Sharah laughed, “Oh you’re fine. I have to deal with General Tenkiller and his random disruptive inspections every single day. If I can survive that, you can survive this.” Absolute delight and amusement rolled off of her in waves.

Eela shot her a dry look and gave a little harumph as she moved off down the small hallway towards her office. Her irritation was entirely feigned though.

Sharah knew if Eela was privy to all the details she would be laughing hysterically at and with Sharah. Sharah grinned and winked at Elema and followed Eela down the hall.

On Elema’s screen a letter appeared from one Alice Shrine, Head Nurse, Sacred Heart Hospital. The subject was “Sacred Heart’s Yearly Fundraiser.”

Elema moved back to her workstation and curiosity made her open the message immediately…

It was a request from the head nurse who was in charge of Sacred Heart’s annual fundraiser. This year’s recipient would be the refugees and shelters that had been put into place. Nurse Shrine was in need of a few more notable volunteers and would like to speak to the Lt Gov about possibly making use of her time.

Elema read the message and downloaded it onto a PADD. While it would seem on the surface that keeping everything within the system would be the easier way, in their experience it was much easier to deal with specific tasks, messages or projects where everyone was privy to the details. If she just sent it to Cort, who dealt with Dasca’s schedule, then there would be a delay and both the pertinent parties were ten metres away from her.

Meanwhile, Dasca led Sharah into the large rectangular office, which took over the corner of the building and was filled with windows directly ahead and to the right. Dasca’s polished black desk was L-shaped and set in the right corner so her back was to the windows, but she could gaze out along the long side. Currently, on this pleasant sunny day, the windows were strategically tinted to block glare on her computer screen. In front of her desk were two chairs backed by a decorative screen made of transparent glass tiles creating a mosaic of a mountainous landscape with a large waterfall. Hooked off the side of her desk was the black cane she used that nearly blended into the desk.

On the other side of the screen was a large oval table in the same black polished wood as her desk. It was set with many chairs around it that could double as a meeting space as well as a dining table. Adjacent to that in what was framed as a U-Shaped sitting nook were a large dark blue couch flanked by two light grey arm chairs nestled around an oval coffee table. It was something of an art piece, with a clear glass top and the base was a dark wood spiral that narrowed down to a round footing. Matching side tables were tucked in the ‘corners’ between the sofa and arm chairs.

Throughout the space were plants of various sizes from small trees to a living arrangement on her desk in a stone bowl. Hanging plants were strategically hung from the ceiling to take up blank space or help divide the large office into the cozier work and lounge areas. The interior walls were bare still, but then again Dasca had only been there a short while.

Sharah loved it. “Trying to recreate your balcony?” The doctor closed her eyes and listened for a moment, a smile worthy of Mona Lisa crossing her lips.

Eela grinned. “Not so intentionally, but it’s becoming that way. I love the big office and large windows but I find it a bit disorienting at times. It’s nice to have specific places for my eyes to drift and ground myself while I’m so high up off the ground.” It was not unlike being in space but she actually found it harder after so many years of being on ships to be planetside but far off the ground.

A tall man with warm brown hair and a beard was standing behind the desk, sorting a stack of padds into piles. He looked up with pale blue eyes and smiled before openly laughing at the vine wrapped Dasca. His gaze shifted to Fayth. “What sort of trouble have you gotten her into and do I need to write a report about it?” he said.

Fayth laughed, “Oh all kinds, but I promise no report is necessary for this.”

“Thank goodness, we’re drowning in them,” he said, gesturing to the desk.

“Ignore him,” Dasca said even as she gestured between them. “Sharah, this is Cort, my EA and pain in the ass. It’s too bad he’s so damn good at his job.”

Belanger placed a hand to the side of his mouth while juggling the padd-stack. “It’s a part of the job description,” he said with a feigned whisper.

“Ah so you’re Cort. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She stepped over and held out her hand, “Good, keep it up, it’s good for her.” Sharah set her bag down and waited. She wasn’t sure if Eela would want to do this with others around. She also didn’t want to bother them if they needed to talk first though.

“Have to earn my keep somehow,” he bantered back. Cort shook her hand with a warm smile and he seemed to give off the energy of someone who was exceptionally easy going, but very on the ball and noticed all the details.

Eela carefully set the plant down on the other corner of her desk and watched as the leaves curled up again as she gently unwound the vines from around her shoulders.
Cort tilted his head as he studied the plant. “You know, if you want a pet, we could arrange it.”
She smirked. “This one found me, and I don’t know that pet is so much the right word. Now, fill me in so I can have the rest of my hour,” she said, gesturing the three piles of padds he had been organizing. She winked at Sharah, as if to say she’d just be a minute.

He pointed to the first one. “P1 Reading.” To the second he said, “P2.” Cort then set the rest of his padds on top of the two in pile three and gave her an apologetic look. “P1 Response in order of time sensitivity. Top six need to be done today.”

She eyed him. “I think you better just go ahead and plan to order me dinner. Zukara’s would be nice tonight.” It was either work late or she took her work home with her and she really disliked the latter and avoided it whenever she could. Though lately it was becoming untenable and at least at home she wasn’t publicly available. It was the realization that they might need to rethink how they handled a few things.

Sreer slipped into the office and handed Cort a padd, who then skimmed it and nodded. Elema slipped back out without a word. Cort waved the padd. “Before I go and leave you two to whatever you need to do, there’s a request from the hospital from Nurse Shrine to discuss you possibly volunteering some of your time with this year’s fundraiser. Should I book her in?”

Sharah had taken a seat in one of the chairs while they talked, but when Cort relayed that message Elema brought in, she began to laugh. She tried not to, but little bubbles of laughter snuck out.

Her and Fayth’s conversation at the pub flashed in her mind and Dasca’s wary gaze flicked between Cort and Sharah before settling on the doctor. “Oh no, you don’t think.... she wouldn’t, would she?”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

The look on Eela’s face was Sharah’s undoing as the laughter spilled out, along with tears. “Yes, oh yes she would. And you’re going to do it too, for all the same reasons you gave me for going through with it.” She laughed some more. “It’s important that the Star Fleet contingent on Oed fully support the efforts of the colony. This does not violate or conflict with any of our duties.” Sharah couldn’t help it, she could see Eela trying to refuse and Shrine marching in here like a mythical army of one. “You said you missed living it up and being crazy once in awhile. So we’ll both get to live a little.”
