McBride considered Cattaneo and quirked an eyebrow. “No questions at all? Okay, well if you’re in a hurry, you’re more than free to go,” the captain said with a loose gesture towards the door. It might have seemed flippant but he wasn’t about to waste either of their time. He certainly had enough of his own work to do.

Tiberius looked at the captain a little strange and somewhat confused and responded, “I am not in a hurry at all. I just did not have any questions as of yet. I am just taking everything in with the colony and trying to absorb as much as I can. Having all new folks to remember can be difficult for me. I was by no means trying to seem rushed and I apologize if it did.” He wondered if he already got on the wrong side of the captain. He was hoping he had not.

Silence filled the room for a few moments before the captain spoke again. “You didn’t have questions in the meeting with Dasca, and you don’t have questions now. You should have questions, Commander. This is a colony with millions of people. You’re in charge of Starfleet Security. You should have have a ton of questions that may or may not be able to be answered, but you should be thinking about it all and jumping in. Right now I’m getting the impression of someone who is reactive, rather than proactive and while I’ve only been here a few hours myself, I can tell you already this place will eat you alive. I don’t have time to babysit officers. You’re supposed to be experienced. Show me how you’re going to put that use here. My expectations are that you know what you’re doing and are willing to jump in, but if you don’t even have the observational skills to formulate questions that untrained people only here a few minutes would have, then I have serious reservations about your assignment here.”

Tiberius though for a second and responded, “I do have a number of questions but because I am new, I do not want to start stirring the pot or ruffling feathers. I like to try and take as much as I can in and then start create a list of questions from there. I apologize if that is not how your crew to ask questions.” Tiberius then asked, “What sort of footprint does Starfleet have with the colony and what sort of numbers on planet do we have from a Starfleet security staff? I am assuming this will be all available to me once I am able to setting in and read all the reports in my office. I just have not gotten to that point. Also, what has been going on from a security standpoint over the last few weeks? Have there been any major accidents or issues from a Starfleet security standpoint?” He then paused for a second and then continue, “What sort of items was the previous Chief of Security working on and what progress had been made prior to my arrival? ” Tiberius was hoping he was not over stepping his bounds as the Cheif.

McBride seemed genuinely amused. “For the record, showing an interest in the place that you’re assigned to is never stepping on toes. Making decisions without consulting the people they affect definitely would, but gathering information pretty much forms the basis of being a security officer, don’t you think?”

Tiberius thought for just a second before responding. He then answered the captain, “I understand and agree now that you explained it like that. Thank you for clearing it up.” Tiberius now believed asking questions was for the best and allowed him to understand better what was going on. He was a little worried, especially with something as large of Oed V and not just the standard crew of a starship. He was going to get use to this major change and improve himself in his position.

“As for your questions… the Starfleet complement varies on a week to week and sometimes daily basis but is somewhere in the twenty-five to thirty thousand range. Security usually accounts for ten percent. We have our own space here at the Complex, which is not tiny by any stretch of the imagination, but many are stationed on the orbital platform and of course we have vessels up there too, not just the Centurion. The local police and the CCDA handle most of the public safety issues but Starfleet still has jurisdiction in certain areas and we often run joint security for the government buildings. We also handle security for the Lieutenant Governor’s apartment building, but the CCDA now handles her personal security. When she’s at the Complex, she’s ours to look after and trust me when I say we take that seriously. Assassination attempts on government official seems to have become something of a sport around here, and I don’t think either of us wants anything to happen to her on our watch.”

Tiberius took in the information which the captain spoke towards. He then asked another question, “Just so I understand 100%, is the main security office for Starfleet in our space in the Complex and in the oribital platform or just in one of the two places? I believe there is not a security office on the Centurion as normally those are just stations on the bridge on a vessel of that size. ” Tiberius assumed it would be in both places but just wanted to make sure. He then responded to the aspect of the Lt Governor protection, “Yes, I would never want to have an assassination occur, especially when we are on watch for her protection or anyone else’s for that matter.

“As for your predecessor, nothing of note, though crew rotations have been frequent and we could use some stability in that regard. People have been filling in as best they can, so after you get settled in and evaluate personnel, you’ll want to choose an Assistant Chief of Security.”

“Having crew rotations can cause alot of problems. Having the same members on a team help with knowing how each other work and what to be expected. When people come and go often, it is not helpful. Having an Assistant Chief on a complex this large is very important. Trying to manage that many people alone, will never work. Having a 2nd and even a 3rd person to help out can be important.”

“Even if you haven’t read reports, I’m sure you’ve at least heard of the attack on the City Centre that took down Lucas Holloway’s shuttle which also contained General Harris. That situation is under control and not Starfleet jurisdiction, so unless they ask for our help explicitly, we let things be and simply keep an eye on things that are within our jurisdiction.”

Tiberius understood what the captain was saying here. He did not want to step in somewhere that would a larger rift between the colony and Starfleet. having a positive relationship is important and maybe staying out of the way during this investigation would help start mending the issue.
