and faces of people of import in places he visited, whether they be officials, businesspeople or people with more notable skillsets. “One of the men in particular was quite reluctant to talk of her, but you could see in his eyes that she meant something to him. High regard indeed if that one held some kind of feelings for her.”

“Indeed, she meant, and continues to mean, something to a great many people,” the half-Klingon murmured, her eyes falling to stare at a point on the bartop. Or perhaps through it, to the memories still drawn into the ether. “In spite of Starfleet’s attempt to destroy her reputation and her name.”

“Captain Nakuto is my sister,” Mirai responded, her eyes darting from Karlson to Wolf, caught offguard by the mention of her sibling and her former, troubled home. “When I revealed to her my plans for opening this establishment, she had the bar shipped out to me. There had been a changeover in command on the Viking and the new captain had sought to instigate a more modern decor.”
One hand caressed the heavy, wooden countertop. “I have heard the tales and rumours of what occurred on that ship. But this bar is dead and decorated wood and nothing more. And I was not about to let such a marvellous piece slip through my fingers because of some campfire stories.”

“It was well worth the effort,” Atticus admitted, running his own hand over the bar. “It’s a fabulous piece.”

She turned once more to Karlson. “From what Kara has told me of your cousin, I would expect him to agree with me. My sister used to call him her rock and the person she went to when she needed to make sense of things. He sounds like a good man. And a good friend. At a time when my sister was in great need of both.”

Johann turned to the woman with clear surprise on his face, lips parted and eyes slightly widened. He covered himself so quickly that it might have been just the turning of his head “I see, well young Peter does have a way about him” He said with a smile and a nod of his head.

The Klingon Lord stuck his head out of the door and glared at Karlson. “KARLSON! Get up here! Party’s starting! Bring your friend!” he yelled and then he looked at Mirai and smiled. In a much lower voice he said “And I hope you aren’t so busy that you can’t find the time to join us. I’ll keep you a spot open near me..” and he winked and the laughed loudly and disappeared.

Urg, Lord Duroc

“I have no intention of missing out on the best party in town!” Nakuto called back to Duroc, resuming the pouring of drinks but still watching Karlson and Wolf closely, in case either had more to add on the USS Viking and its former captain.

  • Mirai Nakuto (Owner - tangqa’ Tavern)

Johann shook his head “Well Mr. Wolf you heard the large Klingon, feel free to join us” He said with a smile turning back to Mirai and started walking towards the Klingon area “Peter tends to be a private person these days but he’s always spoken fondly of his times on the Viking and of your sister, I would be glad to share a drink and speak of old friends” He said with a smile and a nod before moving upstairs.

Johann Karlson

“I would be honoured to join you,” Atticus acknowledged and looked up the stairs at the departing Karlson. Looking back at Mirai, he glanced over at other small kegs and bottles. “Want a hand lugging anything upstairs? I have a feeling it will become an expensive night for someone. Shall we join them before the Klingon Lords’ ardour escapes his trousers and comes running downstairs?”

Nakuto roared with laughter at Wolf’s comment, her own eyes darting briefly in the direction of the upper level, before falling again to the several casks of bloodwine piled high behind the bar.
“Take this,” she accepted his offer, lifting one of the heavy barrels as if it were filled with no more than air. “You look strong enough to handle it.”

The upstairs was quiet… too quiet.

As the top of the stairs were reached, a riotous eruption of roars of appreciation and celebration erupted that could be heard throughout the building. Urg’tohn, Lord of House Duroc and Chosen of the Builder stood up and bellowed “YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! COME AND DRINK, EAT, AND DISCOVER THAT TONIGHT THE BUILDER HAS BLESSED US ALL!!!!!” and the crowd erupted again.

Urg, Son of Kvaar’ton The Builder

Jóhann joined the Klingons, an amused grin on his face “I see your rise in station has not dampened your spirits or stifled your lungs” He said to Urg

Johann Karlson

“Never!” Urg yelled and grinned. “If one cannot find time to enjoy life, then one is destined to become a miserable bastard… and probably Chancellor.” and he laughed loudly again. He looked past Johann and eyes the stairwell. “So where is the fetching owner of this place? Surely she wants to come and enjoy the fruits of her labors?”

Urg, Son of the Builder

Atticus Wolf

Johann chuckled “All good things come when it is their time my friend” The thin man took a seat, crossing his legs and leaning back in a casual manner “Being acquainted with running an establishment or twelve in my day I’ve learned that one mustn’t rush the good times”

Johann Karlson

Moments later, the bar owner appeared at the top of the stairs, serving apron now discarded and with a large barrel of bloodwine tucked beneath each arm. Behind her two servers, one Klingon, the other Orion, brought forth the platter of ales for Karlson, several tankards of bloodwine and a large tray of colourful cocktails dressed in tropical garnishes. As they began to tend to the other patrons, Mirai stepped forward and placed one barrel of bloodwine before K’vorth and then a second before Urg.

“To the builder!” she roared. “And to the woman who provides the wine for you all to honour him!”

  • Mirai Nakuto (Owner - tangqa’ Tavern)

Urg stared at her for a long moment and then said “Surely the exquisite purveyor of such fine drink would find it in her heart to sit with a lowly and humble servant of the Builder and allow him to show her proper thanks as they get more properly acquainted?” and he stood up and gestured for her to sit next to him. “Please… join me. It would be my honor to share fare with one such as you.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Mirai nodded and settled into the offered seat. Leaving her servers to tend to the rest of the gathering, she personally filled Urg’s cup, followed quickly by her own, then lifted from the table a large bowl of fresh and squirming gagh. Waving the bowl beneath her companion’s nose, she wondered if his palate possessed the refinement to detect delicate hints of chilli pepper, cumin and garlic? Or whether the mouthwatering odour of soil and fresh blood would dominate completely?

  • Mirai Nakuto (Owner - tangqa’ Tavern)

Urg looked at her oddly for a moment and then said “These smell… different. Is that… is that cumin?! GODS BE PRAISED!!! Beautiful and with a sense of taste, too! That swill most try to claim as gagh isn’t fit for a targ’s bowels. This, though…” and he grabbed a handful of squirming serpent-worms and bit down, crushing them and drinking their blood before chewing and swallowing. “Delicious.” he said with a grin and took the bowl and held it for her… something no Klingon Lord would do to a bar-keep, let alone only a half Klingon one, especially in public… but he didn’t seem to care. “Come, enjoy with me.” he said just under the sound of revelry around him. He looked at her and smiled.

Urg’tohn, Son of the Builder

Johann took a more conservative approach to eating the Gagh, he produced two sticks from his person he used to carefully pick up each wriggling worm and placing it in his mouth, chewing methodically, outwardly he seemed to enjoy the taste. “Yes, quite excellent” He complimented the barkeep, inclining his head slightly. He took a deep drink of his ale and continued eating, he wasn’t as fast as the Klingons at eating but he did not dishonour himself by drinking less. The older man looked decidedly odd in his fine suit and funny way of eating Klingon cuisine but he also seemed at ease around the raucous laughter and revelry around him “Decidedly better then the last time I had Gagh, standard Imperial Naval foodstuffs never matches the homemade stuff”

Johann Karlson

“I believe most of the ship food is based on someone having lost a bet.” Urg said and clapped the man on the shoulder.

Urg, Lord Duroc

bump

Johann nodded slowly “That does sound like something the Klingon High Military command would do, I always thought it was some sort of Klingon Bravado” He deliberately made his voice deeper and gruffer spoke in fluent Klingon “Big strong Warrior does not need taste or a healthy meal” His accent was that of an outer Colony Klingon Merchant. He chuckled and continued in Standard “It’s a shame you don’t have proper mess halls, the things your chefs can do with minimal resources is impressive, I always try to have a Klingon Chef working at my restaurants.”

Johann Karlson

“Come to the Kavaar’ton! We have a full mess with kitchen! We only use replicated foods when we travel for long periods on…” and he grinned, “… business.” and then he laughed loudly.
