She wanted to believe that so much but they had bene on the run for so long that it felt like too much of a stretch, too much to ask. Hazel eyes ringed with with gold and brimming with tears, Lai focused on Akem. “How do we know it won’t happen here too?” she whispered, drawing at least a little bit of strength from her lover.

A small beep could be heard as Kanok pulled out a datapad out of his leather tunic’s front pocket. There on the display was an alert gone all over Oed about the potential return of Halai Cosgrove and her state of health. He grunted at Conrad and slapped his shoulder before showing him the display.

-Kanok

Conrad looked at the report and his grew wide. The whole of Oed now knew that they were here. Who else was on their way now? The last thing he needed was to be the center of some strange conspiracy or happenstance. He empathized though with Akem and Lai. They didn’t seem to know any more than they did about what was going on, and they were soon going to be at the center of everyone’s attention. Conrad quietly moved forward with a small communicator specifically designed for Black Sparrow personnel. “Here,” he said quietly to Akem, handing over the device. “You can reach me through this if you need to. We’ll be in touch if you need us.”

He then turned to Kanok and nodded before stepping out of the room with him in the hopes of getting out of the hospital before more people showed up and made a scene.

-Michael Conrad, Black Sparrow CO

Lai watched the man step out with wariness but also some relief. There had been far too many people for her liking.

Meanwhile, Kedvis was watching the monitor and nodded. “Your vitals look better, but you need rest,” he said softly.

Rest. It was an unknown word to her. There was no rest. Not for her, not for Akem. But… maybe this place was different. Time would tell. At least Akem seemed convinced it was safe here and she trusted him more than anything.

~Lai Kitrian

Akem accepted the device and watched Kristina go after him. He then turned his attention to Lai. Their rather unique connection allowed for him to project images into her mind. Deltan’s had the ability to communicate with nearly anyone that way. The catch was others from a different species had to learn how to understand it. Lai had done that…and more.

In Lai’s mind, they both appeared together near a shady tree. Both of them with no clothes. They had nothing to hide between them. His fingers caressed her face gently. “Rest” he whispered as gently kissed her forehead.

Eyes closed, a tear slipped over her cheek and for the first time in a very long time, that internal fighter stood down. Such moments were rare and always involved Akem. Before him she had never known a moment’s peace. Oh sure, as a child, before her abilities begun to draw attention, but after that? It had been a near constant stress.

Kristina returned from her conversation with Conrad and watched the couple interact. There was no doubt that this Akem and Lai were together. She had seen that same sort of bond with her sister. It was so strange, but she should be well used to it by now. After all, her life had been rather unusual at times, especially as an adult.

“Is there anything I can do for you two?” she said softly, hoping to present a less threatening presence.

~Kristina Cosgrove

Image still firmly in her mind, Lai opened her eyes to gaze upon Kristina. Akem’s efforts had stilled the panic and thus she was able to assess the other woman more clearly. “You love her… your sister I mean. It’s complicated but there is deep affection for her. I’m sorry I’m not her.” It had been made abundantly clear that they had somehow swapped universes, but what now? What did they do? She didn’t exactly want to go back either, even if they could figure out what happened on that way station.

Lai’s words jolted through Kristina and she couldn’t help but look startled.

Lai shifted her attention back to Lai, her lids drooping. “So tired. I think I’ll sleep now,” she whispered, her mind finally catching up with her body.

~Lai Kitrian

Akem leaned back down in the bed and also within the scene he was projecting to her mind. Rest then, he wordlessly projected to her.

Once Lai had drifted off into rest, Akem turned his eyes to Kristina almost as though he were looking to the heart of her through the windows of her own eyes. “We appreciate your help. I don’t know what sort of attention our being here is bringing, but rest assured we do not want any of it....Nor are we going back in any way, shape, or form. If we have to ‘disappear’ then we will. I’m not sure of what assistance you can provide in that regard?” There was nothing accusatory, only concerned questioning.

Drawing closer, Cosgrove sighed. “Maybe. I know people. What did you mean when you said you were being hunted?” She was knee deep in this already, so it didn’t make sense to back out now.

Akem maintained eye contact with her as he spoke. “Where we are from, our abilities make us prime targets for experimentation. People wanted to replicate what Lai and I are able to do, for their own pleasures of course. She and I had been on the run for many years. Couldn’t trust too many people, and we unfortunately did. I’m sure you can understand why it’s hard for us to trust anyone even now, despite understand the difference in circumstances now.” There was perhaps a bit of him that drew closer to her, not in a necessarily romantic sense, but there was openness…and curiosity.
