Subject: Early Childhood Education Director

Dr. Edman:

My name is Karina Enger and I am the Educational Director on the colony of Oed V. I recently took over this position six months ago. In that time it has become glaringly obvious that the school is suffering, especially with our youngest charges.

I have followed your research and publications for some time and I believe that your approach to early education is what our school needs. Our entire educational system is being revamped, and I want to offer you a position here on Oed V as an assistant director in charge of Early Education. I would like to discuss the details of the changes happening here and of the position with you in greater detail. I have included several days and times I am available for a prolonged call. If these are not convient for you please let me know what would work for you.

Sincerely,
Karina Enger,
Educational Director, Oed V

Karina looked at the letter several times, reworded, deleted, added, adjusted until she was satisfied. It was direct and to the point. Karina despised long winded letters that were nothing but brown nosing. She wanted to offer the woman a job, she knew without a doubt she was the best person for what she had in mind. Now she just had to wait and see if Ms. Edman was interested.

Enger, ED

Runa was two days into her trip home. How had this happened? Ragna attacked by some puffed up rotten pastry, in her own HOME. She knew there were problems in Mike’s family. Gravel had told her a bit about it, Revna had as well. She just couldn’t imagine Mike coming from a family that would treat another person that way. What she couldn’t understand was how Ragna had gotten into the situation. Yes her sister had a mouth and a temper, but she could hold her own in a fight, so how did she get so incredibly hurt? She’d boarded the ship from the shuttle this morning. Revna and Mike were out of touch but Renva had messaged their parents they were on their way. She had spoken to her mother a few hours ago, and apparently Ragna was okay, physically. She was giving everyone hell and dotting on a black ram. Something about the animal saving her life. Runa thought maybe Ragna had hit her head harder than anyone realized.

Runa was taking the time to catch up on a lot of correspondence that she’d been putting off while trying to run Mike’s bar and teach at the same time. Not to mention picking up a few counseling sessions. Which she was totally unqualified for, but she’d done it to help out. There were several scholarship recipients who had messaged her, either to keep in touch or asking for advice or assistance. She answered those needing help first. She shouldn’t have put those off. Luckily, nothing was time sesitive and she was able to handle them quickly. The very last letter in the stack was from a woman named Karina Enger. Runa was not familiar with her and opened it to read.

It wasn’t the first time she’d been offered a position before having an interview. The letter was a bit short and very direct. A quick search on the woman revealed the reason why. She was Cairn and they tended to be direct and lacked the overly descriptive tendencies of other species in their correspondence and conversation. Runa didn’t know what was going on at home yet, and she wasn’t sure what, where, when, or how things would develop and she couldn’t make commitments right then.

Re: Subject: Early Childhood Education Director

Ms. Enger:

First I would like to thank you for the offer. Under normal circumstances I would be eager to discuss the opportunity with you. However, I am currently returning home, and I have always put family as my first priority. With circumstances as they are, I am unwilling to make any commitment at the time. I would be happy to consult on your early education setting and offer what assistance I can over subspace. The position you are offering intriguing and a challenge. Perhaps if you have not filled it, when I know what my circumstances will be, we could discuss your offer in detail at a later date.

Sincerely,
Dr. Runa Edman

Not knowing exactly where Dr Edman was currently residing and with subspace and relays, and etc Karina was not expecting an immediate response to her letter. When the reply came it was not the answer she was hoping for. She understand the connection to family. Cairn were fiercely connected to theirs, often making new plans and goals in order to stay physically close to family. Karina was different that way. She loved her family but she had had an overwhelming need to see new places. And…maybe…she’d found her own family in the process. She smiled thinking about Jodar and Rondara, but right now she needed to draft a reply to Dr. Edman’s letter.

She didn’t want to push the woman, but there was quite a bit of time before she would need to be there. She’d said she was interested, and Karina was willing to keep the position open until she knew for sure if Edman was interested or not. She was willing to consult so Karina decided that the best way would to be send photos of their current classrooms.

Dr. Edman,

Thank you for your response. I have included current images of our Early Education classrooms. I am hoping to make easy and minor adjustments for the moment. We are beginning the process of designing and constructing a new building. Our entire staff will be involved in the design process. Hopefully in a year we will be moving into the new school. Any changes made now I am hoping to be mobile, so that we can take it all with us.

Unfortunately, as you can see, we have very little physical space in the rooms. I know you are a huge supporter of real books, and though that is a future goal for our new school, I simply don’t have the space and must rely on digital books. Any suggestions or advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Karina Enger

Runa had a day left to her trip. Gravel had really out done himself getting her home in a hurry. Then again, maybe not. Booking passage as a civilian was always hit or miss, maybe not for one of the best security chiefs in Star Fleet. She was really going to miss him and his quick wit. She still didn’t know what all that was about the jukebox in the bar. It didn’t really seem all that important now though. She stared out the window lost in thought. It was good she was going home. Runa loved life and teaching and people, but she felt off center, adrift and a bit lost. She’d been away from home too long, and she felt horrible that it took such circumstances to make her realize that.

She received Enger’s reply and she read over it and the photos. It was not lost on her that Ms Enger was trying to quietly entice her to take the job. Designing her dream education center would be amazing, but given the circumstances at home, it wasn’t enough to get her to take the position out right. Looking through the photos she shook her head. The rooms were very plain and uninteresting, and very, extremely computerized. Some of the rooms didn’t even have windows to look outside. And that was a sad state of affairs given Oed V was a colony planet. She jotted a few notes down on how to adjust the classrooms for the time being as well as some techniques to use. She hit send just as the chime on her door rang. A very polite, young, ops officer stood there with an antigrav sled to get her trunk and escort her to the transporter room so she could catch the last part of her flight home.

It had been quite a year. The building and development of the university had taken up most of Karina’s time. She had not forgotten her correspondence with Ms Edman, and had sent photos of their temporary remodel along with her thanks.

Ms Edman,

Your suggestions have been invaluable and I have included photos of our revised spaces. Also some of our teachers have included their own questions.

We are in the process of building new early education centers all over the colony. I have included rough sketches of what we are hoping the buildings and classrooms will look like. Your insight and expertise has been most valuable; we are all grateful for your assistance.
