The Grotto was an upscale restaurant in the financial district of the main part of the city. Secluded, quiet, private, and discriminating; many sought a reservation.

Few managed.

Tonight there was a private table reserved for a party of two. The staff had been selected by the Manager specifically to handle this pair. The Sommelier was prepared. The chef was cooking for them himself. The Maitre’D waited with baited breath for the car to arrive.

Across town, there was a knock at the door of the penthouse apartment of one of the tallest residential buildings. The Governor of OED V stood there - black suit with detailed red vest and tie over a black shirt - with two dozen blue and yellow Sythlint roses on his hand.

Sinayda had taken her time getting ready for dinner with Kenzo. They didn’t often dress up and go out, so tonight was special. She’d chosen a rose gold shimmering gown
that looked like liquid metal had been poured over her body, with no back to speak of except for a few places where a very slender tie crossed her skin to hold the thing securely on her form. It was a halter style that hugged her figure and flared toward the bottom.

She’d dabbed a perfume she knew he liked on her neck and wrists then slipped her feet into sexy heels. The door chime sounded as she did the last touch up to her makeup and slipped crystal earrings on.

When Sin opened the door and saw Hyrushi, she caught her breath. “You look fabulous, Kenzo. Sometimes I forget how handsome you are because I try not to see you that way—for my own sake.” She stepped out of the way. “Please, come in.”

Kenzo stepped in and gave her a long, appraising glance. He smiled and said “You are as beautiful as ever, Sinayda… perhaps more so.” and held the flowers out to her and gave her a deep bow. Was it necessary? Not particularly. But Kenzo did respect Sinayda more than anyone… and he knew she liked it when he did so.

Rising up, he looked appreciatively at the apartment. “I am glad you have had a chance to settle in. The place looks amazing, Sin.” and he looked back at her and smiled and said “Almost as wonderful as it’s resident.” To some, the words would be flattery; perhaps a soft come-on for later. But after years together… as friends, co-conspirators, fellow prisoners, lovers, and fighters in their own rights… it was common knowledge between them that Kenzo did not say things just to flatter. At least, never to her. To her, no matter the pain it caused them or the danger it put either in, his words had been and always would be truth.
