Akem grinned as his eyes remained steady on her. “If there is anything I can do to help ease some of the stress, I’m more than happy to oblige. Lai is in a deep sleep now and it’s best if I let her be for a bit. I feel it is partly our fault for the situation being thrust upon you.” His hand never left hers.

He wasn’t wrong, but the warmth of his hand made her feel more open to him. Besides it wasn’t like they had asked to be here. “You couldn’t have known,” Kristina said.

This place felt different to Akem. Hiding himself was no longer, at least not completely, necessary. He allowed his mind to open a bit more, which was evident in his words and perhaps the kinds of words he used. It wasn’t lost on him how charged up they could be when perceived a certain way. Besides, the only way to start new is develop a new network of contacts. And to him at least, their first new ‘friend’ was sitting here with him.

Halai had been one of her first friends on OED V and she had valued that friendship. Halai leaving OED and choosing not to return was a great sadness to her. She couldn’t make the woman return Whatever made her choose to stay on Tyrellia was not something Astrid would gainsay just for friendship. She had been hurt that there had not been further communication but perhaps Halai had not been as close to Astrid, and Astrid had been to her. Either way, she simply had to come to the hospital when she found out Halai had been admitted. What was she doing back on OED V? What had happened to her?

A worried Astrid moved through the hospital looking for her friend. When her eyes lit upon Kristina Cosgrove, she quickened her pace and nearly breathless, blurted, “Halai? Is she alright? What happened?”

Rousseau, HotJ

The noise caused the woman in the bed to stir, but she never woke up. Her dreams had claimed her too fully and though they were vivid, Lai was still in stable condition and her heart rate remained at normal levels.

“Judge Rousseau!” Slipping her hand out of Akem’s, Kristina hurried over, slipping an arm through Astrid’s and pulled her gently into the room, closing the door behind her for privacy. She cursed herself for not thinking of Halai’s old friend, who had likely seen the same news broadcast she had.

“It’s… complicated,” Kristina said, dropping her voice and letting Astrid’s arm go. “That woman there is Halai genetically. But it’s not her. Her and her companion are from a different universe it seems. They are stuck here!” Kristina was overwhelmed by everything but it felt good to have someone else with similar context to herself to share this with. She could trust Astrid, that much she knew. “They arrived in stasis. Captain Conrad encountered them and brought them here because Lai had a fatal injury. They were able to treat it and they used Halai’s blood proteins in storage to give her a blood transfusion. But you know how my sister has unique abilities, a strange form of empathy?”

~Kristina Cosgrove

As soon as Kristina had gotten up, it was as though a bullet train were speeding through the room. So much information being shared with what felt like intense emotion. While Akem would glad calm the both of them down with a touch, he knew it would come across as awkward and perhaps pushy. Nevertheless, he spoke up.

“Greetings Judge Rousseau. While it is certainly appreciated the Lai has visitors, I am wondering if the intensity is really conducive to her healing?” he asked them both with a slight grin, not wanting to insist on any one decision. His hands were folded in front of him, his very symmetrical face never leaving there gaze for a moment. He allowed his empathic senses to ‘hear and understand’ what they felt.

There was a vast sense of relief when she saw Kristina that was short lived due to the whirlwind of motion and information Kristina shared with her. She found herself in the room with what apparently was Halai from a different universe. She had of course studied cases concerning individuals from other universes in her time as an intern with Star Fleet. It was fascinating, the world of possibilities that such universes existing created. Still, she turned her gaze to look at the other form of her friend and sigh for a moment feeling sadness that this poor woman had gone through such trauma. Before she could say anything however, a man she had never met greeted her.

She gazed at him with her dark blue eyes and took a moment to catch up mentally to everything. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She nodded respectfully and quietly spoke. “Do not worry yourself sir. I can keep my voice and emotions low enough so as not to disturb the patient.”

Astrid turned to Kristina. “Of course I am aware of your sister’s abilities. Do they have something to do with what happened to her?”

Rousseau, HotJ

Keeping her voice low, Kristina half nodded. “More like this woman, Lai, has far more developed abilities and they are apparently in high demand where she comes from.” She gestured to the man. “This is her… companion, Akem.” At least that much was the same in this Universe. “They’ve been … hunted. And yes it is what it sounds like. But what I can tell, their entry into this universe was an accident but at this point it’s far safer than where they came from. Even if we knew how to send them back, which at this point we know very little about how it happened, I’m not sure it would be humane.” Speaking to a judge about something that might be about civil liberties certainly had its advantages.

(Bump for Tony)

Akem kept his calm on the exterior. Even if they could send him back, he was unwilling to go. He was here to protect Lai, no matter the cost. If they decided to send them back, he would resist. There was no way he and Lai were going back.

“Is it possible to stay here?” He inquired thoughtfully.
