In the reception area, Dorma Fen greeted the two individuals with aplomb and courtesy. “Madame Ambassador, welcome. Mr. Jones, a pleasure. The Ho error and Lieutenant Governor are waiting inside. Please-” and the large, tall wooden doors to the Governor’s office swung outward, “- do go in. And if I can be of assistance, just let me know.” and she gestured to the now-open doorway.

“Thank you,” Jeanette said with a bow of her head.

Jones leaned over slightly and gave Fen a smile. “I look forward to working together. Please do forward anything that needs to come our way through me and I’ll make sure it’s seen to.”

Fen looked up at him and smiled a most professional and yet sarcastic smile and said “If anything comes across my desk that I think you can handle, Mr. Jones, I’ll be sure to let you know.” and she looked down at her blank desk display and pretended to read while twirling a stylus on her fingers.

His smile shifted into a grin as she moved away.

Inside, Hyrushi rose as the doors opened. He was dressed in a dark gray silk suit with a dark green vest and shirt. His hair, as usual, was long and straight down his back. “Madame Ambassador, welcome. May I introduce Captain Eela Dasca, the colony’s Lieutenant Governor. And I am Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi, Governor. Please do be seated.” and he gestured to the open seats on the couch and the other unoccupied chair.

Hyrushi, Governor

Mathis offered a sincere smile. “Thank you. I’d like to introduce you both to my attaché, Dashiel Jones.”

Dash bowed his head to both Hyrushi and Dasca. “I’m honoured to be here for such an important time,” he said to the Governor. He shifted his attention to Eela and smiled. “And ma’am, it’s a pleasure to meet you again. Your reputation precedes you. Good things, of course.”

Dasca couldn’t help the snort that escaped. “I’m glad you clarified. Depending on who you talk to, that reputation could be a varied thing, especially lately.” She also couldn’t help mirroring his smile as there was something infectious about it.

They both took a seat.

Mathis gazed at the two people she most needed to build a rapport with. “I would like to start by offering my sincerest apologies. I was assigned to this situation rather last minute and given only partial information. A situation I have since addressed and proceeded to fix. But that is no excuse for how things went down with Ambassador Kek. While it was on the surface a positive conversation, I am very aware that mistakes have been made in regards to Oed and the level of consultation that should have occurred but did not. I cannot change that, so all I can offer is my apologies and my promise that going forward I will be working with you. We are content to let you take the lead. I am here to offer my assistance however I can, but you two are the leaders of this planet and the one people will be looking to for guidance about how to react to the Vren. I know I have to earn people’s trust here and that takes time we might not have. So all I ask is for you to believe me when I say that I am here with the best of intentions and there will be more communication in advance going forward.” At her core, Mathis was a straight-shooter, so she hoped her sincerity came through both her words and emotions.

There was no dissembling. Just honesty and more than a touch of humbleness that was not in anyway put upon. “I believe you,” Dasca said, as much for Kenzo’s benefit as their guests’. “We’ll have a hard enough time convincing the colonists that this is a good thing without external variables thrust upon us without our consideration.”

Hyrushi read the woman’s emotions and knew they were sincere… as were her words. He inclined his head to her and said “I believe that you believe what you are saying to be true. So I will accept that. I sincerely hope that those who put us in this position prior to this meeting allow that room happen.” It was as close to an acceptance as the Federation Ambassador would get, but it was far more than most had received.

Jeannette nodded in appreciation.

“Now to the Vren. I believe the first conversation was productive, if not an abject success. The question now becomes… how do we disseminate this to the public without causing a panic.”

Hyrushi, Gov.

“We’ve been brainstorming about just that,” Mathis said. “The way I see it there are a couple ways we can go, but much depends on the very general perspective and attitudes of the people of Oed. There will be a loud minority who will protest any interactions with the Vren. It’s almost guaranteed in situations like this. But what is less known and where Dash and I will lean on you two is to know the heart of the quieter majority. Are they at their core compassionate people? Would appealing to their sense of right and wrong and a desire to help allow them to see the Vren as people too, and not just the previous faceless enemy? If so, then being up front and laying out the critical situation the Ven are dealing with, and appealing to their hearts might be the way to go. Whole Vren nurseries are being affected and dying children tend to cut through a lot of the noise. But on the other hand, if you expect suspicion and distrust to reign more supreme, then we might be better off doling out the information in precisely considered stages, ending with the Vren’s explanation for the ceremony, followed by the ceremony.”

Dash nodded. “I think it’s important that no matter how we approach this, the colonists understand that the Vren of before are not the same as the Vren now. There is a significant cultural shift going on, as evidenced by Ambassador Kek themself. The Ambassador represents a new generation of Vren that are not content to let the old ways hold back their society and allow their climatological crisis to continue. They are undoubtedly the best candidate to show Oed that the Vren of before are not the Vren today and that they are reaching out in friendship in a time of true need.”

Eela couldn’t help the frown that touched her lips. She was too new here still and while she had settled in, she was the wrong person to ask about the heart of the people of Oed. She shook her head. “I’m the wrong person to ask in this,” she said, turning her gaze upon Kenzo. “I can speak to my interactions with individuals but I’m still very new here. Maybe in a couple months I could answer differently but right now your insights will be more accurate.”
