As the tiny shuttle sped through the planetary system, the turbulence intensified. The rocking back and forth of the cabin made the passengers’ heads bob from side to side, and the lights cut off momentarily then quickly came back on. The luggage stored at the bottom of the shuttle made loud thuds as they crashed against each other with each shake and shift. Aiofemi and Samikah were two of seven passengers aboard the aircraft. In the triple fused windows, which were designed to withstand high pressures and reentry temperatures, the fifth planet came into view, so did the massive Spaceport that was orbiting it and Aiofemi sat up, carefully placing one hand on the window as she stretched her neck to get a better look at both the planet and the station.
“Mikah! Look how beautiful it is.” She looked back at her assistant, Samikah, whose hands were clenched to her chest and eyes pressed shut.

Samikah did not open her eyes. “Uhhhh, I don’t want to see it! How long till we land?” she cried out through clenched teeth.

Mikah Jaxsyn, Admin Assist Med. & Soc. Svcs.

Aiofemi pressed her lips together to suppress her smile.
“I think we have about an hour or so left. We must land at the Spaceport first. Then we will take a shuttle to the colony.”

Ai Oshiro, Dir. Med. & Soc. Svcs.

“Oh, god! I can’t stay on here another hour!” Samikah exclaimed, then she stretched her hand out in Ai’s direction. “And we have to get on another shuttle? My astraphobia is making me nauseous.” She placed one hand on her stomach.

Ai reached down and pulled a handkerchief out of her Gorn leather tote, a gift that had been presented to her by her ex-husband after they were married on the USS Honshu. He said that many years ago his father had slain a Gorn in battle and had it’s skin made into a vest for his mother which she wore over a black tunic. Ai’s new husband had the vest repurposed into a bag for her because he knew she had an affinity for such items and a warrior’s vest would not have suited her. Ai had held on to it because one, her ex-husband would not accept it back and two, because of its rarity. As far as she knew no one else in the universe had a Gorn leather bag. She also retrieved a small bottle of peppermint oil from the bag, opened the bottle and dabbed a bit on the handkerchief then handed it to Mikah. “Here put this on your nose and breathe slowly through the nose and exhale through the mouth three times. It will help calm you and remove your nausea.” Then she took hold of Mikah’s hand and began to massage it to comfort her, “It’s okay, Mikah, I am certain you will not die on this shuttle or the other one today. You have a better chance of dying on OED V, you know. There are about 4 million beings living in the colony.”

Ai Oshiro, Dir. Med. & Soc. Svcs.

As she held the handkerchief to her nose, Mikah opened one of her tightly shut eyes and looked at Aiofemi. “That....is a terrible reassurance, Doctor. I am not convinced of my survival either way.”

Mikah Jaxsyn, Admin Assist Med. & Soc. Svcs.

“Oh, you will be fine!” Ai said with enthusiasm. “Hey, if anyone on this shuttle should be terrified,” she waved her hand around to encompass all the other passengers on the shuttle, “it should be me. I once saw a whole starship go up in burst into flames and blow up after barely escaping from it.”

“I once saw a whole starship go up in burst into flames and blow up after barely escaping from it.” Samikah mimicked Aiofemi as she snatched her hand from her, and turned as far sideways way from her as her seatbelt would allow as she cover her whole face with the handkerchief. “I am never ever flying again. Ever! Which means I am never leaving this planet. And I guess that means I will have to build up the remainder my life on Oed. I certainly hope there are some decent-looking male species in the colony.”

Aiofemi laughed, as she patted her friend on her shoulder. “All will be well, you will see.”
When the shuttle approached the Spaceport station and the Orbital Platform, Ai squinted her eyes and was able to make out the tiny dot of the colony below on the surface of the planet.
The intercoms on the shuttle activated and the pilot said in a folksy drawl, “Intergalactic males, females, and everything in between we have been cleared for landing on the Oed V Spaceport. This will be your first stop before your final destination to the colony. Any pets, food, and merchandise will need to be cleared by customs. Please remain in your seats as we prepare for landing and do not attempt to exit the shuttle until the doors are opened. And thank you for flying with Galaxy Cruise Control, the only intergalactic flight service that will Fly You Anywhere in the Universe and Land You At Your Dream Destination.”
Ai loved that slogan. It really fit her whole situation at the moment. The job she’d taken on the OED was her dream job therefore this planet and colony was going to for sure be her dream destination.
Ai asked Mikah, do you have anything that needs to be cleared by customs?”
Mikah lifted her head and shook it, but the look on her face indicated she was probably uncertain.
“Well,” Ai continued, “I think our layover here will be a little over an hour or so. We should go explore, get something to eat. I will need to check in with the Governor or Lt. Governor when I arrive on planet later, and I am sure there will be very little time to do any exploring from that point on. You don’t have to review them now, but I have already prepared a list of tasks that I will need to see to tomorrow morning.”
