Her brows furrowed into her ridges as Eela looked upwards and tried to walk herself through her schedule. After a moment she just gave in and pulled out the padd from her workbag that she used for connecting to her schedule and messages. “One of these days I think it would be novel if I actually knew my schedule for the week without having to look at it,” she said dryly. “That is apparently not today.”

Toggling to the day after tomorrow, she skimmed the times and gave a half shake of her head. “Yes and no. I have a meeting till 1615 hours, but it’s at the Tower so it’s a very quick walk to my apartment. Let’s do 1630 and if I’m running late”-she leaned in a little-“which I hate, I’ll have Cort call ahead and let building security know. You can wait in the lobby and when I get there I’ll bring you up. Sound good?”

Massat smiled and said “Of course. I am at your disposal. Please let your security know I will be bringing some tools and various supplies with me. Nothing large, but the tool bag tends to send security staff into a state if I do not warn them.”

She laughed. “It doesn’t take much, I assure you. Not that I blame them in the least. Just be prepared for them to search it thoroughly and for you and your technician to be screened and logged in the system.” Her expression spoke volumes. It was annoying but necessary.

Reaching a hand out, she touched Karilan’s arm with her fingertips, her warm smile matching her emotions. “Thank you for your hsopitality as always. You don’t know it just yet, but something important has happened here.”

Massat laid a gentle hand on top of hers in a most Hallian manner and said “Of course I know it… friendship has begun.” and they smiled at her. “As to anything else that may have happened,-” and they cast a knowing glance at the alcove, “-perhaps someday we can speak of it over wine and good food.”

Connection. It was such a complex and nuanced concept but some days it was so damn simple: understanding exchanged through a gaze, physical contact that was genuine and meaningful, truths spoken. Eela longed for these moments, which had been seemingly so few and far between in recent years. Some of it had been her, holding back and afraid to let people in because she feared her altered brain. Some of it was the result of other events all coalescing into the demise of her marriage. But more than that it was that with a few important exceptions, she had felt invisible. Unseen. Forgotten.

But not here. Even excluding being in the public eye, she felt seen by different people in different ways and it was glorious. Her eyes shimmered, and connected by their hands as they were, what was a touch telepath supposed to do but express herself. “Thank you,” she sent. In this new life where security and the burden of her role meant few people got close enough to even be able to touch her, this moment was etching itself deep into her memory. It meant everything.

Sliding her hand back and still smiling. “I would love that.”

Massat smiled and said “As would I. You let me know when you would like to, and I will make sure that I am free. And if you ever need someone to just talk to, I offer my services.” they said with a smile. “Now… go an see to your guests. I have a new Denoublian dark roast I want you all to try. Its very flavorful.”

She grinned. “I will definitely take some to go.” Eela glanced over her shoulder. “Hey, Jones. Coffee to go?”

Dash smiled and nodded. “Definitely.”

Looking back at Massat, she beamed. “Two to go, and uh, we won’t tell my doctors just how much caffeine is fuelling my days this week. But yours is the best, so think it’s worth it.”

“Your secret is safe with me.” Massat said with a smile. They went behind the counter, made two cups, and brought them over. “Here you are. Enjoy. Mr. Jones, I hope to see you again. Lieutenant Governor, always a pleasure. PLease do have a wonderful day.”

“And you as well. I’ll see you in a couple days,” Eela said, bowing her head to them.

“Thank you,” Dashiel called over.

The pair left and walked with their coffee back to the Tower, where Eela showed him the office space. They set about gathering things he and Jeanette would need, though Eela and Cort had thought of most of it. It helped that she had spent a great deal of time in diplomatic offices and knew the general needs. But more than that it was a chance for them to get to know each other better without all the formalities. It was in this time that Dash queried Eela about some of her time in the Diplomatic Corps and in Starfleet, though he was wise to stray from the more complicated events. Eela responded openly, buoyed by the connection with Karilan and the general sense of well being she felt. It was hard to say exactly what, but something tiny had shifted and all Eela knew was that it spoke well for the future.
