Yavia had her head back staring up at the stars, her foot waving to the beat. He had a large library of music to choose from and always seemed to know what was needed. Yavia could sit there and listen for hours. She was taking a sip of her drink when TK sang, “Even if we are a bit disturbed,” and she spit her drink out she laughed so hard. Sharah sat up and grabbed her drink from her and patted her back. “We all jnjw you ate disturbed, Yavia. It’s no secret.” She got up and went up a level to grab a towel. Yavia coughed, laughed, and coughed again. “Yeah well you are both with me, what does that say about you?”

Yavia

TK laughed and shook his head. “It says we’re gluttony for punishment… or maybe we know something most folks don’t.” and he winked and pointed his beer bottle at her before taking a drink.

Sharah sat back down and handed Yavia the towel. She grinned at Charles. They were happily crazy, weird, and comfortable together. “I warned you when you asked me if you should ask her out.” Yavia glanced from one to the other with this surprised suspicious look that made Sharah chuckle. “Oh yes he did. Over coffee and got chocolate in the conference room, after we bemoaned the total lack of professionalism in HHI security for the security wing. Why do you think he was shouting across the wing to you?”

Yavia eyed her, “You set me up.”

“She set us BOTH up!” Charles said with a laugh.

“Yes, yes I did. You two are perfect for each other.” Sharah grinned and grabbed Yavia’s drink and handed it to her. “Finish before it melts.”

“Group delusion?” Eela deadpanned before smirking and sipping her drink, watching to make sure Yavia was really okay, but she seemed like she would be fine. She had been tapping her fingers on her thigh and swaying in her seat to the beat, soaking in the lyrics and the beat.

“It ain’t always pretty, but it’s real…” That’s the line that pretty much sums up my life,” she said with a smile, taking another sip.

Sharah nodded with a deeper broader understanding than most, “Sums up most people’s lives at one point or another. None of us escape it, and we all approach it differently. But that’s the notes of all the different pieces blending together.” She glanced silently at Yavia and shook her head and gave the other woman a look. Sharah put her arm around her as Yavia leaned against her.

Charles smiled at his girlfriends. “Yep. But there is always that karma thing, too. I guess thats what led Sharah to us that day, V. Karma for her settin’ us up.” He strummed and looked at the strings of the guitar as he picked. “Need ta find ‘ol Lady Karma, I think… I owe her big time for all this.” and he looked up and smiled.

Eela smiled as they chatted and sipped on her drink, tucking away the unease that the idea of karma brought up. But as with all things, they existed in balance. Had her own actions and inactions precipitated what went down in her apartment? Yes. Any number of alterations could have changed the outcome, for better or worse, and she could admit that without assigning blame to herself for any of it. But in the same breath she could also say that her willingness and desire to find connection on Oed and be open to people allowed her to have this support network. She knew herself well enough to know that had she not been in a position in her life where there were guards outside her door, and had Cory even left on his own accord when she demanded he did so, Eela would probably have kept the incident to herself. Out of embarrassment, shame and confusion. And if she hadn’t had friends around her who would have known that something was wrong, Eela would have suffered on her own and who knows how that would have unfolded.

Gazing up at the stars, an old song came to mind that one of the crew on the Leeds had sang to everyone hunkered down in one of the refuge areas of the ship. It had stuck with her enough that later she had looked it up and learned the lyrics. It felt appropriate too in this moment, though the battle was vastly different. Internal wars always were. This is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far. As the warm kept the evening chill off her skin, Eela knew that one thing was for damn certain: she was changed. Again. And that was okay. Well… it would be.
