“Hopefully it won’t be that long till you’ll be able to see her again,” Kaili replied with a soft smile. For a few moments she looked at the two of them in silence and then asked, “How do you feel about her being a fighter pilot?” She didn’t mean to pry. Yet this was one of those moments when her training took over and she slipped into therapy mode without meaning to. And she had a feeling that there were a lot of mixed, maybe even contradicting emotions at play for both of them.

Joseph cocked his head in mild confusion but Neema seemed to catch on and spoke first “Pride mostly, our children have never been far from danger and we prepared them for life out there best we could” Joseph looked at his wife and nodded “Quite, she was a natural pilot and it was what she wanted to do. We worry of course but I’ve always held the belief that we make the best we can of our children and allow them their own paths, A doctor, a Lawyer, a Fighter Pilot, and a Starfleet officer. All jobs have risks of a different kind. Besides there hasn’t been a major conflict of note since the Dominion War, Starfleet Engineering and a great pilot make short work of a run-of-the-mill pirate and Lia is beyond great.” Joseph finished with a pride-filled grin.

Kaili smiled softly and nodded, “That is a wonderful approach. My parents raised us very similarly and as a daughter I can say: I’m very grateful to know they let us choose our own path and to know that, no matter what, they’ll always be there for my siblings and me. I hazard a guess your children feel the same way.” With the tender smile still playing across her face, her gaze became unfocused as she began to wander down memory lane without meaning to.

Both Joseph and Neema nodded then Joseph spoke “Have you ever considered having Children?” He asked curiously

Kaili nodded and smiled sightly. “I have and with the right person at my side I think I’d like to have children. If they want as well, that is. And if not that’s okay as well,” She replied thoughtfully.

Joseph nodded “Indeed that is the more important thought, to have someone and that someone being the right someone” Neema laughed at that “Like your big brother. Disappearing for two years then reappearing with a daughter no mention of a mother” He snorted at that “My brother’s bad habits notwithstanding I do hope you find someone, it’s a big galaxy but with someone, it’s not as empty”

Kaili chuckled softly and then said a little more seriously, “That’s true and who knows: Maybe that someone is here on this colony. And if not, that’s okay as well. While I would like to share my life with someone, I never felt the need to absolutely have someone in my life no matter what. To be with someone, whether or not we’re a good fit just so that I’m not single.” She gave a small shrug and as nonchalant as she appeared: there was a small flicker of something like longing on her face nevertheless.

Joseph and Neema shared a look “Well I don’t have much advice when it comes to matters of the heart. I found my wife by getting shot and I don’t recommend that.” Joseph chuckled “Doubt you’ll want to spend too much time with another doctor, I’ve seen my fair share of Hospital romances” He yelped at a sudden heel hitting his foot and he turned to glare at his wife. Neema looked very innocent “Finding someone special is hard that is true but sometimes it’s enough just to find someone.”

The passerby in OED V saw a lavish vehicle passing by with what seemed to be a VIP.

Passerby’s Eyes

Kaili nodded thoughtfully and was silent for a few moments. “That’s true and it also feels a little like settling. And I don’t want that. Nor do I think it would be fair towards the other person, don’t you thing?” she mused, her head tilted slightly to the left while blinking a few times with her inner and outer eyelids.

Joseph looked at the passing vehicle as he spoke “You’re not wrong on that but sometimes what you build with someone over the years becomes more than settling. But then of course I think the best judge of that is you.” He shot his wife an amused look “Worst comes to worst and Neema will find someone. She likes to play matchmaker with my extended family” His wife sniffed at that “It would work better if your family wasn’t as bullheaded stubborn as you” She gave Luana an exasperated look “Four cousins he had a hand in raising, unfortunately. Only one of them showed any promise in settling down. Introduced him to a lovely Merchant and they ended up getting married and have a lovely young girl together” Joseph shook his head “He put too much focus in his job, they split a few years back. Starfleet can be difficult on relationships”

Joseph and Neema

“Not only Starfleet can be difficult on relationships. Any career can be. And some of us just aren’t good at staying in one place for any extended period of time,” Kaili mused, tracing patterns across the surface of the table with her right index finger.

Joseph nodded “That is true, one must cultivate a relationship carefully, especially when working difficult jobs. We were fortunate enough that we got work on Earth, a good place to raise a family.”
