She watched as the young human woman stepped down. It was quite surprising to find her to be human and incredibly young. “I am impressed by your ship and its crew. There are aspects I did not expect, not the least of which is your crew diversity. I confess I do not know much about creating a cohesive crew but I …” She stammered a little, her hand coming to her chest in shock. “I am at a loss. How old is she?”

Urg grinned. “Commander Shiv, Chief Justice Astrid Rousseau. I don’t know her real name or age… neither does she; but medical scans put her at sixteen or seventeen. She is an abandoned soul, left to starve in the streets of the Orion’s capital city. I… ‘met’… her when she tried to kill one of my guards while on the way to a meeting with some Syndicate filth.” and he chuckled. “‘Death by Klingon’, she called it. Well, that amount of courage couldn’t go unrewarded, now could it? So… I took her in. She has been with me ever since. Fine fighter, shrewd. And takes to ship operations like breathing.” and he looked directly at Astrid. “I plan on sending her to Academy. She would make a fine officer. Once we get her past her tendency to answer insults with a knife’ point. Hence the name.” and he winked.

Astrid turned to the woman quickly. “I do not mean to diminish you or your skills in any way… I have just never seen someone as young as you in a Captain’s chair and I do not understand. It is my ignorance, not your failing in any way.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Shiv shrugged and said “Nothing I’m not used to, Justice. No offense taken.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Astrid nodded. “I imagine so. Well, answering insults by knife is a bit frowned upon in Star Fleet, out here it is a rather admirable trait. Though I would request that you not actually assault someone as that might end up on my bench and I would hate to deal with it.” She gave the woman a grin and then turned to her host. “I find my estimation of you rising every moment Lord Duroc. Your unconventional style is impressive.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Urg chuckled and said “My ‘style’ is to put the best people in the best roles for them to succeed. That’s it. If that is unconventional, maybe the galaxy needs a bit more of that. Right Shiv?” Shiv shook her head and then looked at Astrid. “Don’t let him fool you, Ma’am. He’d throw a toddler on the Tactical station if he had to.” Urg shrugged and then smiled down at Astrid. “She’s not wrong, but it’s never too early to learn, is it?” and he laughed.

Urg, Son of the Builder

Astrid laughed. “I think yes. That might be a bit too early.” She liked the way he thought. Unconventional certainly had its advantages. Sometimes she chose unconventional punishments for crimes based on the fact that conventional tools were not always successful as a deterrent. She could see the need for something different and when it worked, it worked well. Duroc seemed to have a system here that worked and she wondered if he would be able to do so well on OED V. The Klingon had plans in mind no doubt.

bump

Urg motioned her to follow and they walked down a passage. “My approach on my ship ruffles feathers back on Q’onoS. They hate that I have non-Klingons ordering Warriors. But what they cannot rail against is the success we have. Forty-seven engagements… usually outnumbered… and I have a less than five percent casualty rate and damage is half of of other vessels. My crew… my House… is not to be trifled with. Everyone you see with a Duroc medallion, including your Police Commissioner, is a fully recognized member of House Duroc. We are unique amongst the nobel houses in that half of our House isn’t Klingon. Well… not in body. In spirit is another matter entirely.” They approached a door that slid open silently.

On the other side was a large gymnasium-type room. Various kinds of exercise and sparring equipment could be seen around a large central area that was clear of anything save some kind of mats on the floor. The room was dimly lit, but the mats showed dark stains here and there. Standing in the center of the room were three figures: a Human of Nordic decent, apparent from their long blond beard and tall, well-muscled form. A Romulan woman dressed in loose fitting but somewhat formal robes. And finally a Klingon woman with her very well muscled arms crossed on her chest. Urg led Astrid to them and said “Chief Justice. Meet Sven Harmussen, formerly of the Federation Marines. Dri’hul, recently resigned from the Romulan Security Force. And finally K’letn, my personal guard and mate.” As he introduced each, they nodded and met Astrid’s eyes with their own. “I have discussed what occurred in your home; and the three assembled here have volunteered to teach you a combination of styles that will help you ensure that, should someone be so foolish as to try to harm you again, my Brother Karlson will have no issue finding who it. Their injuries will ensure they are easily recognized. Now, I know in your role as Chief Justice you would prefer to defend and not… end… such an attack. But such knowledge is useful. It is better to know and not need… than need and not know.”

Urg, Son of the Builder

The doors opened to the large exercise and sparring room. It was definitely in the aesthetic she had come to know as distinctly Klingon. Her eyes traveled over the space and took in each of the three rather larger persons present. Astrid was only 5 foot 7 and willowy compared to many people, especially those in the room. She put her hands on her waist and regarded each person with a nod. “It is an honor to meet each of you and I thank you for the gift of your time and knowledge.”

She turned to look at Urg. “I’ll state the obvious. I am much smaller than anyone here. I have been working out for the last two years so I am stronger than I look, but how does someone like me defeat someone of their stature?” She asked with a gesture in their direction.

Rousseau, HotJ

(Apologies for the late reply, I have been super sick and in and out of the hospital)

(No apologies needed. Do what you can to take care of you, okay? We are here as you can.)

Urg smiled a not-so-pleasant smile and said “Ah, I was wondering if that question would be asked.” and he chuckled and looked at Sven; a tall, broad shouldered figure with a broad chest. Sven smiled and inclined his head at Astrid and said with a small chuckle “Most fighting instructors you will work with have a framework of guidelines and regulations they abide by. We don’t have such restrictions, Ma’am.” The Klingon K’Letn laughed and said “That’s an understatement!!” and laughed louder. The Romulan gave Astrid a small smile and said “To be blunt, Chief Justice… we are going to teach you how to fight dirty. Use the environment to improvise weaponry. In short… cheat. Stepping into a fighting arena there are protocols and traditions. There is a notion of a ‘fair’ fight. Stepping into this ring there is only winning. So when you leave us, even if you are only here today, you will have an edge that is wholly unpredictable.”

Their smiles were infectious and she could not help but grin in response. Their answers made sense but could she cheat? She had lived her life for fair and equal. This training would certainly give her an edge though and she had to acknowledge the usefulness.

Urg smiled and looked down at Astrid. “What these three will teach you may give you pause… don’t let it. We are not saying that you should fight everyone in this fashion. But if they come into your home? Wishing to do you harm? Then they broke the rules… so the rules no longer apply. Now… lets get started, shall we?” He looked at the three and said “Don’t injure her. But make sure she learns.” The three banged their fists on the their chests and nodded once, and then Sven beckoned the Judge onto the mat.

Urg, Lord Duroc

His words made her trepidation fade. She was aware of how Klingons viewed life and fighting. There was logic here she could understand and use. Nodding at his wisdom, she turned to the mat to join Sven. She had a very strong impression she was going to be more sore tomorrow than she had ever been in her life. She rolled her shoulder and came to about 5 feet from Sven, taking a stance that was neither aggressive nor passive. She didn’t know what form of teaching his instruction would take. “Alright. Let’s begin.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Sven smiled and said “Very well. Now first and foremost is to learn balance. Balance is the key to everything. As long as you keep your balance and take that from your opponent, then you have the upper hand.” He rolled his shoulders and licked his lips, and his eyes took on a gleam that seemed particularly wild. he started to circle Astrid, slapping his arms, grunting, growling, and shaking his head. He looked as if he was stalking her like she was prey.

She watched him, fascinated by the display. Was he trying to distract her? She kept her eyes on his hands and feet. She never let him get behind her, moving and adjusting to his circling.

K’Letn barked at Astrid “Don’t let it throw you! Concentrate! Don’t think! Just watch. React, don’t anticip-” and her commands were cut off as Sven stopped what he was doing and stood up straight, looking past Astrid at Urg. “My Lord?” he asked with a questioning glance.

Sven

Had Astrid not been listening to K’Letn’s instructions, she might have also stopped paying attention to Sven. She might have stopped and turned to look at Urg, but she didn’t. Besides, Joseph Karlson had already tried to trap her in this manner before. He had been successful, several times she would be ashamed to admit, but she had learned. If Urg wished to stop the proceedings, he would have said something so that she could hear with her back turned to him as it was. Astrid may not be a physical fighter by nature, but she was smart.

Fight dirty She thought as Sven’s attention became focused (however lightly for the trap she assumed) on Urg. She took advantage of this and quickly dropped low to sweep a kick at Sven’s feet.

Rousseau, HotJ

As she dropped and swung her leg, her foot connecting solidly on Sven’s calf and sending him off balance, her momentum was stopped as her hair was grabbed from behind and Urg yanked her back hard, but just enough to hurt and not to cause pain. He let go almost immediately and looked at her. “First thing… know where everyone is at all times. When we teach… we all teach. Pay close attention to your surroundings. Keep your back clear of anyone as much as you can. And for all that is holy keep moving.” and he nodded encouragingly. “Now go. Show them what you have. Make them earn your respect.” and he put a hand on her shoulder and pushed her slightly back towards Sven.

Urg

Any enjoyment for a successful strike was so short lived as to be non-existent. Astrid yelped in shock as her hair was pulled and she was yanked back. Small amounts of hair being pulled could hurt acutely, but pulling the whole of one’s hair had a more blunt effect to pain. It hurt but not sharply. She turned quickly when her hair was released and looked at Urg wondering what just happened.

At his words, her mind worked furiously, wondering how she was going to keep those present all in her sights given their positions and the order to keep moving. Astrid adjusted herself, keeping the others on her periphery at the every least, if they were not in her full view. It made concentrating on Sven much more difficult. How Sven recovered from her sweep might help her to assess him as an opponent.

Rousseau, HotJ

Sven nodded in approval as she moved and he hopped back a few steps. “Good… good… you don’t have to see everyone… just be in a position to see if they move. And use all your senses… hearing, especially. Your ears convey more information than you know.”

It seemed as if it was predetermined what happened next… and maybe it was. There was the sound of shuffling coming from Astrid’s rear and to her left. Simultaneously, Sven laughed loudly and began to charge in, drawing back his right arm with his hand balled up into a fist and his eyes flashing wildly.

Urg and Company

One does not want to get punched in the face, but being tackled or whatever might be coming from her left didn’t sound like a fun time either. Sienna had done a lot of defensive work with the Police Commissioner and his wife. She knew this was a more aggressive training and that she was likely to come away with quite a bit of pain, but how to handle two threats at once?

At the last moment, she stepped into Sven’s charge and to her right. She turned counterclockwise and grabbed the arm that passed her face and used her hips to bump his natural momentum towards whatever opponent was coming in from the left.

Rousseau, HotJ

The redirection of Sven’s momentum had the desired effect the man was placed squarely in the direction of K’Letn running at her from behind. The two collided, but not before a large Klingon hand grabbed Astrid’s shoulder and the trio went down in a confused pile.

KICK. BITE. TEAR. SMASH THEM WITH YOUR HEAD. USE EVERYTHING TO GET AWAY.” Urg’s voice yelled over the grunts and heavy breaths of her ‘assailants.”DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET FREE. THEY ARE THE ENEMY. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FAIR FIGHT.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Astrid went down and got tangled in the limbs of the three. She was lithe but unprepared for grappling on this level. Everything Urg shouted to her to do went against her calmer nature. She had to draw on something else, something she hid deep. There was a time in her life where she knew to her soul there was no such thing as a fair fight. Long had she extricated herself from that danger, but she pulled on those instincts now… put herself back in that sphere of danger and pain.

There was an instant change in her fighting style. Her elbows came down hard. Her knees thrust at any soft tissue she could reach. Her fingernails, perfect ovals of sharp edges, slashed at anything resembling skin. She grimaced hard and yelled as she kicked, before finally feeling an opening and rolling away panting heavily. Her eyes roved wildly, looking for the next threat.

Rousseau, HotJ

PAUSE!” Urg barked and the instructors froze. Sven was panting and was holding his side, a large smile on his face. K’Letn’s cheek was already swelling, and she regarded the Chief Justice with predatory eyes. Urg stepped into Astrid’s line of sight. “That. That right there. That feeling of the warriors inside you. That is where your strength lies. It may come from hate… fear… pain… it doesn’t matter. That is the part of your soul that you fight with, Justice. I don’t mean spar. That is not a feeling for fall-mats and technical joint locks. That, my friend… that is for when you must win. Do you understand? That feeling is the one weapon you can always draw. No one can take it. And that is where you train from here.”

He stepped away, and then crossed his arms on his chest. “K’Letn. Sven. Did you see it?” K’Letn nodded and snorted, looking like a bull about to charge. Sven slowly stood and said “Ja, Lord Duroc. This one has fire.” He looked at Astrid and said “My Lord is correct, that is where you fight from. But that is also a dark place, and that fire in your belly can quickly consume you if you aren’t careful. You have to be able and turn it on and off, like a switch. Now… take a breath. Let it go. And then.. we go again. And you find it again, yes?”
