“Oh, I’d love a coffee. Probably not the best thing to admit to your doctor, but I’m pretty certain caffeine will fuel me most of this week. I know it’ll get better, but for now I am grateful coffee exists,” she said with a grin as she moved over and took a seat in one of the chairs in the sitting area.

Sharah moved over to the replicator and when she returned she was carrying a tray with two pots, two mugs and sugar, cream, and a chilled container. She set the tray on the low table. It was something her Dr Zarath, her first CMO after Academy, always did. Except he served tea. Sharah had a love hate relationship with tea. But she had always liked the ritual and the welcome of serving the drinks rather than simply letting the computer make it.

Like with Hyrushi, Eela felt there was an element of ceremony to the simple act of offering a beverage in this manner. It was the simple act of respect it carried, meant to be something more savoured than just consumed. It set a specific tone to the meeting that Eela appreciated.

She set the tray with the carafe of coffee, a mug, cream and sugar faced Dasca and the other pot, mug and container facing herself before sitting down. The second pot held the aroma of the sweet with hint of bitter hot chocolate, and the chilled container contained tiny marshmallows. “Please help yourself.” Zarath would probably be mortified she didn’t offer to pour and serve, but Fayth had found that often people preferred to customize their drinks themselves. They got it the way they liked it and Sharah was even less of a barista than she was a cook. Fayth sat and lifted the pot and filled me mug 3/4ths full of the chocolate, and dropped a small handful of marshmallows into the mug. “What can I answer for you?” She’d been on Oed less than a month so she wasn’t sure if she would have all the answers, but she would know how to get them.

Eela poured out a cup of coffee and stirred in a very small amount of sugar. “Mostly I’m trying to gauge how much you’re actually taking on that is beyond your duties as Chief Medical Officer. I know as far as medical services go, everyone just works together where they need to, and that it’s bene awhile since there was a hospital Chief. So, what exactly are you managing and what do you need while this is still the case.” She phrased her questions very intentionally, wanting to understand people’s perspectives and not just trust words written in a report. Dasca sipped on her coffee, leaning back in her seat to rest her back a bit.

Fayth blew across the hot chocolate and then took a long sip, savoring the flavor while she thought. “I don’t know that anything I’ve had to do or required to do is outside of what I would be doing as CMO, it’s just more. The forms are different. In Star Fleet we have very specific forms we use for medical records. Civilian files are a bit different, but that’s anywhere. Federation Marine Corps has their own forms, etc. All very thorough, but just slightly different enough to slow the process down a bit. There isn’t anything to be done about that. It’s really not all that different. Supply requests, approval for treatment, review of files, coordinating treatment, seeking outside consultations. My understanding is the Chief of Staff handled all the civilian and OED related forces and the SFCMO handled all fleet cases, Federation Marines, Diplomatic corps etc. As far as doctor to patient interaction it has always been whoever happened to be available for the best fit based on expertise. At least as far as the rules maintained by each individual organization.”

“That makes sense, at least on a higher level,” Eela said before sipping her coffee.

Fayth took another long drink from her mug. “Honestly, it’s just the work load. Dr Helaky is the assistant Chief of Staff for Sacred Heart. Wonderful man, very dedicated, older, nearing retirement. He has just returned from vacation. So I am hoping the work load eases some. However he has made it clear he does not want the position and if forced to fill in too long he’ll retire early. He, as he put it, ‘will spend his final years treating patients and not being an administrator.’ I can understand the sentiment. In that regard, I guess what I need is to have a counter part sooner rather than later.”

“As far as Star Fleet goes…my concern is I haven’t had time to meet all my staff. Things have just been to busy. I know more of the civilian staff than I do fleet. Not for lack of trying. But we have facilities here, planet side, and then in orbit with the Centurion which while docked only has a skeleton crew. If it leaves orbit, I can honestly say I’m not sure where I’m supposed to be. And either way I need a strong team to be where I am not.” If Sharah had her say so she knew where she would rather be, but she’d follow orders no matter what, without complaint. At least official ones.

Fayth, SFCMO

Dasca nodded slowly, clearly processing the information give to her. “So, allowing Helaky to step down and hiring an assistant Chief of Staff is definitely a priority and I’ll add it to the list of positions that need to be discussed.”

“As for the Centurion, that will be a conversation you need to have with the new commanding officer when they arrive. But I’ve been a member of a rapid response team before when I served on a Starbase. It was a similar set-up to what we have here: a ship meant for defence and other specific one-off missions that has a rotating skeleton crew and when needed a portion of a contingent of crew responds quickly to a summons. If that is a role you wish to have, we can make that happen, or if is not, we can easily have one of your juniors lead the medical team while on alert.”

Her right middle finger tapped the cup ash she thought, her eyes narrowing slowly as they focused elsewhere for a moment. “A team cannot function without smoothly without everyone knowing who is who and what is expected of it. I’m still trying to understand the situation here, and I get that there are only so many senior medical staff at the hospital with the experience, but what if you were to delegate your duties one day a week to be based solely at the Starfleet Complex, and on the Centurion as skeleton crew if you wish to be a part of the rapid response?”
