A woman wove her way through the lobby and arrived at the reception desk panting. “I’m Kristina Cosgrove. It was reported that my sister has been admitted?!”

The receptionist nodded. “She’s been taken to surgery and we’re waiting for an update.”

“We?” she asked.

Conrad had somehow noticed Kristina coming in, but not outright due to familiarity. Yes, she was attractive, and he being the man he was, could not help appreciate it.

The receptionist pointed to the waiting area. “They brought her in…”

When she turned to face him however, his face changed from enjoyment to surprise. This time he did indeed recognize her. Oh, yes. Of course she was here.

Kristina turned and her mouth dropped open. Gathering herself, she moved over swiftly. “Captain Conrad. What the hell is going on? How did Halai end up with you? She never told me she was coming here.”

Conrad put on his best ‘don’t worry everything is ok’ face. “To be honest, Kristina, she didn’t tell me either. I’m not totally convinced that’s even your sister in there.” he said a little quieter now, hoping to not gain too much attention from others.

“What do you mean?” Kristina said, her brow furrowing.

He gestured to a seat next to him. “There are no tatoos on her face at all. But…she’s registering in all the instruments as Halai. But that’s not the strangest thing. She and Akem suddenly burst through an old science lab on a station barely used for much anymore. It’s a sketchy place. Definitely not somewhere I would expect your sister to be at.”

Her body felt heavy as she sat, her frown deepening. “Akem is with her too?” She shook her head. “None of that makes any sense. I talked to her last week. She’s on Tyrellia, though she’s supposed to be leaving in a few days for a conference on Betazed. And Halai would never get rid of or cover up those tattoos. They are a symbol of everything she is, a part of her as the air she breathes.”

“I’d say some sort of twin we never knew about but that doesn’t explain Akem.” Kristina’s mind was whirling with possibilities and so far none of them made sense. Her fingers tapped on her thigh as the worry set in. What if it was Halai? Would she lose her sister this time? Fighting back tears her head dropped as she tried to take steady breaths.

Michael noticed her worry. He wasn’t a typically sensitive person, but he could understand at this point. He put an arm around her gently, simply being there as they waited for word from the receptionist.

The arm surprised her, but the weight made Kristina exhale, sigh. She sank a little in her chair and let her head fall into the crook of his arm. They didn’t know each other all that well, but when you travel with people, even just a week, you get to know something about them. Halai had trusted Conrad to help her stage a rescue for her abducted sister, and Akem and Halai had formed some sort of bond. When Kristina then returned to Oed with them, she had already been a changed person. Not the petulant child she had been living with Halai, blaming everyone else for the wrongs in her life and never appreciating how privileged a life she had led. No, in the span of a few short weeks a few years ago, Kristina grew up.

An hour passed and Kristina was bored as hell waiting but had barely moved from the chair. The anxiousness had been quelled into a small seed for the time being, but that changed as the receptionist approached. She sat upright more and pushed herself to her feet. “Well?”

“She’s out of surgery and they’ve taken her to the ICU. Third Floor, Room 317. You can visit for a little while, but don’t be surprised if they don’t let you stay too long. Visiting hours will be up in an hour.”

“Thank you!” Kristina said before turning to Michael. “Come on, let’s go find out what the hell is going on.”

Conrad stood up with her. He watched for a brief moment as she moved to the lift. Definitely a good kind of different. he thought to himself as he stepped forward behind her. Kanok also was close behind as they went to see just who it was exactly that Conrad had brought to Oed.
