Akem started sitting up. “My name is Akem. An update on her progress would be great whenever that happens.” he said groggily. He knew they wanted him to take it easy, but he was simply ready to move. He had lived his whole life that way, and now was no different.

The doctor let him sit up and watched his motions carefully. “Can you tell us what happened? Your… companion was very lucky to have found stasis so quickly. Another couple minutes and she would have died.” It was clear Rakis was looking for answers.

Akem sighed and brought a hand to his head, massaging his temple as though he were trying to remember. He knew the game. The only reason anyone asked questions was to find something to use against you. He simply wasn’t going to have it. These people were actually helping him though, which was completely throwing him off.

“I’m not entirely sure. Details are still pretty fuzzy. Feels like luck that he was even there to be honest.” Akem was still deciding whether he could trust these people. Legitimate medical facilities were a rare thing, and this place seemed very well taken care of. Where the hell was he?

Rakis sighed. “At this point, I’m tempted to agree with you. Well, sit tight. We have no need to keep you and can discharge you, but your friend will be out of surgery soon. We can take you up to her once she’s in the ICU. They’ll keep her there for a little while to make sure she pulls through.”

Akem simply nodded as he kept his mind open to Lai in case she woke.

An hour later, Rakis returned. “She’s out of surgery. The ICU staff can give you an update, but Nurse Halfeo will take you up there.” At this point, he was no longer her patient and she knew she wouldn’t get more out of him. It would be up to others to investigate if necessary, but with the wounds the woman had and the two being put into stasis, she couldn’t see the matter just being dropped.

A petite nurse smiled at Akem, her gaze lingering on him for a moment longer than was probably comfortable before she led up up a couple floors.

Akem was, at this point, used to getting looks. He knew why, but that didn’t mean people didn’t have ulterior motives…good or bad. He gave her a smile back as she led him.

In ICU room 317, Lai laid in the bed hooked up to an infusion unit that was delivering more blood and fluids. The monitor above her head showed her vitals as being within at least a normal range, though her usual olive skin looked pale though, even with the blood transfusion.

It wasn’t long before someone else arrived. “Akem? I’m Doctor Kedvis, I’ll be handling her care now, though the surgeon will be up to check on her soon. They were able to remove the projectile and repair the damage but she lost a lot of blood and she had a mild seizure. Even with the transfusion her body is weak, and there was strain on her organs, including her heart.” Kedvis gazed at Akem and exhaled. “We won’t know more until she wakes up and we can test her neurological state. But we’re hopeful.”

Akem quietly nodded understanding and concerned for her. He moved closer to her and put a hand gently on her cheek. It was the closest contact he had with her since the station incident. He allowed his touch to permeate her mind with his presence. If he could help heal her, he would.

Kedvis watched as the man made contact with Cosgrove and his eyes widened as he watched the readings on the monitor shift. The surgical team had made notes of an energy field the woman emanated but hadn’t seen any sign of it. But here, now, it returned the moment Akem touched her. Interesting.

Lai was there, hovering under the surface. Like holding your breath and floating just under water, gazing up and feeling the sun upon your face. Deep in her unconsciousness, she touched the familiar feeling from a being she knew better than anyone. A touch, a caress. She was here. Patience…

Akem softly smiled. I know…I’ll be here.

Kristina couldn’t help but hurry, but she tried to refrain from running. “Room 317. 313, 315. here it is!”

Michael Conrad moved as fast as her, just to keep up with her. This was after all, or at least the presumed it was, her sister. The intensity of it made sense.

She stood at the entrance where a doctor stood near the bed and there was Akem, much like she remembered him. “Akem?” Kristina said, stepping in. Her eyes drifted to the figure in the bed and sure it enough it looked exactly like her sister, but without the tattoos. Halai had had them since before she attended Starfleet Academy. It was strange to see her without them. She hadn’t even asked about the back one yet. “I’m having a hard time understanding this. How are you both here? What did she do to her tattoos? They said she had been shot?!”

Conrad and Kanok appeared right behind her. As soon as the questions flew, Conrad’s eyes shot up. He wasn’t sure shooting from the hip was going to be wise.

The doctor smiled reassuringly. “The surgical team removed the projectile and repaired the damage. We’ll know more about Miss Cosgrove’s condition when she wakes up, but it might be a little bit before the sedatives wear off.”

~Kristina et al.

Akem turned to face everyone, his hand now having moved to Lai’s own hand. Did they Miss Cosgrove? Did they think she was someone else? And he had little in the form of answers for the slew of questions that were hurtled his way. They knew his name, but not hers?

Akem nodded to the doctors. “Thank you for your assistance. I’ll just stay here with her until she wakes.”

He then turned to Kristina and then recognized Conrad and Kanok. He was mildly on edge, but they did end up bringing Lai to these facilities to be healed. They had at least proven themselves to be helpful in that regard. “And what can I do for you three?”
