Eela had laughed along with them, feeling a tension in her release. She felt more confident that they understood that she hadn’t made this request for a change in security detail as some sort of stunt to earn her political goodwill. She wasn’t that kind of person. Her candor here was a symbol of the unflinching honesty that she had always carried with her. The only difference at this point in her life was that she had had to relearn tact and then had it tested heavily in the Diplomatic Corps. She exhaled and leaned back in her seat. After a couple more moments, a smile slipped onto her face. “Alright then. I think we can all agree that this is going to work out just fine. And that means we can get down to more practical matters.”

She then reiterated her residential situation. “I have a housekeeper, Sinna Elz, who has already been through the clearance process. And my health care team all have access to the penthouse as well, as most of my physio and massage therapy will happen there. And Cort, my Exec Assistant will have access as well. But yeah, I’m drawing a blank on the best way to prevent unauthorized access. Biometrics are a great barrier to the building and the floor, but a clever person with skills might be able to fake those. And the lift opens right up right into the foyer. There’s no door to guard, so people essentially walk right into my home. And I’d like to not terrify the other people in the building, so please, let’s talk options since I’m not at all used to whatever this is supposed to look like. I’ve never had people guard my home before.”

Nords shifted slightly and leaned forward. “Your concerns are solid ones. So just spitballing here, but what if we did all plainclothes detail? Maybe rent some apartments in the building and have covert observation posts tied into regular building security? You could even leave Fleet Security in charge of building security. We’d just be your personal detail and such. Might save some egos, rather than just kicking them out entirely.”

Tenkiller said “It would be tricky, but we could do it. Fine line between covert observation and somebody thinking we are babysitting if they found out. But I like the idea of a constant presence in the building. Captain? Thoughts? Think you’d like some of your neighbors being CCDA assests?”

“Like might be too strong of a word there,” Dasca said dryly before giving a half-smirk. “But I can admit that beyond a certain practicality and convenience for all of us, it would make me feel better to know that response time to the twelfth floor would be cut down significantly should I need assistance. A panic button system I would assume?”

Her right ring finger tapped the table top a few times as she mulled over the next thing she wanted to bring up. “The other thing I was mulling over was a list of pre-cleared individuals. I have four people in my life I would never deny access to either my home or my floor of the Tower. I’m not suggesting we let them have unlimited access, but I would consider it preferred access. None of them reside on the colony so they’d have to come through customs or official clearance first anyway, but these four people are my two adult children, Caridee and Jourin, my former first officer Benjamin Meyer- who is a starship captain himself these days, and my oldest friend Rear Admiral Roger Kellen, whom I’ve known for over thirty years and knows me better than anyone in this galaxy, including my almost ex-husband. I know it might be a lot to ask, but I’m hell-and-gone from the people I care about most and I want them to know they have an important place in my life. That my role here isn’t a barrier.” She looked around the table to suss out whether her idea had merit or not, or would be shot down without question. She was fine either way, but she thought if she could make the idea of visiting her a tiny bit easier, people might actually feel welcome to make the crazy ass long trip out here. Caridee seemed determined to in any case.

The four looked at each other and then Gam said “We’d probably steer clear of pre-approvals, Ma’am. At least for the time being. With the attack on Holloway and General Harris, now isn’t the time to intentionally put holes in your security. And besides… if the people you listed are as close to you as you say? Then they should realize that your role here requires some extra hoops to jump through. We won’t intentionally makes their times with you harder… but they will ha e to adjust to some degree.” Nords looked at her and said “You aren’t a cog in a diplomatic machine anymore. You are the machine. And that machine has to operate for all of this to keep going.”

Ahhh realities.

Tenkiller looked at Dasca and said “You are the final authority on your security. You order them to pre-approve people, they will. But they aren’t wrong about the timing right now. You should take that into consideration before you decide.”

She offered the group a warm smile. “And I said I was going to trust you all. If you think it’s not a good time, then we leave it until it might be or forget about it altogether. I’m okay with that. It was just an idea. Though I will give you a heads up that my daughter is hoping to bring her husband and my infant granddaughter here for one of our major Haliian holidays. There’s a chance my son might come as well, but I won’t hold my breath on that one. In any case, I’m not sure how far personal protection extends, so even if they aren’t assigned a detail while here, I would feel… more at ease if there were at least eyes on them when they’re about in public without me. Caridee will be understanding. Jourin maybe not so much, but I think it’s a wise precaution.”

Mangioni nodded and said “Security detail extends to anyone who is close to you while they are here. Anyone who could be used as leverage. When your family arrives they will be introduced to their respective teams, briefed, and expected to comply. Simple… straightforward… necessary.” Gam smiled and said “Oh, and don’t worry about your son. Chuck here has a way with resistant people.” and the four and Tenkiller all chuckled at what was apparently an inside joke.

Dasca inhaled slowly and blew out a breath. “It’s going to take a few days for us to knock out the details of this arrangement, so let’s aim to have everything in place by the end of the week. In the meantime, I’ll retain my Starfleet detail for now and we’ll make the transition in a few days. I’m going to be at the Starfleet Complex most of tomorrow anyway.” She flashed them a knowing grin. “And I know you’re going to leave here and go digging and gathering the information you need in order to be as effective as you can be. So, your turn now. Ask me anything.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov

“No questions right now.” Tenkiller said. “When the detail is in place, all of you will finalize the details. OpSec for this assignment is totally compartmentalized. You and the team will devise your security plan, and it will stay within the detail. Only person outside that will know it is me. And I will be told, not designing it.”
