Karilan smiled. Looking at her, the excitement was evident. ” First starship I ever worked on. You never forget your first.” and they laughed.

Karilan

“I suppose so,” Kaili chuckled and then was silent for a moment; pondering what her favourite memory was. Finally she said, “For me it’s not just one moment, but a lot of small, almost every day things. Like, whenever neither of us had to go to school or work in the morning or an early appointment or something and it was warm enough, we would get the picnic blankets and lay down in the backyard and watch the stars appear in the night sky.”

Karilan smiled and said “That sounds lovely.” They looked out the window by the tub. The city was beautiful at night… but it was an artificial night. “I do miss the stars…”

Karilan

“So do I,” Kaili whispered softly as she followed Karilan’s gaze. Slipping one arm around their waist, she kissed their shoulder tenderly before resting her head there. “I like being on Oed, but at times it’s unnerving that we can never see the sky. I’ve lived on starships and space stations before and of course you can’t see the stars from every place there either. But you know that as soon as you walk back into a room with windows there they are. Of course I know that the stars are still where they have been for time immemorial. And still it sometimes feels as if they no longer exist,” she whispered softly, almost a little wistfully.

Karilan nodded and then laid their head on hers. “I have had that feeling more than once since I have been here. I don’t like it.” They paused for a long moment and then said “There are rumors that the new Governor intends to move everyone off world and lease the city to species who can survive without the dome. I heard some of the contractors who did work on the shop talking about it. I think that sounds… off. From what I have read about him, he does not seem like the type.”

Karilan

Kaili chuckled softly. “You are right. From my meetings with him he didn’t strike me as they type of person who’d do that either,” she replied while gently caressing Karilan’s side. After an almost imperceptible pause, she asked, “Can I tell you a secret?” She trusted Karilan completely, hence why she hadn’t asked if they could keep a secret, but she wanted to give them the choice to say no. After all, not everyone wanted to know secrets.

Karilan pressed slightly against the caress and smiled at her. “You can tell me anything you want. And I promise to always hold your confidence as sacred to me.” They leaned over and kissed her lightly, smiling as they did so.

Karilan

Kaili smiled as their lips touched. This was as far from what she had expected this day would bring as she could imagine and yet she was beyond happy about everything that had happened. She had never believed in love at first sight and instead always thought that it would take a long time to fall in love with someone. But here she was, undeniably falling hard for Karilan and feeling nothing but pure happiness.

Breaking their kiss after a few long moments, Kaili whispered, “I actually had a meeting with the Governor earlier today. It was about my work, public health and social services here on Oed. But at one point he mentioned that he does plan to get rid of the dome. But not so that other species can live here, species who wouldn’t need the dome. He wants to terraform the planet and put a planetary shield up so that we all can live here and actually see the sky again. And of course he wants to expand the city and that will be much easier when the dome is no longer necessary.” As she spoke, she looked at Karilan, curious how they would react to that information.

Karilan’s eyes lit up in surprise. “The Governor met with you? That’s fantastic! Will you be helping the administration, then? What will you be doing specifically?” they asked, focused so much on Kaili’s opportunity that they only the realized what the rest of what she said entailed. They sat back for a moment and looked at her in stunned silence. “That… that is a very bold idea. I mean, it is conceivably possible… and there are a few species who have developed planetary shielding… but those are for protection from orbital bombardment and the like. In order to return this to a class M planet, the shield would have to allow for the filtration of -” and they smiled and their voice trailed off. They smiled and said “Listen to me… engineering planetary shields instead of enjoying you. So please… tell me about the opportunity you have. And tell me about the Governor. I saw him at the inauguration, but that is all I really have to go on.”

Karilan

“I’d happily listen to you talking about engineering things till the end of time,” Kaili said softly and tenderly cupped Karilan’s cheek with one hand. “I love the passion I see in your eyes and hear in your voice when you talk about these things.” Leaning forward, she kissed them again. Tenderly at first, but quickly much more passionately. At the same time she moved her body, without breaking their kiss, so that she ended up sitting on their lap. She almost forgot that Karilan had asked a few questions and that she should probably answer those. So it was with a soft sigh and a little reluctantly that she broke their kiss and whispered, “He made me the new Director of Medical and Social Services. Without even asking beforehand if I want the job!” She laughed softly and shook her head before kissing Karilan again.
