Kristina turned towards him, her face softening. “They can’t send you back, surely? We don’t even have that kind of technology around here. Even if they did, it would take time. Maybe you could make a case to the Federation for asylum?” she said before looking back to Astrid for confirmation it was a valid idea.

~Kristina Cosgrove

Her eyes rose as the question was presented to her. She knew of some cases involving others from alternate universes, though often it was due to the damage and aws they broke. “I would have to look into the intricacies of the law, but offhand I think it can be done. I can get st…”

At that moment, Akem could a stirring within Lai. The inner working of her mind coming back to the surface seemed almost imminent as he started to turn.

A murmur escaped Lai’s lips as she slept, following by a frown settling into her features. Despite the calm Akem surrounded her with, her mind was still processing what had happened to them. Hot pain pierced her body and she gasped, bolting upright, hands pressed to the place where the bullet moved through her chest. Eyes wide with terror, they were the same gold-ringed hazel eyes that Halai had and she surely was the mirror of the other woman despite the missing facial tattoos.

~Lai Kitrian

She turned as the woman who so mirrored Halai sat up with a jolt. Astrid stepped forward until she remembered that this was not her friend and likely had no idea who she was. The last thing she wished to do was cause this poor woman any more harm so she took a step back to allow the other two in the room to go to her instead.

“Lai,” he said as he quickly stepped to her, hands reaching to her to touch as he allowed his mind to connect with hers. He brought his eyes directly to her own. “You’re safe. I’m not letting anymore happen to you.” He then brought one hand gently to her face.

Her head tipping up to his, Lai relaxed as both his touch and her own deep breath calmed her body. Meeting his gaze she let his reassurance settle her.

But she was all too aware that they were not alone, so she turned her head to take in Kristina and another woman. This newcomer was full of worry, that much she could tell. But it was a familiar worry too. “You knew the other woman,” she said , feeling confident in her determination, if still cautious.

~Lai Kitrian

“Lai, this is Judge Astrid Rousseau, our head of the Judiciary. And yes, she was friends with my sister,” Kristina said. She was hopeful that Rousseau could help Akem and Lai feel safe here. The last thing the pair needed was to be whisked away like some sort of curiosities. They needed to have protected status of some kind, some way to keep them here if this is where they felt safe.

~Kristina Cosgrove

Astrid met Lai’s eyes with her dark ones and gave her a half smile that was meant to be reassuring, opening herself up just a little to the woman should she wish to know more about Astrid’s emotional state. “I would have to double check, but I believe you are safe here in this universe. As far as I can remember, we have never done anything to detain or harm people from alternate universes unless they have broken our laws. Please know that you are safe here for the immediate future.”

Whether it was reassuring to Lai was hard to say some an observer’s perspective, but Akem would know that something in her relaxed ever so slightly.

She wished she could give them all more good news or guarantees, but she didn’t know the Federation’s legal stance on Alternate reality persons well enough to be confident that there was a way to keep them here permanently. “But yes, in answer to your question, I was friends with Halai. I thought it was her who was here. Miss Cosgrove tells me that they have been caring for your physical injuries. I am glad that you are not suffering from them any more.”

Lai nodded.

The Judge didn’t know what to do or say next. It wasn’t Halai. She barely knew Kristina. She felt a bit like an intruder. “I will.... I will speak to the doctors to make sure to impress upon them that you receive the highest calibre of care while here. Then I shall go to my office and get you some answers regarding alternate universal law. It shouldn’t take long.”

“I appreciate that,” Lai said. “I understand that this is confusing for all of you. All I ask if that everyone remember how confusing it is for Akem and I as well. We did not ask to come here, but it is better than where we were.”

~Lai Kitrian

“Of course.” She nodded, not sure why Lai felt the need to point out how confusing it was for her and her friend. Of course it had to be confusing, she thought. Switching universes was akin to being sent to the delta quadrant. This was a foreign place where their positions were uncertain, and their futures placed in the hands of strangers they could not possibly trust.

Kristina smiled softly. “We’ll try not to forget,” she said before looking at Rousseau. “I’ll walk you out,” she said to the Justice.

Again Astrid nodded. With a soft and hopefully reassuring smile to the couple, she departed respectfully to leave them in peace.

It wasn’t that Astrid needed her to go along, but Kristina wanted a word in private. Quietly in the corridor, she spoke softly. “Assuming we can grant them some sort of protected status, what would that mean? They have nothing here? And she can’t stay in the hospital forever.”

~Kristina Cosgrove

Astrid understood Kristina wished to speak with her privately and was open to the idea. Once they left the room and had a moment of privacy in the corridor, she turned to listen. Kristina brought up a whole other dilemma that had Astrid’s mind working. “Well, depending on the status, they might receive some kind of stipend to help them get settled. Obviously, their needs are urgent. It seems that Lai is probably only going to be here for another day or two. Do we have any idea that they might have been followed by others from their Universe?”
