Jeanette gave a gracious bow of her head with a warm smile. “I appreciate the advice and will take it to heart,” she said sincerely. The thing about her position was that people often assumed that she was always speaking to say what people wanted to hear, and on occasion that could be true when it was necessary, but Mathis had spent far too long in her line of work to be anything less than pragmatic. That and she was generally a sincere person.

A few minutes later, Mathis and her family were settled on the shuttle and it was cleared for departure.

At the designated spot, the shuttle was cleared for landing. Jeanette leaned over and kissed her spouse on the cheek. “You okay to go on to the house, or did you want to stay here and meet people, maybe get a tour?”

“Seriously, do we have to?” Jessie said, with an all-too-expected theatrical sigh.

“No, but I thought it might be nice,” she said, exchanging a look with Ren.

Ren smirked. “I’ll get us settled in lest we create an incident in the first hour. I think you have enough to deal with.”

“You’re not wrong,” Jeannette said, offering a smile of affectionate gratitude. this was why they worked so well together: Ren understood Jeanette’s job sometimes better than she did and never begrudged her the idiosyncrasies that came with it. It certainly helped that Ren’s work was portable and thus they could travel the galaxy together, but ever since Jessie was born they had tried to have a stable place to call home more often than not. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn’t. “I’d say I’ll be home for dinner, but I could be here awhile. Save me something?”

Ren winked. “Done deal.”

The shuttle had settled on an pad designated ‘For Official Use Only’. It was on the ground and surrounded by high walls, but open to the sky above.

The ambassador stepped out, work bag slung over her shoulder in anticipation of a possibly long day. She stepped away to give clearance and gave a wave before it lifted off. Dash was right behind her, his usual calm presence steeling her for the inevitable meeting. They exchanged a look and he just quirked a brow- ne simple gesture saying plenty.

Turning to the security waiting for her, she gave a bow of her head. “Just point us in the right direction, if you don’t mind?”

~Ambassador Mathis

The officer said “Of course. The Government Tower is that building there-” and she pointed up towards a tall building nearby. “There is a ground car waiting for you, but it is only two blocks if you wish to walk. We will, of course, have a small security detail escort you.” and she made a gesture and two figures pushed off the wall by the door and walked forward. One was a Deltan, and one was Klingon. The Deltan spoke and said “Ambassador, welcome to Oed V. I am Sergent Rills, this is Officer G’tok. Oed Police.” and they showed the Ambassador their badges and holo-IDs.

She gave a nod to each of them and gestured to Jones. “This is my attaché, Dashiel Jones.”

“Since it’s so close I’m of a mind to walk. We’re well used to security procedures, so no issues there. But if there are any that are specific to Oed, by all means give us a heads up. We don’t want to get in the way of anyone doing their jobs,” Mathis said. She had been doing this job long enough that she wasn’t fazed by the presence of security, nor the need to be escorted pretty much everywhere. It was just a part of the job.

The Klingon laughed and said “Just get down if we tall ya too, and everything will be fine.”

“Shall we?” Jeannette said to Dash.

“Let’s,” he replied, setting off at an easy pace. They arrived shortly at the Government Tower and he automatically slowed by half a step as they entered. It was a subtle sign of respect for her higher diplomatic rank that she never asked for but he felt Jean deserved and cost him nothing to execute.

They approached the desk and presented their credentials. “I do believe the Governor and Lieutenant Governor are expecting us but I’m not sure where I’m supposed to be meeting them.”

~Ambassador Mathis

The desk was a combination of reception and security, but an enthusiastic young Denoblian looked up and said “Of course. Please identify yourself, if you would please.” and he slid a palm reader across the desk to her.

“Ambassador Jeanette Mathis,” she said simply reaching out her hand, used to the slight variations this processed entailed.

The man with her did the same. “Dashiel Jones.”

As they placed their palms on the device, they were fully scanned head to toe and biometrics were compared to the ones on file when the appointment was made. The security officer watched the scans with a practiced eye, looked at the IDs, and then nodded to the receptionist. “You are cleared to enter, Madame Ambassador. The turbolift you want is the last one on the left. It will take you directly to the Governor’s office. That is where your meeting will be held. Welcome to Oed V.” and he gestured towards the far bank of lifts.

“Thank you,” Mathis said with appreciation.

The pair set off for the lifts and entered the one that had been indicated to them. Jeannette gazed at Jones as they began to move upwards. “Here goes nothing.”

He offered her a reassuring smile. “Jean, I’ve worked with you for eight years now. Yes, you stumble at times, but the one thing I’ve always known you to do is admit your mistakes and strive to make amends. It’s all you can do here. They know what’s at stake and they’re not going to go out of their way to make your job more difficult. Not if they know that you’re really on their side.”

She breathed out through her lips. “I know. I guess i just needed to hear it aloud.”

“You’ve got this, and I’m right here with you,” Dash said, reaching out and giving her shoulder a squeeze.

“Well, one thing is for certain, we have the pep talks down.”

“Naturally,” Jones said, flashing a grin.

They stepped out a minute later and approached Fen’s desk. Jeanette was dressed slightly casually in tan slacks, a light blue sweater and a simple black blazer in a soft material that was left open. it was comfortable for travelling but still made her look put together. Her long bright blond hair hung loose.

Jones was dressed in black slacks and a dark green turtleneck sweater, his piercing pale blue eyes scanning the floor critically. He had thick, wavy dark brown hair streaked with silver and short trimmed beard.

Inside Hyrushi’s office, they had received the notification that Mathis and Jones were on their way up. Eela sat in a chair in the sitting area they often conversed in (more friendly than at his desk) and she uncrossed the leg from her knee. “Well, here we go. Whatever happens, we’ve got precious little time to work it all out, and I know her record, so I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Kenzo’s face remained impassive and neutral, but he said “I will reserve my opinion until after we have our meeting. But I hope she meets your expectations, at least. That will give us at least a small something to work with.”

In the reception area, Dorma Fen greeted the two individuals with aplomb and courtesy. “Madame Ambassador, welcome. Mr. Jones, a pleasure. The Ho error and Lieutenant Governor are waiting inside. Please-” and the large, tall wooden doors to the Governor’s office swung outward, “- do go in. And if I can be of assistance, just let me know.” and she gestured to the now-open doorway.

Inside, Hyrushi rose as the doors opened. He was dressed in a dark gray silk suit with a dark green vest and shirt. His hair, as usual, was long and straight down his back. “Madame Ambassador, welcome. May I introduce Captain Eela Dasca, the colony’s Lieutenant Governor. And I am Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi, Governor. Please do be seated.” and he gestured to the open seats on the couch and the other unoccupied chair.
