That actually seemed to perk Jason up some. “Now that is bitha very logical concern… and also one I an uniquely equipped to handle. Now… with your approval and consent of course… I can change things so it would appear you never had anything to do with him. Hell, I can even change your whole name and personnel record if you wanted me to. But that could be a bit much right now. I can edit and modify all of his records, files, personal logs… anything. As far as anyone doing a search could find, you two would have never even met.i can even steer inquires away from the Saracen so they can’t ask anyone about the two of you. If that’s what you want, anyway.”

Jason

Remove their connection? Hannah could see the need for it, the practicality of it. She knew what Daniel had done was dangerous. If it was her, just her, well that was her decision and her life, but it wasn’t just her anymore was it? But change her name? Who she was, where she came from, her service history? What about her parents? Her colony? What about Alexis? She’d be beside herself (in a very Alexis like way). Lt Mika knew about her and Daniel. She knew about the baby and Daniel disappearing. This was…overwhelming. “I....I don’t know.” She looked around the room that suddenly felt very small. “Can we discuss this somewhere else? Anywhere else.”

“Of course.” Jason said and he waited till she was ready and followed her out.

As they left Ok’jiv stopped them to give Hannah a small PaDD. “Call if you need anything.” Hannah nodded, “Thank you, Ok’jiv. Also, what Jason asked you for, it’s fine. We discussed it, it’s okay with me.” Ok’jiv nodded, “Of course.” She nodded to them both and stepped into another room with another patient. Hannah led the way out of the hospital, slipping the PaDD into her pocket.

Hannah

Hungry? Jason signed. Or just walk and talk?

Jason

A smile touched her lips, but didn’t quite make her eyes. I am hungry. Besides, I think if I don’t eat, you and O-k-j-i-v will gang up on me. Walking and talking sounds good too. Maybe we find a new place to eat at the same time? The Ginger Man did have good food, but Hannah needed some distance from all the obvious baby oriented things. I… she turned towards him as they walked, I think I need a minute to let everything sit and turn over. It’s just so much.

Hannah

Jason smiled and said OK. I know you are more comfortable with your implants off. If you like, you can turn them off and we can just walk and you can process. He took her hand in his and pulled her close to him. And I will be right here when you want to talk. and he leaned in and kissed her for a long, long moment filled with promise and hope.

Jason

Hannah looked up at him, warmth flooding her as he pulled close. She held onto his hand, her other slipping around him and resting against his back. It took that long, long moment that he kissed her, but finally the painful knot in her gut eased as his promise and hope filled her. Hannah kissed him back, it was filled with trust and belonging. Life continued and moved passed them as they stood there. Here everything made sense. Hannah didn’t care how or why, just that it was.

When the kiss ended she reached up and took off her implants. She couldn’t remember the last time she had spent this much time without them. Jason was right, she was more comfortable without them, but they were a necessary inconvenience that she had learned to accept. Then she did something she had never done before - she took his hand and place the two disks in his palm and closed his fingers around them. Hannah had a pocket to hold them in, but this was more than that. Her earlier hurt feelings and whatever his good intentions and her outburst could be called, was over. She trusted him anyway, they both apologized and she knew he hadn’t meant to hurt her, just take cate of her.

She laced her fingers in his other hand and started walking. She was deep in thought. It was overwhelming, but it wasn’t as bad as a few days ago because she wasn’t alone. But there were decisions she had to make, and she really couldn’t put them off. After a few blocks she passed and tapped her nose. Pizza?

Hannah*

Only if you are not one of those w-e-i-r-d-o-s who puts fruit on pizza. and he made a comical disgusted face and then smiled. Her olfactory sense was amazing, the pizza place was over a block away. But they found it and walked in. It was a nice place, comfortable, and had table service. They were seated in a booth near the back, and Jason sat opposite her. Next time we go out, I want to sit next to you. But signing sideways is a bit tricky. and he laughed.

Jason

His expression made her laugh and then cover her mouth with her other hand. Do olives count as fruit? The pizzeria used an old fashioned brick oven, which explained how Hannah had gotten a wiff of pizza, out of the chimney. Hannah looked at him from across the table and nodded slightly. He wasn’t wrong. She also didn’t need a second invitation. She got up and moved to sit beside him. “Then we won’t sign.” She looked at the menu and then looked at him, “Share or just order by the slice?”

Hannah

He took out her aids and held them out to her and said “I love you, Hannah.” It was the first time he had said the words truly, and he looked directly at her as he did. “And I cannot wait for forever with you.” His words were the most sincere ones he had ever spoken, and even though he knew in his head that it was safe to say it… he was still half-expecting her to bolt out the door.

Jason

Hannah took the aids and slipped them on, combing her hair slightly out of the way and then letting it fall. She felt nervous, nerve endings firing all at once, “I love you, too.” She kissed him and then laid her head against his shoulder, her far hand holding his, her near hand tucked into his elbow, kind of hugging his arm. “I can wait. I don’t want to rush, I don’t want to miss any moment.”

Hannah

“We won’t. Never again. Now… shall we see if our tastes in pizza align? Or are we doomed to fail?” he asked with a playful grin and a small laugh. “I am a big fan of heat, but I won’t mandate that. I want you to choose what we have… or rather, you two choose. I’ll eat whatever you want.” and he kissed her cheek. “As long as we share everything.”

Jason

A grin crossed her lips briefly. “I like bbq chicken, but I don’t mind heat in other things. The idea doesn’t make my stomach cramp, and I have yet to have heartburn, ever, so…” Hannah scanned the menu, “What about this one.” She pointed to it, chilli powder sauce, pepperoni, spicy beef, spicy green chilies, and black olives, mozzarella cheese and a choice of flavored crust.

Hannah

Jason looked and said “Okay, but only if we can share a milkshake as well.” The waiter came over and Jason ordered for them, looking at Hannah and saying “What flavor milkshake?”

“Mist root.” Hannah grinned. Mist root was nasty and even with strange cravings she doubted she would want that. “No, really, peach milkshake.”

After they ordered, he put his arm around her and said “Tell you what… I know things seem really up in the air right now, so lets do this. After every appointment, every time we go to the doctor or whomever together… afterwards we come right back here, we eat that pizza we just ordered (if its good, of course)… and we sit right here next to each other. Every time. Deal?”

Jason

Hannah shifted closer into his side and let out a slow breath. It felt good to be there with him like that. “I like that.” She turned her head to look at him, “Deal. You know we are probably going to be sick of pizza and milkshakes.” The waitress came back with two large ice waters and the largest milkshake glass ever, along with the metal cup it was mixed in that was still half full, with two straws. “Pizza will be out soon.”

She put her head back against his shoulder. After a moment she sighed. “I have to find a way to terminate his rights.” She was conflicted about not letting Daniel have any right to his own child. She had loved him, they had been happy together, but he had chosen to leave her. Even before she met Jason she knew she needed to do it. Protect the baby from anyone who might come looking for Daniel or try to use either of them. “But I don’t know how to do that without…putting it out there where maybe it shouldn’t be. I don’t know…maybe I am over thinking it because I’m worried?”

Hannah

Jason was quiet a moment. This… problems like this one… had for years been his stock-in-trade. He stared at the milkshake for a moment and then looked at her. “What if…” and he took a deep breath, “… what if it could be as if he never was the father? What if by any test ran anywhere in the Federation, the results showed the child is yours… and mine?”

Jason

Hannah lifted her head and gave him a curious look. “How? Like genetic manipulation? Or?” Hannah wasn’t a geneticist but she knew enough that attempting to replace the baby’s DNA was deadly. She wasn’t going to jump to conclusions though. If Jason had a possible answer she wanted to hear it.

Hannah

“Gods no. That only worked twice in all the times anyone has tried it. No no… I mean. I can reprogram the baby’s medical file. See, there are a lot of advantages to the level of interconnectedness of the galaxy we live in. Faster information retrieval and collating of data, for instance. But one thing most people don’t realize is that that there are some circumstances, if you know about them far enough in advance, that one can… well… manipulate that interconnectedness to achieve a particular goal. In this case, I simply rewrite a line or two of code in the baby’s file as its created. The very first file. That then gets uploaded to the Federation database, so every time that file is sent somewhere, those changed lines go with it. So from birth, through school, through every medical checkup throughout their lives, the record would show that the baby is yours and mine… genetically. Unless someone takes my DNA and compares it specifically… there will never be anyway of anyone saying it isn’t mine. So if he does come back… he would think you and I had a baby. “

Jason

That sounded simple. Maybe too simple. Sometimes the simplest answers were the best though. “What if he does demand a DNA test though? Or anyone else? People already know it’s his.” Well three. Ok’jiv, Mika because she’d talked to her about it during her counseling evaluation, and Alexis. Alexis would go along with what she wanted. The other two…well Mika wouldn’t talk about her private sessions but…Hannah picked up her water and drank some of it. “If Daniel came back, in passing he may look, see who the parents are, but he’s trained to notice things. But if he decides to look further he would demand a test…” She honestly didn’t know if Daniel would understand or turn ugly about it. Either way he would demand access to his child. But Jason’s idea solved many problems. Hannah nodded leaning back against him. “Do it.”

Hannah

He nodded and said “Consider it done. And as far as those that know, talk to them. Explain the situation. See if they will see reason. Daniel was a dangerous man. You want to keep you and the baby safe. I’m sure they will understand.”

Jason

Hannah nodded, “They will.” At least she knew Alexis would. She wasn’t sure she would understand the social complexities and intrigue they were playing at. Alexis’ mind didn’t work like that, but she would keep Hannah’s secret. Mika was easier. She knew Daniel and the things he did, to an extent.

The arrival of the pizza precluded further discussion. It smelled of fresh backed dough warm cheese and heat. Hannah grinned as the waitress set the pizza tray on a stand and set two plates on the table. “Enjoy and let me know if you need anything.” Hannah pulled a slice off, cheese stretching into long thin strands u til they broke, and set it on his plate and then she did the same for herself. “Alright,” she set the milkshake between their plates, in easy reach, and eyes the food. It smelled really good. The baby better not ruin this for her. “Ready?” she grinned at him and took a bite.

Hannah

He looked at her and smiled. “I’ve never been more ready.” It was obvious he wasn’t talking about pizza.

Hannah’s face turned red, but not from the heat of the pizza. She leaned in and kissed his cheek before he could take a bite.

He took a bite, and the cheese and meat and heat hit him and he grinned as he chewed. “Yes. This. Every single time.” he said around the mouth-watering bite.

Jason

Hannah nodded. “MmmHmmm.” The sauce was the most surprising out of the whole thing. It was very good. Tasted more home made than just chili powder added to a basic pizza sauce. Hannah’s appetite had returned after the infusion of fluids. She made it through two of the large New York style slices before she paused to ease the heat with the milkshake. Peach milkshake with spicy pizza was not a decent combination. Vanilla would be better or something citrus flavored. Hannah on the other hand thought it was amazing. “This. This is my go to weird craving. Spicy pizza and peach milkshake. Oh…and sushi after.” She smiled but it was mostly superficial, but at least not all fake now. She wanted to be excited, to embrace being pregnant. She always thought she would. She was just very worried about too much.

Jason smiled at her and said “Whatever my lady wants, my lady gets.”

She picked up the water and drank a large portion. Not that she was overly thirsty, but she had to start the habit of drinking a lot more water, so she didn’t get dehydrated again.

Hannah

He tried the milkshake and it was good, but the sweet was too much for him. But he didn’t say anything to Hannah; letting her enjoy the moment uninterrupted.

After they had eaten their fill, he looked at her and said “Ok, serious question. If… when… I make that record change, we have to explain the timing to our families. What do you want to say?”

Jason, ever planning

Hannah shrugged with a small sigh. “I don’t know. The fewer people who know the record has been changed the better, I guess.” She didn’t like the idea of lying to her parents. She hadn’t the first time Jason mentioned it, and she still didn’t. It seemed inevitable though. A couple of weeks difference would be believable over a couple of months. “We could tell them the truth, or lie. Say we met on the Saracen. After they came for Daniel’s things and a new XO was requested. We could say I was mourning and lonely. One thing led to another?”

Hannah

Jason nodded as he thought. “Yes, that could work. Another way would be we met before, when you and Daniel were separated. There were feelings, but the timing was off. After he left this time, a chance encounter led to where we are now. Either way has its own eloquence.” He looked at her and said “I know the idea of lying is hard. But sometimes it’s necessary. Especially to protect someone from unwanted outside interests.”
