Joseph and Neema exchanged a look and a knowing smile, Joseph spoke “The Cardassian war was not a taxing affair for me at least not compared to the Dominion War, I’d even hesitate to call it a war anymore or any conflict since the Klingon War of the 22nd century. But in that conflict, we spent most of our time hunting those deemed too dangerous to be allowed to continue, war criminals, spies, despots. We hardly ever served on the front lines until the armistice and then we were redeployed” He said but before he continued Neema spoke “This was around the Time Starfleet started having dedicated counselors on their ships and stations and not just psychologists working as general medical staff. Most of the team received counseling after the conflict ended but I didn’t see that heavy an impact on them at the time”

Kaili nodded here and there as she listened attentively to what both of them said.

Joseph nodded at her explanation “I’ve served during most major Federation conflicts in over thirty years including the Cardassian, Klingon, and Dominion wars. I spent the majority of the Dominion War as a General but I was on Betazed during the liberation” His face turned solemn and Neema continued “I arrived during the aftermath and it was a truly distressing time but I like to think that we managed to pull through fairly well” She put a hand on her husband’s arm and squeezed gently and Joseph seemed to snap back to the moment “Yes I think we did, therapy did help but chasing after escaped war criminals with my wife and my brother was very therapeutic.” he smiled slightly “I like to think of my work here as retirement of sorts, It’s good hard work and rewarding and organizing a police force is a simple matter after running much of an entire Marine Division” He said with a smile “I’ve had a long time to get over my years of war so I am willing to answer any questions you may have.”

Joseph and Neema

Watching them closely, a tender smile tugging at the corners of her lips, Kaili was silent for a few moments. His words had conjured up some memories of her own and eventually she said, “If worked with two Betazoids who were there during the Occupation. They weren’t among those who fought the Jem’Hadar telepathically, but of course they felt everything, heard everyone’s thoughts.” She shook her head and left it at that. Instead she continued, “I’m glad you two found healthy coping skills to deal with and work through everything you have experienced. That’s important. Especially considering that those memories, those experience never truly leave us.”

Joseph nodded several times at her point regarding the Betazoids “Well we’ve had a long time to deal, besides I may be older than my wife by a few years but she’s older than me by at least three centuries giving her plenty of experience how to cope” Neema rolled her eyes at the paradoxical comment “There have only been seven other Lar hosts before. I haven’t yet reached 300 years yet.” She said exasperated as Joseph grinned widely, greatly amused by her reaction “Now tell me something about yourself doctor” The Trill asked.

Joseph and Neema

Kaili chuckled softly as she listened to Joseph and Neema. “That makes sense,” she nodded and then asked, “What would you like to know about me?” She didn’t mind talking about herself. It was just that she preferred knowing what the person, or in this case persons, were interested in. Otherwise she always tended to wonder whether or not she was boring them.

Joseph shrugged and Neema laughed “Well let’s start with hobbies and see where we go from there” Her laugh had a musical quality to it that went well with her melodious voice.

Joseph and Neema

“That’s an easy one to answer,” Kaili laughed in return. “I enjoy doing a lot of different arts and crafts and I also love doing much more … exciting and adrenaline inducing activities like diving, cave diving in particular, and cross country running. Things like that. In my job I spend a lot of time sitting, thinking and talking, so in my spare time I often like to do things that are physical in some form.” She gave a small shrug and then asked, “How about you? What hobbies do you two have?”

~Dr. Luana Iolani Kaili

Joseph opened his mouth to answer but Neema was first “He’s a hoarder” She said with a sly grin on her face “He’s turned an entire wing of our house into a museum of sorts” The large man frowned at his wife “I don’t hoard, I occasionally collect things and I also keep things I’ve been given in a place where they can be viewed that’s all. As for a hobby I enjoy exercise, martial arts or dancing. Neema likes to spend her time in our library, we have a decent collection of written works” Neema cut in “Nothing like sitting behind a real fireplace holding an actual book, not replicated but made by hand, even machine made is better.”

Joseph and Neema

Kaili laughed softly and good-naturedly at their banter. Watching and listening to the two of them filled her with happiness. It was obvious that they loved each other very much and that was something that always filled her with happiness. “What are you collecting?” she asked Joseph and then added right away, “What kind of books do you like to read? Any specific genre or author or something?” Of course she had some mementos as well, but not many and it always fascinated her to see what people collected. Not to mention that she was generally able to gleam quite a bit about another person just by seeing their space.

Joseph gave his wife a rueful smile before turning back to Kaili “I used to collect battle trophies when I was a Marine, Klingon swords or daggers, -Romulan Disruptors, Cardassian helmets, that sort of things, weapons from almost every enemy that has made hostile intentions towards the Federation in the past fifty or so years, I also keep gifts given to me by friends, dignitaries or the like. For instance, I have a book of Law gifted to me by the Xahean Councilor of Law perhaps fifteen years ago” It was one of the few times he’d spent any time with Xaheans at large. Neema picked up “I enjoy biographies mostly, the Federation is filled to the Brim with interesting people but our library has books on history, art, novels of any kind from mystery, to horror, to romance”

Joseph and Neema

At the mention of collecting battle trophies, Kaili felt a bit of unease stir up inside her. Of course she knew that he wasn’t the only one to collect those things. On the contrary. And she knew that it was because of people like him that people like her never had to fight and are able to live a safe life. And that was something she was very grateful for. But she would be lying if she said she didn’t feel some unease in the presence of weapons. So she silently acknowledged all the feelings this part of the conversation had stirred up and let them pass. “That sounds like an impressive collection and an equally impressive library,” she replied with a soft smile.

“Well you are welcome to visit any time” Joseph said quickly “There are few things more relaxing than a book under a hearth with some soft piano in the background” He pointedly did not mention his collection as if he’d picked up something in her features, the trained mind of a detective at work “We also have an excellent dining room we rarely have a chance to use, hopefully we’ll be able to use it and more of the mansion later, our children and grandchildren are coming to visit soon”

Joseph and Neema

“Thank you! I’d like that,” Kaili replied sincerely, her body language relaxing again. “And I’m really happy for you that your children and grandchildren are coming to visit! How many children and grandchildren so you have and how old are they?” she asked curiously, her gaze wandering between Joseph and Neema.
