Dasca studied him intently for a moment, her hazel eyes lighting up a moment before she smiled. “Yes and no, but where it doesn’t I suspect I will be best to just learn as I go and adapt as we get to know one another. What you should know about me, Minister, is that I suffer no fools. I have little time and energy for games and engage in them only if there is no other way. Your best bet is to be direct with me. Besides, even if I can’t read you emathically, I am a trained psychologist and I’m pretty good at reading people anywhere. But I am not infallible either. I can make mistakes. And if I make one with you, let me know and we can make things right. I can’t fix what I don’t know about.”

“Well then we can agree on a couple of things right of the bat as they say. I do not like fools either and do not tolerate them either. I am a very direct Ferengi and will always be upfront with you just like I have been doing with you so far. I may not to be able to read minds and I am not a trained psychologist but I too am well versed at reading people. It is something that all Ferengi are taught to do. That is how we know what is best to say in a given moment in order to seal the deal so to speak and has led me up to the position that I held in the Alliance. But I am telling you the truth now, just like when I told the Governor himself a month or so ago. Besides, if I fail at this and or try anything out of the ordinary in my new position as Minister of Finance, I will be killed. Plain and simple. Either by the Alliance for leaving and turning on them or by the Governor himself. I do believe that that is a very good incentive, do you not agree?”

Eela let the space around them fill with silence as she contemplated her response. It would be simple to just agree with a bit of a laugh, but if she knew anything about life on this colony this far, is that even a mocking truth deserved respect. “I would agree on the surface, but let me offer you this… coercion, even for the supposed greater good is not going to be useful for all of us together in the long run. You should want to do well, not just because there is a phantom knife at your throat. I suspect that if you took some time to really dig deeper, you’d find a better reason that’s all your own.”

“Hmm. You are right. I am genuinely trying to be better. That I am very serious about. As far as the phantom knife at my throat, that is something that I will have to deal with in due time. But I am changing on my own. I am glad I had the intervention I had but wished I had it sooner. But rest assured I will be doing my best at this job and I plan not to fail at it. I have been training my whole life for this position and with my experience, I will not fail and I will not faulter. So what do you want to do now?”

“Now? Now we get to work, Minister. Is there anything else I need to know before we both go about our day?” Dasca asked. As much as these meetings were a courtesy, she really did want to know about each realm of the colony in a way that went beyond reading reports.
