Eela nodded. “I can arrange that pretty easily. I have no idea what things will look like after the gala yet, but I think we’re going to put together a tentative plan for a tour of colony. Right now, we’re just trying to get them into the system and docked without a riot.”

“I can only imagine. I do not envy you, my friend.” they said softly.

“On the days that make me want to beat my head on my desk, I happily send my friend Roger a message. Usually something succinct like, ‘I hate you today’, and carry on.” She grinned. “Roger is the one who nominated me.”

Their meals arrived and it turned out her dish looked a bit like a stir fry with some sort of short noodle.

Karilan had a bread bowl of the soup. They looked at Eela’s dish and said “If you want to trade, we can. But I promise… it tastes splendid.” They took a bite of the soup and nodded slightly in appreciation. “So. You and Mr. Jones have your ‘event’. Then you have the Vren. So I am guessing your schedule is looking quite daunting for the next while, doesn’t it? I hope you remember to take time for yourself.” and they snickered. “I’m sure Mr. Jones hopes you do as well.”

Fork poised above her plate, Eela laughed. “Oh, well, here’s the thing about people in the diplomatic world… things are so variable that you take your moments when you get them. So we both know what this situation is like. Though I do foresee more morning coffee runs together. I think I’ve got him hooked on your coffee Karilan and I’m not the least bit apologetic,” she said with a grin.

As she delved into her dish, the complex mix of flavours hit her palate and surprise swept across her face. “Oh wow, unexpected and rather intriguing. I think I like it.”

“So besides helping busy people with their books and an impending dinner with the Governor, anything else going on for you?” she asked.

~Eela

Karilan shrugged and said “No, not really. I was thinking about going to the museum in a few days. And I am starting a book club, all virtual so schedules can be adjusted to. Other than that? My life is pretty boring.”

Karilan

“A book club sounds great! I’d join it but then I’d be that person who never gets to reading the book on time,” Eela said with a grin.

She finished another bite of her dish and eyed Karilan. “Two things though. One, the museum is the site of the gala, so sneak in there before they cordon it off for security preparations, and two, a quiet life does not equate a boring life. Besides, you’ve let me into your life so you’re stuck with me now, and while my schedule is busy I always make time for my friends. They just need to be patient with interruptions and unexpectedly changing plans.” She was’t sure Karilan would always appreciate the ‘interesting’ components she was likely to bring into their life, but they wouldn’t be lacking in topics of conversation, that was for sure!

~Eela

Karilan smiled a half-smile and said “After the gala. The place is already half closed down for preparations.” and they took a drink. “And I know quiet and boring aren’t the same… and I do like quiet. I just.. I don’t know, Eela. I feel…” and they paused for a long moment staring at their soup. They looked up and said “I feel like for so long I have been content to just sit back and observe life. And now, and I am completely laying the blame for this at your feet-” and they grinned, “- I feel like I am missing out on… on… on EVERYTHING. And it is just making me feel a little… smaller… than I even felt before.”
