She laughed as well. “That you do.” For a moment Eela just gazed at Karilan with a deep and almost mystified expression. “Just so you know, it’s been a long time since I’ve had this,” she said gesturing between them. “My entire career I was the only Haliian on my postings. I was fortunate to not be the only empath or telepath, but even then there were few who fully understand my need for openness in my relationships. And it on occasion caused issues as I navigated all those mores. Even now it’s hard to explain just how much I appreciate that you get it, that I don’t have to explain how I am to you. I got used to it being married to a Human, but I tell you, the freedom I’m feeling right now is one I haven’t felt in a very, very long time, if truly ever.”

~Eela

Karilan stepped up to her and took her hands in theirs. The gray from prior was gone. Now there was just warm, bone-deep light and warmth. “I am glad that I can help you. And know this. I am your friend. And that means more to me than any label or box people feel the need to put this-” and they mirrored the gesture Eela had made, “- in. And whatever you need… I am here for it. And for you.”

Karilan

Eela squeezed their hands and then pulled Karilan into a deep embrace, breathing deeply. No words, no explanation needed.

Karilan held her back, leaning into the embrace both physically and on levels only the two of them together could reach.

When she let go, Eela looked over at the pile of clothes. “How much of that are you going to keep?” She had no doubt it would be a process of unfolding and she for one was looking forward to seeing the beautiful evolution of Karilan Massat.

~Eela

Karilan eyed the pile and a gleam came into their eyes. “Oh, I have plans for that I think. I’ll donate a good portion, I think. I know we have a lot of refugees coming in and clothes for job interviews are not standard for relief packages. But I think I am going to start working on showing me off. Clothes are where I will start.” and they glanced at Eela and grinned. “And that is why we have to go shopping.”

Karilan

“Well, as it happens, I love picking out clothes,” Eela said. “The nice thing about not being in uniform day in and day out is that I have a reason to actually have a larger wardrobe of clothing. Not that I ever minded the uniforms. Blue and red are my colours after all,” she added with a grin.

“Oh! I’ve been meaning to ask you something as well.” She held up her hands. “Now, you are allowed to say no, because everyone’s comfort level with big parties is different. But… the Haliian holiday my daughter and her family are arriving for soon is coming up and First Day always includes a gathering of friends and family for a meal, and I would love to share this piece of my culture with you. It’s usually quite the event.”

~Eela

Karilan grinned at her and slid down the sunglasses and straight-up posed. “I don’t know, Eela… is there a dress code?” and then they laughed clearly and loudly. “Of course! I would love to come. Tell me what I need to bring and I will be there, absolutely.”

Karilan

She laughed as well and reached out tapping the sunglasses. “What have I done?” she said, grinning. “The dress code is festive and whatever makes you happy and comfortable.”

“And you know, typically the host does all the cooking, and there are definitely dishes Caridee and I are going to make, but I’m really thinking I might have everyone bring a dish that is important to them in some way and we’ll do the whole thing potluck style. Seems a good adjustment to honour the varied people in my life.”

~Eela

“Done. And I know what I will make. It was Aunt’s favorite dish. You let me know when and I will be there.” They cocked their head slightly to the side and really looked at Eela for a long moment.

“I’m really happy you are finally home, Eela.” and they smiled and then started sorting clothes.
