A significant part of her was reeling from this information. So much of it did not make sense. It did not add up. The questions weighed heavily in the air and she did exactly as he asked and gave them serious consideration. At length Eela exhaled a heavy breath. “Those are very good questions. Ones I do not have answer for. I can understand that the reason he was denied the ability to retire his commission is of no concern to you, but it is to me. It… frames the conversation a bit more clearly. I have obviously been given incomplete information and as you can imagine it is not something I enjoy very much, and it makes things more complicated than they need to be. But here we are.”

Eela shook her head, casting her gaze to the side. The irony was thick in this situation. Here was a man who wanted to leave Starfleet, and his situation was being handled by a woman who had desperately wanted to stay in. “It’s not my Starfleet, as you say,” she said, returning her gaze to Urg. “This is just my personal belief, but Starfleet has always seemed to me to be something different for each person. Sometimes it lives up to what they believe, and more, and sometimes it does not. I’ve always felt that people should serve only if their heart is in it. If it’s not, it’s okay to walk away. So I empathize with Luis Vargas. Deeply, Lord Duroc. Because I actually know that feeling, that debate, all too well.”

“I do not know the answer to this situation, other than I need to investigate things on my side more. You are right that four guards for an arrest is unnecessary and I don’t know why that decision was made, but I can find out. For now I see no issue wth Vargas continuing here as he has, since he’s clearly been here awhile. I can apologize for the disrespect shown this embassy on behalf of the others, but that’s a cop out and I don’t abide those. Instead, I ask you what you feel would be acceptable in this situation.” Her hazel eyes gazed deeply at him, seeking understanding and maybe a bit of middle ground. This was, after all, only her first week here and her promise to herself was that she would make no future plans about how she would proceed on Oed until she had had a chance to really get to know the place and the people who resided her. Until she understood them, she had no right to make proclamations or determinations. Clearly, her resolve in this was being mighty tested, but Eela had not made it this far in her life without being flexible. Otherwise she would have broken long ago.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Lord Duroc very clearly studied the Lieutenant Governor very closely for some time. It wasn’t a pleasant experience for most. Disregarding his less than handsome countenance; there was something definitely off about the fire behind the dark eyes. Not ‘off’ likee his childhood doctors had tried to say… no, he was clearly a being of great intellect. But it was the level of intensity which his gaze possessed that made most shift in their seats… if they did not run. Finally, he spoke. His words were softer, less aggressive… but held a tone that spoke of careful consideration and thought before they were uttered.

“Madame, my thoughts are this. We already have a situation that casts both of us in a somewhat negative light. And I refuse to give the impression that my House is at odds with Star Fleet. My first thought is that whatever we do, we do jointly. After that, I would recommend that what we do, we do so publicly. But whatever you and I decide is the appropriate course of action, Vargas will stay with House Duroc. That is non-negotiable.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Having been under intense scrutiny before Eela remained rooted. That didn’t mean there hadn’t been a deep pit of anxiety she was quashing readily. It was simply unease born of being placed in a tenuous situation that she was being asked to solve and being acutely aware of the possibility that accord could slip through her fingers. Regardless of who was the commanding officer of the troops stationed on Oed, Eela was the Commander-in-Chief. They would look to her to set the tone and expectations. Dasca was all too aware that she might very well be damned if she did, and damned if she didn’t, and so her gaze was unflinching under Lord Duroc’s examination, even if it was searchingly hopeful.

“Naturally. I see no good coming of his leaving your House,” Dasca said. “And I agree that we need to stand together in this, but we need a bit of time in order to do this properly. Rushing the process will only cause strife and there are a couple important things I have to do before we make any public announcement. Namely, I know a certain Governor who would be mighty upset with his new Lieutenant Governor if she left him out of the loop on this, and before I see him, I need to investigate things on the Starfleet side more deeply. Otherwise whatever solution I bring to the table will be an empty one and that does neither of us any good. Can you give me until this evening? This incident is going to be public, if it is not already, so we don’t have a lot of time, but I think we can delay a joint statement until evening.” There were several things they needed to discuss and she had one further request, but she needed to tackle one thing at a time.

~Eela Dasca

Urg inclined his head and said “Of course. Although I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on a timeframe. After all, even if the incident does make the scream-sheets, if we don’t respond immediately we can always couch it in terms of ‘Neither of us thought of this as an issue that needed to be addressed. The only one making it into something are those that are reporting on it.’ or something; and then of course issue our joint statement.” Urg laughed somewhat softly. “And then, perhaps, we start an intra-organizational Parises Squares league. Or what is it the humans play? Softball? Sounds absolutely boring.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Eela let out a throaty chuckle. “Hitting things with sticks… oldest sports there are,” she said with a grin. “Not my personal taste, but then again you won’t see me playing any physical sports these days, so take that as you will.” Of course, one could jokingly call both politics and diplomacy sports, in which case she was knee deep in game play.

“If he, and you as well, would permit it, I’d like to speak with Lieutenant Vargas. If I’m to talk to Starfleet and hear their side of the matter, it seems only fair he gets to share his side. I’d like the honour of hearing that personally, if I might.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Urg looked at her and shook his head, but grinned slightly. “You and honor… I swear it’s like talking to the Chancellor’s sycophants. Its not honor, Captain. It’s the smart thing to ask. Just because I’m Klingon doesn’t mean you have to tie everything back to honor. But I get it… old habits and such.” He reached over and grabbed a large brass bell and rang it and a low gong-like sound issued forth. Soon the door opened and Urg said “Find Vargas and bring him here.” and the door closed. Urg stood and went over to the side of the room when a small table with dark crystalline goblets and large pitcher stood. “Drink, Lieutenant Governor?” he asked as he poured a deep, ruby-red liquid into one of the goblets.
