She nodded slowly. “We can make it a bit more personal when we come inside too. Bits of each of our cultures. Mathis will probably have some ideas, so I will talk with her later. I have to stop by in awhile anyway,” she said, keeping the smile off her face, even if the feeling was somewhat detectable under the surface.

“One thing I wasn’t able to discern from the reports is how they handle empaths and telepaths. If they even have any experience. I myself am going to guard myself and wear gloves. Especially right now I think less input is better. But it’s something we should keep in mind.” She had had experiences in the past that were beyond unpleasant and she was sure this would be fine, but it wouldn’t do for them to be careless.

“Gloves, yes. Remember the entry about their skin and the toxins they have. We should have some poison control specialists on standby… just in case of an accident.” he said. He was quiet a moment and then said “When all of this is done… when we have these looming cultural shifts behind us… I think I may take a vacation. I haven’t been home in a very long time.” He turned and looked out the window and the sheer scope of the organized chaos that was the city. “Of course I say that like there will not be another looming crisis after this one.” and he chuckled.

Hyrushi, Governor

Eela smiled warmly at him. “You’ve been here awhile now, Kenzo, and you’ve not had the surety of having someone at your side you could depend on after Captain Parker left. But you have me now. When it’s time, go home, Kenzo. Connect. Be. Do what you need to. And you know I will have things well in hand here.” And maybe at a later date when Eela herself had been there awhile, perhaps she would finally make the trip to Halii. Or maybe not. It was much closer than Earth, but felt lightyears farther at this point in her life.

Kenzo looked at her for a long moment and then said “If I could feel comfortable leaving the colony in anyone’s hands, it would be yours.” He sighed heavily and then said “Is it too early to drink heavily?”

Hyrushi, Governor

Eela laughed. “Well, perhaps. I mean I’ve already had my day-drinking day this week already so I’m thinking I should refrain, myself.”

She gazed at him deeply. “What’s the thing that feels heaviest for you right now?”

~Eela

Kenzo though for a long moment. He was not the type to share his feelings with most anyone, but… well… he and Eela had transcended that boundary already. Several times. The thought made the corners of his mouth twitch at the humor, but he kept those thoughts to himself. “Professionally? Primarily is that few of our Directors seem to have the necessary drive to get things done. They seem to be treating this as any other job… and it most definitely is not. Personally? I am simply tired. I love this place. The people, the challenge, the opportunity to do something truly amazing. But it is wearing on me. And I have no respite… no distraction from the daily. Those are the largest weights I think.” He looked at her and gave her a knowing and sympathetic smile. “Yours are equally heavy, I know… if not more so.” He sighed. “You mourn a deep and life changing relationship. I mourn never having had one. Again we find common ground from different perspective.”

Kenzo

Eela gave him a rueful smile and nodded. “Professionally I think all we can do is provide an example to the cabinet about what the work demands and what can be accomplished when we rise to that challenge. And on an individual basis we can poke and prod a little to find out where extra support might be needed.”

Resting her arm on the desk and leaning forward, she smiled at him. “Personally… let me say this: you are an extraordinary person worth knowing, Kenzo. And our work makes letting others know us even more difficult than it might otherwise. We must manage expectations and also protect the work from those that would try to manipulate it for their own ends. It’s a juggling act that few around us fully understand. That being said, and you can take or leave this as you will, but, in my very recent and profound experience, if I don’t put myself in a position to meet people in the first place, it’s very hard to establish connections that can become anything deeper,” Eela said, her gaze deep and understanding.

~Eela

Kenzo chuckled and said “As Ms. Fen is so adamant about pointing out, I do not lack in opportunity. The problem isn’t a matter of quantity… but of quality. I am not one to approach such matters as one may approach a buffet, sampling this and that to satiate an appetite. I am more inclined towards… fine dining.” and he smiled softly at her. “I take such pursuits seriously, not as a pastime.”
