The flight took longer than expected. Hours upon hours passed. At some point the flight officer came back. He instructed Nicholas to ditch any Starfleet gear he was carrying and place it in a special container. He followed instructions. No reason not to. The flight carried on.

They landed at a small facility and Nicholas was taken inside. It was a sparsely populated place. He was taken to a small surgical room. There he waited. And waited. It was very sterile in this room, a comfort medically, but not so much personally. He thought the room might be soundproofed. He couldn’t hear anything outside.

A doctor came in. She was tall and thin. She nodded to Nicholas by way of greeting. “Mr James. I trust you were informed by Governor Hyrushi as to the nature of our clinic?”
“Yes. Discreet operations, all that.”
“Then welcome. We were told you needed a cyberneticist. Tell me what exactly is wrong, and I’ll prepare an operation for you.”
“I am a section 31 operative, part of an experiment-“
“I’ve dealt with more than one of you. Do you want them removed or replaced?”
“Replaced.”
“Very well. Let’s get to work.”

An extensive operation was prepared. The schedule was one month, during which time Nicholas would just be missing. Only Kenzo and a shuttle pilot knew where he had gone.

Every day was terrible. Awful. Horrible. The surgeries were just as bad as he remembered them from years ago. Day after day they made slow but steady progress. The doctor was careful not to rush things so as not to push Nicholas too far. Every few days, they took a day or two off. To let him recover a bit before diving back in.

A month passed slowly. One might say painfully.

“You’re done Mr James.”
“That’s it?”
“If you’d like more done, that can be arranged. But for what you originally requested… you’re done.”
“Thank you.”

Time to head home.

From the OED Starport he sent Kenzo a message. I have returned. I’m back in business.

-Nicholas James

A message appeared almost immediately on his PaDD. Come to my office first thing. Much to discuss. I understand you are feeling much better. Congratulations.

Hyrushi, Gov.

Nicholas headed that way. He didn’t know if he felt different, but he looked the part. He wore a black suit, with a white shirt, and a black tie, no sign of Starfleet on his person. He walked down the streets, appreciating the views with quite literally new eyes. The place was much the same, for the moment.

He entered the Governor’s office, pausing at the reception desk. “Oh. Hello. I see the Governor has cleared some time for you. Go right in.” Nicholas nodded and went through. To most, he would have looked like himself, just out of uniform. Someone more familiar would recognize just how tired he looked.

“Good afternoon Governor. You wanted a word?”

-Nicholas James

Hyrushi sat at his desk and looked up as the doors opened. He stood and extended a hand as James mounted the two low steps up to the desk area and smiled. “Welcome back, Mr. James. How are you feeling? Other than tired. Please, sit. Would you like something to drink or eat?”

Hyrushi, Gov.

“A coffee, please. Caffeine is required for continued operation.” Nicholas sat down. “The whole thing went well. I believe the old components were incinerated, so until the old bosses track me down the hard way, we should be free and clear. Being a civilian does feel strange though. I’ve been in the service my entire adult life. How’ve things been here?”

-Nicholas James

Hyrushi tapped a button on the desk interface and then looked at James. “And even if they do, they will have certain… layers… they will have to deal with before they get to you. And, if everything goes as planned, you will know they are here long before they reach you. And to that end… how do you feel about getting to work Mr. James? Because I have a Colonial Intelligence Agency that needs both a Director and to be built from the ground up. Think you a ready to take on that task?” Hyrushi looked at the man, and let James’s emotions flicker through his own mind.

Hyrushi, Governor

It didn’t require much consideration. His own talents under more ethical direction, that was the plan. “I’ve been out of work for minutes Governor.” Nicholas paused. “what took you so long?” He leaned back in his chair. “Is it just me, or do we have anyone else working on this?”

-Nicholas James

Hyrushi smiled and slid a PaDD across the desk to him. “Just you… for now. I am giving you a great deal of leeway in how you design things. And I am giving you a great deal of trust. To that end, some of my personal associates have identified two candidates you might want to meet with… or not, your choice. One is a former Intel asset like yourself. I understand she left under somewhat inauspicious circumstances. The other… well… as I’m sure you can tell from their file… the other is Breen. Also formerly in the employ of Fleet Intelligence… also harboring no fondness to that particular organization from what we can tell. They are both here on Oed right now. I will leave the rest up to you as far as personnel goes. But I do have you a site to work from. It’s a privately held warehouse. Operational and with a good deal of traffic in and out at all hours. Foodstuffs and construction materials mostly, coming in and going to the orbital stations. It has been recently purchased by an off-world conglomerate based on Betazed. How you utilize and incorporate it is up to you. The only thing I have had added is a crypto-locked comms array so we can discuss without too much concern of eavesdropping. Your preliminary operational funding comes from the company accounts. Once you are set up, we will bring in the legislative oversight as you and I see fit. Questions?”

Hyrushi, Gov.

Nicholas gave the contents of the PaDD a once over. “This should be just fine. I’ll look into both candidates, we’ll need what help we can get. Though I suppose the lack of immediate legislative oversight will mean a fun time with them later. Problems for down the line.”

-Nicholas James

Hyrushi shrugged slightly and said “You keep your house in order and working for the good of the colony, I’m sure we will have little problem dealing with anyone wishing to throw a fit. And until we reach that point, I am responsible for you and your group. If anything should go sideways, it will be dealing with the fallout. So… other than what you have, what else will you need, Director?”

Hyrushi, Gov.

“Let’s see…” Nicholas did a quick inventory. “staff, equipment, and a place to keep them…” he nodded. “That mostly covers it. I’ll need someone to break into my old offices and quarters. Obtain some things. Don’t want to be seen too near those places.”

-Nicholas James

Hyrushi smiled slightly. “Perhaps an audition is order, then. A small task like that would prove at least a minimum competency level, would you not agree? I would caution you on approaching their current residence. It is heavily trapped. Perhaps best to be cognizant of such before just ‘showing up’.”

Hyrushi, Gov.

Nicholas nodded. “Yes, I’m sure taking a Breen mercenary by surprise is the wisest course of action.” He shot Kenzo a look. “They’ll be heavily armed as well, I assume. So what did you have in mind for their ‘audition?’”

-Director Nicholas James

“You need things from your old quarters… they will want to know something about the man they will work for. What better audition then to let them retrieve what you need… and perhaps get a look at some of your more… ‘personal’… items. I’m sure they can infer from that what they would need to know. The rest you can supply as you see fit.” Hyrushi said flatly.

Hyrushi, Gov.

“That’ll be a good start.” Nicholas agreed. “You’ve met them both? Other than they should be hired, what do you think?”

-Nicholas James

“I’ve met the Breen. The other is… shy. And I am not saying they should be hired. I am providing you candidates. It is solely up to you who your agents are.” Hyrushi said.

Hyrushi, Governor
