Eraras knocked and entered a moment after. “Hello Eela! How are today? Comfortable? Do you want another pillow?” The bubbly Bolian came in at full speed. “I have your results. I am very pleased.”

Eela carefully rolled onto her side so she could face him more easily. “No I’m fine,” she said, gazing at him and eager for the good news.

“There is improvement from the disc compression you arrived with. But I would guess you have been sitting a lot. Did they ever bring your standing desk? You see here stress in the soft tissues in and around the fusion area. I see Jal’na corrected the brace again, I’m sure it’ll keep healing. You are still at 95% functionality in terms of your nerves and overall use. I don’t see that getting better, even with work. Not as things stand, but I do want to discuss something with you.”

Eraras

She was well used to his flurry of words and Eela took the necessary time to parse them. “Oh? And what’s that?” she said, pushing herself to a seated position, sensing that this was conversation that required a more serious countenance.

“Well we have a new doctor on staff. I am very excited to work with her. She has made quite the reputation for herself, and well deserved. She is a prosthetic specialist. Dr Hannah Asimina. She’s a lieutenant in Star Fleet. I understand she has come in as the assistant CMO under Dr. Fayth. I would like to consult with her about your back. See if there is anything she might recommend.”

Eraras

Eela was aware of the appointment of Asimina, though mostly as a ‘we have an assistant for Fayth, finally’ sort of thing. As much as she would love to be able to put a name and face to every person assigned here, it would never happen. It had been a feat even on the Steadfast- the Sovereign-class ship holding a crew complement of 855- but here on Oed? Not a chance with over twenty times the personnel.

She frowned slightly. “I’m not sure what else there is to do about it, but if you feel bringing her into the mix is warranted, I’m not opposed.”

Eraras shrugged, “There may be nothing, but…and I preface that ‘but’ with you have dine remarkable work improving your back, but there may come a time where you can’t improve it and the damage simply degrades. I would like to explore options now rather than wait till the disks and fused bones are beyond that point.”

Eraras

Reality. It was a heavy thing lately and a part of her had known that there was always this possibility. She knew that if the fusion failed, they’d have to do surgery again, in some form. But if she had further damage, the risk of more nerve damage was higher and that would complicate any other treatment option.

“So would I.” Dasca exhaled aloud. “Okay, let’s bring in Doctor Asimina.”

“Excellent. I will meet with her and have her review your file and then we will schedule a follow up appointment with her. In the mean time I am sending orthopedics out to set you up with a standing desk. All very ‘high tech’ of course. It will raise and lower with a push of a button. That way you don’t have to move all your things and you don’t sit as much. I can arrange for you to have a similar one at home if you like?”

Aesthetics in her home were rather important to her as she cultivated a sanctuary for herself on this colony. Did she mind a high tech desk? No. Would it fit? Maybe not. Still, given her issues, and how long her work days were, changing up her work setting could help. “I know the desks are matter of health and practicality, but appearance make a difference in my surroundings. If there’s any way to customize the structure of it, that would fit my space better. I just went through a bunch of renovations on my office. Something in wood, or at least simulated to look like it, would be better.”

“Contine your physical therapy and massage therapy. Jal’na will let me know when she feels you no longer need her services. How are your medications working for you?”

Eraras

Eela nodded. “The larger dose of terakine less frequently is working out fine. There’s been a lot more anti-inflammatories the last few days, but as you said earlier, it’s all healing. I don’t use the muscle relaxant Dr. Fayth gave me very often but it does help on the days when I’ve not been able to rest as much. The residual pain that isn’t always dealt with, I just live with. It’s minor.” It was telling for her that she hadn’t needed her cane in recent weeks. She kept it handy still, but was growing more confident she wouldn’t need it.
