Eela laughed. “I’m hoping Alais isn’t quite crawling yet, because I’m not sure I can keep up with her as easily, but we’ll see. Everything Caridee tells me though indicates she loves people and all the attention, so I think she’ll be quite happy with all the new people around.”

She was nursing her drink carefully and leaned back in her chair, tipping her eyes up to the sky. All over the colony people were going about their lives as they always did, and out amongst the stars, trillions of beings were living and dying in a cycle of renewal as old as the universe itself. There was comfort in that. “I know it’s been a whole lot of chaos, but thank you for taking me in. I’ll head home in the morning, and once I cleanse the place I’ll figure out how I want to go from there.” Eela took them all in in turn. “Until I wrote it down a little earlier I don’t think I realized how tiny my life was before I came to Oed. How much I’ve craved connecting with people again. I didn’t expect to find that here, with all of you, but I’m so incredibly grateful for it.”

Charles grinned and began playing, bouncing his foot to the beat…

Well, we grew up down by the railroad tracks, shootin’ BBs at old beer cans
Chokin’ on the smoke from a Lucky Strike somebody lifted off his old man
We were football flunkies, southern rock junkies, crankin’ up the stereos
Singing loud and proud to “Gimmie Three Steps, “ “Simple Man, ” and “Curtis Low”
We were big, ya know

Got some discount knowledge at the Jr. College where we majored in beer and girls
It was all real funny till we ran out of money and they threw us out into the world
Yeah, the kids that thought they’d run this town ain’t a-runnin’ much of anything
Just lovin’ and laughin’ and bustin’ our asses, and we all call it all livin’ the dream

But these are my people, this is where I come from
We’re givin’ this life everything we got and then some
It ain’t always pretty, but it’s real
It’s the way we were made, wouldn’t have it any other way

These are my people

Well, we take it all week on the chin with a grin till we make it to Friday night
And it’s church league softball, holler ‘bout a bad call, preacher breaking up the fight
Then later on at the Green Light tavern, well, everybody’s gatherin’ as friends
And the beer’s a pourin’ till Monday mornin’, and we start it all over again

And these are my people, this is where I come from
We’re givin’ this life everything we got and then some
It ain’t always pretty, but it’s real
It’s the way we were made, wouldn’t have it any other way

These are my people
We fall down, and we get up
We walk proud, and we talk tough
We got heart, and we got nerve
Even if we are a bit disturbed
Woo, come on

These are my people, this is where I come from
We’re givin’ this life everything we got and then some
It ain’t always pretty, but it’s real
It’s the way we were made, wouldn’t have it any other way, ah naw

These are my people, yeah, woo

Yavia had her head back staring up at the stars, her foot waving to the beat. He had a large library of music to choose from and always seemed to know what was needed. Yavia could sit there and listen for hours. She was taking a sip of her drink when TK sang, “Even if we are a bit disturbed,” and she spit her drink out she laughed so hard. Sharah sat up and grabbed her drink from her and patted her back. “We all jnjw you ate disturbed, Yavia. It’s no secret.” She got up and went up a level to grab a towel. Yavia coughed, laughed, and coughed again. “Yeah well you are both with me, what does that say about you?”

Yavia

“Group delusion?” Eela deadpanned before smirking and sipping her drink, watching to make sure Yavia was really okay, but she seemed like she would be fine. She had been tapping her fingers on her thigh and swaying in her seat to the beat, soaking in the lyrics and the beat.

“It ain’t always pretty, but it’s real…” That’s the line that pretty much sums up my life,” she said with a smile, taking another sip.
