Karilan kissed her back but smiled the entire time. Finally pulling away, they said “Come… sit with me, love.” and the turned and picked up two plates and walked over to the dining table. Morning traffic was picking up, and shuttles and air-cars moved past the high tower in increasing numbers. Karilan said “I wonder how many wrecks we could cause if we shut off the privacy filter?” and then laughed. They set the plates down and on each was an egg omelet with chives and cheese, cold smoked fish, and two slices of french toast with orange marmalade. They pulled out a chair for Kaili and then sat opposite her. They picked up their fork, but paused and smiled at her. Reaching across the table they took her hand and said softly “I love you, Kaili.” and then gave her hand a gentle squeeze and then let go.
“Probably a lot,” Kaili laughed softly as she sat down on the chair Karilan had pulled out for her. “Though I’d rather not find out. I am responsible for the health of everyone on the colony and I think it’d look rather bad if the new Director of Medical and Social Services caused some massive traffic accidents, don’t you think?”
Giving Karilan’s hand a squeeze in return, Kaili whispered, “I love you too, Karilan.”
“I hope it’s edible. It’s been some time since I cooked for anyone.” they said as they began to cut into the omelet.
Karilan
“I’m sure it’s perfect. If it tastes nearly as good as it smells it has to be!” Kaili replied with a loving smile. “Thank you for making breakfast for me, my love,” she added and then lifted one of the French toast and took a bite. Closing her eyes, she chewed slowly and took her time to savour the taste. It wasn’t till she opened her eyes again that she said, “This really is as good as it smells and looks!”

“Then it’s just like you, then…” and they smiled at her and took a bite, nodding in agreement. “Ok, I am pleased with it.” they ate a few more bites before setting the fork aside and saying “Stars above I forgot the drinks!” and they stood up and almost bounced into the kitchen, giving parts of their anatomy some extra shake.
Her cheeks pink and with a smile that somehow was both mischievous and sheepish at the same time, Kaili watched Karilan disappear into the kitchen.
They came back carrying two glasses. “Fadelrian orange and hibiscus. I drink this every morning, actually.” and they set a glass near Kaili and then sat back down. They took a sip, then a bite, and then looked at her with a thoughtful expression before swallowing the bite and saying “Are we crazy? I mean… you would know better than I. I do not believe we are… but do you?”

Kaili shook her head and replied without hesitation and with conviction, “I don’t think we are crazy. Impulsive and love-sick maybe. But not crazy. Though if we had gotten married last night, then yeah I’d call that crazy, though not the two of us.” Reaching for their hand, she continued, “We only live once. At least as far as we know. And it’s not like we are children and don’t understand the possible consequences of our behaviour.”
Still holding their hand, Kaili rose to her feet and carefully moved around the table to she was standing right next to Karilan. Taking their other hand as well, she pulled them to their feet and kissed them tenderly. “No matter what is going to happen, I’m sure I won’t regret any of this, Karilan,” she whispered as she broke their kiss and let go of their hands. Only to wrap her arms around them.
