It was like they were having the same conversation but the words made no sense. None of this did. “My sister used to work on the colony and her mixed-biology required blood proteins added to any blood products or else any transfusion would be rejected. If your… Lai’s DNA is the same, then the blood proteins clearly were needed and worked.” She turned to the doctor full of questions.

Kedvis stepped forward again. “They used the proteins because of the match, yes. A twin perhaps?”

Kristina shook her head. Halai would have known about a twin sister. “My sister’s mother definitely only had one child. We have multiple people still alive who can attest to that.”

She exhaled. “Kitrian. Surlen Kitrian was Halai’s mother. Lai… Halai.” Her hand flew to her mouth. She wanted to say it wasn’t possible, but clearly it was. Moving closer to the woman in the bed who almost looked exactly like her sister. Then she looked at Akem, and then Michael. “You said you found them on some derelict outpost?”

“Eh, derelict…ish?…it’s used, but quite minimally, yes.” replied Michael, not wanting to go into much more detail than that.

Cosgrove shifted her attention back to Akem. “Why were you there?”

Akem was not a fan of the line of questioning and slowly was recoiling from it all. They were given help, yes. But so many people in one room, eyes way too curious about them, asking questions they didn’t need the answers to. It was intimidating. He answered minimally. “We were looking for some place with not so much noise. It’s not fun be hunted.” He took in a deep breath and exhaled slowly, getting his mind under control.

“Hunted?” Kristina said.

Meanwhile, the monitor showed an increase in consciousness and Akem would feel that familiar pulse through him. Lai was waking up, if slowly.

Akem could sense her waking. He kept his eyes however on the various people present within the room. His hand moved to Lai’s own holding it. Being under a microscope was exactly the kind of thing he and Lai had been running from. Both of their abilities were highly sought after. The last thing Akem needed was to be found by yet another person who wanted to learn all they could of them before tearing them apart inside out.

She watched the pair carefully and sighed. Moving over to the far corner of the bed, Kristina sat there, facing Akem. “I’m sorry for being so… aggressive, but you have to understand how this seems from my end. Lai here, aside from the lack of tattoos, looks exactly like my sister, and apparently matches her DNA too. But I talked to my sister last week and she is back home on Tyrellia, where she is the Cultural Ambassador. She lives there with her companion, whom I’ve met several times, a man named Akem. You can understand my confusion, can’t you?”

~Kristina Cosgrove

“And is it possible the name ‘Akem’ is a bit more common than you might think?” The commonalities were just way too strange to Akem. He couldn’t be certain, but it seemed almost as if he and Lai had jumped into a new reality. And he had a sneaking suspicion that with all that had been shared, he was likely not the only one thinking that.

“Perhaps,” Cosgrove conceded, but her expression showed her doubt.

She seemed to question his statement of being hunted earlier. Was this a reality where that simply wasn’t something that happened? “Tell me, what’s the Terran Empire up to these days?” The answer would surely tell him whether he was right or not. Or at least he sincerely hoped it might.

Kristina’s brows rose and she cast her gaze over to Conrad. “Uhh, no Terran Empire here. You’re in the territory of the United Federation of Planets.” She shifted her gaze over to the woman lying in the bed and shook her head. “She really isn’t me sister…” Well wasn’t this day turning out to be something rather unexpected! All she had to do right now was to go home and put in a call to Halai, talk to her herself from where she knew her sister to be still: on Tyrellia. Oh gods, Halai! What was her sister gong to do when she found out there was some alternate version of her here on Oed? Knowing Halai, be endlessly fascinated. The woman was a former scientist after all.

Sounds infiltrated her mind, as well as the sense of people nearby, not just Akem. Worry flooded her mind and Lai tried to hurry her senses up to be in alignment, but they were painfully slow. A murmur escaped her lips as her eyes tried to open.

A sound drew Kristina’s attention and she instinctively reached out a hand, wanting to reassure the woman, even if she wasn’t Halai.

Devoid of that precious sensation that belonged to Akem, Lai’s mind went on high alert. No! Her hand pushed out, pushing against someone else’s as she eyes finally slipped open. With all her will she pushed back against the lifeforce she didn’t recognize, unaware of the details, only that they had to be stopped. She would not go down willing, ever. Fortunately for Kristina though, Lai was still rather weak, so the woman’s efforts effectively pushed her backwards on the bed, as if being repelled. Their hands never touched.

Terrified, her heart rate jumped, the biobed monitor beeping in alarm. Doctor Kedvis moved over swiftly. “Hey, it’s okay, you’re safe here. You just had surgery and need to rest.”

But Lai wasn’t having any of it! Her gaze flew to Akem and she pushed herself upright with nothing short of determination. “I won’t stay here! I won’t be some experiment!”

~Lai Kitrian

Akem brought his eyes squarely in front of her own, one hand on her hand, the other gently to her opposite cheek. “Sshh, I won’t let that happen you know it. The Terran Empire does not exist here. If that’s true, we are…hopefully…safe.” It would be clear to Lai he was thinking straight and entirely focused on her.
