“Have to earn my keep somehow,” he bantered back. Cort shook her hand with a warm smile and he seemed to give off the energy of someone who was exceptionally easy going, but very on the ball and noticed all the details.

Eela carefully set the plant down on the other corner of her desk and watched as the leaves curled up again as she gently unwound the vines from around her shoulders.
Cort tilted his head as he studied the plant. “You know, if you want a pet, we could arrange it.”
She smirked. “This one found me, and I don’t know that pet is so much the right word. Now, fill me in so I can have the rest of my hour,” she said, gesturing the three piles of padds he had been organizing. She winked at Sharah, as if to say she’d just be a minute.

He pointed to the first one. “P1 Reading.” To the second he said, “P2.” Cort then set the rest of his padds on top of the two in pile three and gave her an apologetic look. “P1 Response in order of time sensitivity. Top six need to be done today.”

She eyed him. “I think you better just go ahead and plan to order me dinner. Zukara’s would be nice tonight.” It was either work late or she took her work home with her and she really disliked the latter and avoided it whenever she could. Though lately it was becoming untenable and at least at home she wasn’t publicly available. It was the realization that they might need to rethink how they handled a few things.

Sreer slipped into the office and handed Cort a padd, who then skimmed it and nodded. Elema slipped back out without a word. Cort waved the padd. “Before I go and leave you two to whatever you need to do, there’s a request from the hospital from Nurse Shrine to discuss you possibly volunteering some of your time with this year’s fundraiser. Should I book her in?”

Sharah had taken a seat in one of the chairs while they talked, but when Cort relayed that message Elema brought in, she began to laugh. She tried not to, but little bubbles of laughter snuck out.

Her and Fayth’s conversation at the pub flashed in her mind and Dasca’s wary gaze flicked between Cort and Sharah before settling on the doctor. “Oh no, you don’t think.... she wouldn’t, would she?”

The look on Eela’s face was Sharah’s undoing as the laughter spilled out, along with tears. “Yes, oh yes she would. And you’re going to do it too, for all the same reasons you gave me for going through with it.” She laughed some more. “It’s important that the Star Fleet contingent on Oed fully support the efforts of the colony. This does not violate or conflict with any of our duties.” Sharah couldn’t help it, she could see Eela trying to refuse and Shrine marching in here like a mythical army of one. “You said you missed living it up and being crazy once in awhile. So we’ll both get to live a little.”

Fayth, SFCMO

“What’s this?” Belanger asked, gaze darting between the two women.

Eela swallowed and drew in a deep breath. “Nurse Shrine is organizing… a bachelorette auction.”
Cort blinked. “As in…?”
She nodded. “Yes, exactly how it sounds. Doctor Fayth has been coerced into it and it looks like it’s my turn.”
He was honestly stunned and a brief snort escaped before he started laughing. But he quickly brought it under control as he became concerned, his blue eyes searching his boss intently. “Is that something you think…” He shook his head.
“I what?” Dasca said, trying to wrap her mind around the whole idea.
“Are you ready for that? No offence intended to anyone else participating but there are other… variables you may need to consider that others might not be aware of.”

Sharah was right in everything she said, but so was Cort. She reached out and touched his forearm briefly, smiling softly. “I appreciate the concern and it is something I should factor, but go ahead and tell Shrine I will meet with her. But warn her that she will have to deal with the added security conditions.”

He studied her intently before he nodded. “Of course,” Cort said, before stepping back and moving for the door, but not before smirking slightly and shaking his head as he passed Fayth.

Eela pulled out her chair and slumped into it. “You all are going to do me in, you know that right?” she said, tipping her face towards the ceiling and starting to laugh. “I mean, sure, I am single, and I’ve been technically on my own for over eighteen months, but this is not how I imagined tossing myself into the dating scene after divorce.”
