Eela laughed as well, her hands still warm from the contact. “Just be your usual dapper self. It’s not a black-tie affair- we’re saving that for the Vren. But if you need suggestions or reassurance, call me tomorrow and show me what you’re thinking of.”

“Come over on your lunch break, if you get one. Or for dinner. You can help me go through my closests.” they said.

She beamed. “Even better. See? We’re doing each other a favour. I’ll come help you find an outfit and you’ll get me out of the office, which will get Cort off my back. That man is such a mother hen and I’m an actual mother of the two of us,” Eela said, not the least bit miffed. She adored Cort, as anyone could tell, especially empaths. “I don’t think I’ll get a lunch tomorrow, but I can probably swing dinner before I go home to work some more.” She was taking a lighter day today because she had the showcase tonight with Dash. This time with Karilan today kept her anxiety at bay a great deal.

“Though I will say, I’ve never complained about an opportunity to dress up and the gown I have for the gala is…” She shook her head. “I have never felt so beautiful and powerful in the same moment. I know clothing can portray many things and help us express that, but it’s pretty extraordinary for a swath of fabric.”

~Eela

“Ball gowns, dresses… they are armor for a different kind of war. And promise me. You absolutely must send me pictures from the gala. Please?” and they were silent a moment and then said “The Vren… have you seen them? Spoke to them What? What are they like?”

Karilan

“You have my promise,” Eela said with a light in her eyes. “And yes, I’ve seen on screen and spoken with their Ambassador.” Eela smiled warmly. “It’s hard to know about a species from one individual but the Ambassador has an infectious enthusiasm. Like life in general just excites him. It’s delightful! They’re amphibious. Bipedal frogs, essentially. It was hard to tell from the high level recoding of the ritual from the press conference Hyrushi and Mathis gave, but those rituals are very important to them. It was something both the Governor and I could each appreciate on a personal level. So… I’m optimistic. But again, one person, even a representative of a whole doesn’t show you the whole story. There’s a whole section of the population that isn’t keen on this outward path forward, and even some that could pose a problem, even though their society is on the brink of death.” She blew out a breath. “And then you add the understandable fear from people here and that is the task before myself, Hyrushi and Ambassador Mathis.” She lifted her glass. “Tell me you want my job,” Eela remarked before drinking her kava juice.

~Eela

Karilan smiled at her and they said “I get to run my hands over centuries-old manuscripts, read words not seen in decades or centuries, laugh and cry with some of the most incredible minds to ever put word to paper.” and they smirked. “Tell me you want my job. Because I know you do.” and they laughed.

“Tempting!” she said, laughing as well. “I’ll just have to settle for my visits and my little work nook.” Eela still thought of it as hers, eve though it wasn’t and she had no doubt others used it. It was just like this little not-so-secret secret place she had and it made her smile. “And maybe at some point if I’ve had enough of working in government, I’ll come work for you and be your shop assistant.

“Well, the shop is open to the Vren if they want to research any cultures or societies customs and whatnot. All I ask is a meeting with one of their engineers. I would love to talk principles and practices with a new species.”

Karilan

Eela nodded. “I can arrange that pretty easily. I have no idea what things will look like after the gala yet, but I think we’re going to put together a tentative plan for a tour of colony. Right now, we’re just trying to get them into the system and docked without a riot.”

“I can only imagine. I do not envy you, my friend.” they said softly.

Their meals arrived and it turned out her dish looked a bit like a stir fry with some sort of short noodle.

~Eela

Karilan had a bread bowl of the soup. They looked at Eela’s dish and said “If you want to trade, we can. But I promise… it tastes splendid.” They took a bite of the soup and nodded slightly in appreciation. “So. You and Mr. Jones have your ‘event’. Then you have the Vren. So I am guessing your schedule is looking quite daunting for the next while, doesn’t it? I hope you remember to take time for yourself.” and they snickered. “I’m sure Mr. Jones hopes you do as well.”
