Karilan looked at himself in the mirror and then turned and grabbed Eela by the waist and kissed her. It was most definitely not platonic, but then they threw their head back and laughed. “Oh by all the gods above so this is what free feels like!” they shouted and then then looked at Eela, their hands still on her waist. “You… you did this to me. And I cannot ever… ever… thank you enough. You are my best and most dearest friend, Eela Dasca… and I love and adore you.” They kissed her cheek and let her go and grabbed more clothes and went into the bedroom and became a tornado of clothes and color. After three minutes, the look was settled. The gray pants, black boots with a decent heel. The t-shirt. The red jacket. And the sunglasses. Male or female… feminine or masculine… it no longer mattered.

All of it was just Karilan.

Karilan Massat, Genius Engineer / Entrepreneur / Clothes Horse / Whole Being

Eela couldn’t have wiped the beaming smile off her face if she tried. The fact that she had been kissed more than once didn’t even faze her and she could still gaze at Karilan and feel that deep regard in return. She brought her hands up to their waist. “I love you too my dear friend.” Her emotions and thoughts were all swirling around the same vein: I see you and it is so beautiful.

“And the Governor has no idea how lucky he is to have such a fantastic dinner companion,” she said with a wink.

~Eela

Karilan stepped up to her and moved the sunglasses up to see her eyes directly. “Promise me that once all of the Mr. Jones slash Vren slash family stuff is over with… promise me that you and I can spend a weekend by ourselves and just shop for clothes and drink wine and talk. I have never had a proper best friend before, and I really want to do that.”

Karilan

Her eyes lit up. “Oh, you have no idea how lovely that sounds! It actually might be possible since I tend to take Saturdays off. Sunday can sometimes be a prep day, but if I plan ahead and tell everyone else to go away, I might be able to get away with it. Just…” Eela’s eyes shifted into worry. “There’s just so much that is unpredictable about work that I don’t want you to be disappointed if I can’t make it work entirely the way we hope. But I will try.”

Karilan smiled and said “Eela… I doubt you could ever disappoint me. And I am fully aware of the fact that you are beholden to far more important things than my social life. Don’t you ever worry about that.” and they smiled.

“Also, just so you know… my seeing Dashiel Jones socially doesn’t preclude me from spending time with others. He’ll just have to learn to share,” she said with a grin.

~Eela

Karilan’s eyes flashed with a wicked gleam and they grinned. “He damn well better. Because stable or not, I get Eela time.” and they laughed loudly and genuinely.

Karilan

She laughed as well. “That you do.” For a moment Eela just gazed at Karilan with a deep and almost mystified expression. “Just so you know, it’s been a long time since I’ve had this,” she said gesturing between them. “My entire career I was the only Haliian on my postings. I was fortunate to not be the only empath or telepath, but even then there were few who fully understand my need for openness in my relationships. And it on occasion caused issues as I navigated all those mores. Even now it’s hard to explain just how much I appreciate that you get it, that I don’t have to explain how I am to you. I got used to it being married to a Human, but I tell you, the freedom I’m feeling right now is one I haven’t felt in a very, very long time, if truly ever.”

~Eela

Karilan stepped up to her and took her hands in theirs. The gray from prior was gone. Now there was just warm, bone-deep light and warmth. “I am glad that I can help you. And know this. I am your friend. And that means more to me than any label or box people feel the need to put this-” and they mirrored the gesture Eela had made, “- in. And whatever you need… I am here for it. And for you.”

Karilan

Eela squeezed their hands and then pulled Karilan into a deep embrace, breathing deeply. No words, no explanation needed.

Karilan held her back, leaning into the embrace both physically and on levels only the two of them together could reach.

When she let go, Eela looked over at the pile of clothes. “How much of that are you going to keep?” She had no doubt it would be a process of unfolding and she for one was looking forward to seeing the beautiful evolution of Karilan Massat.

~Eela

Karilan eyed the pile and a gleam came into their eyes. “Oh, I have plans for that I think. I’ll donate a good portion, I think. I know we have a lot of refugees coming in and clothes for job interviews are not standard for relief packages. But I think I am going to start working on showing me off. Clothes are where I will start.” and they glanced at Eela and grinned. “And that is why we have to go shopping.”
