And here she was. Halai’s younger sister giving him goosebumps perhaps unintentionally. He grinned as he took a slow bite. He gave her a wink and replied, “No that would be you.” He gave her a slight wink as he lightly laughed.

He then leaned back and changed the subject. “So, what brings you back here to the Black Sparrow?” he asked with amused curiosity.

Carving more of the ice cream with her spoon, Kristina eyed Michael intently. This was more than his similar question when she first arrived. This felt like a personal inquiry. “What? Can’t a gal be curious?” she said before pulling more ice cream off her spoon.

Michael gave an amused chuckle, his eyes not leaving her gaze as he took another methodical helping of ice cream. “Oh there’s nothing wrong with that. I enjoy leaping at the opportunity to be curious about something. After all, you never really know until you experience whatever it leads to.” He glanced down at the spoon and gave a it a thorough lick before locking eyes with her again. “What is it you’re so curious about?” Was there some semblance of accusation? Or was it genuine curiosity that got his eye going?

“Oh, many things. It’s why I decided to go back to University. I have an insatiable curiosity. Though it has gotten me into trouble many a time and how I ended up on Oed in the first place, as much as Halai’s presence was a convenience. But here and now? All sorts of reasons to be curious now that you’ve shown up s unexpectedly in my life again. Or are you going to zip out as quickly as you did last time?”

Insatiable? Oh this woman could be trouble for him. She was younger when last they spoke. Now, she was…a woman with drive apparently. And, he naturally enjoyed such people. “To be totally honest, I’m not sure yet what I’m doing, or when. But I can definitely say I’m enjoying the now.” He said, the amused expression still on his face.

“Nothing wrong with that,” Cosgrove said.

“To be fair though, ‘zipping out’ was never my intention. Important matters came up that needed my attention. It was never personal. Wished I had stayed a bit longer back then, but things....” his demeanor had become a bit more apologetic at this point.

She dipped her spoon back into her bowl.

And then they turned to curiosity. “You didn’t like me doing that did you?” he asked with a raised eyebrow as he took another spoonful of ice cream.

Flicking her denim-coloured eyes back up to him, the playfulness had subsided. “No Michael, I did not. I had been abducted and taken to a different planet and even if things turned out okay, I was back on this colony without my sister and no clue what I was going to do with myself besides maybe attend school. So I did that, but…” She shrugged and scooped more ice cream. “It was kind of lonely. People knew Halai, but they didn’t really know me and I was a student, not a government worker. It was a hard couple of years actually. But to be clear, I don’t think you owed me anything. We barely knew each other. I just… I had gotten used to you being around on the trip back I guess.”

Michael set the spoon back down in his bowl as he listened to Kristina. His playful façade was his safe place. It was a sense of normal he felt others could simply get used to. Play around, disappear when needed, freedom. This, however, was different. This was shared experience.

“I hadn’t really considered that,” he said rather honestly as he observed her. “I sort of figured everyone on the ship at that time would go there separate ways. People don’t typically stay. I get used to the comings and goings of many people. Lots of faces in and out. Part of the business. I tend to remember the important ones though. Even back then you made an impression on me. Never forgot you. But everyone moved on. Even the resident doctor here left the ship.”

Kristina smirked. “He seemed to find a compelling enough reason,” she said, thinking of how content Halai and Akem seemed to be together.

Conrad paused as the beginnings of a grin started forming on his face. “Besides, would have done much good for me to randomly show up at places you were? I’m sure that would have been totally ok. Not creepy at all. Not in the slightest.”

That made her laugh. “True.”

“We have now though. No time like the present to get to know each other even more?” he said curiously, seeming to be genuinely interested in her for more than just her curves. She was a looker when she was younger, sure. But now…a woman. He tried his absolute best to keep his eyes trained on hers despite his thoughts.

She gestured at him with her spoon. “You make an excellent point. I guess we’ll just have to make up for lost time.” Kristina took another bite of ice cream.

“What do we do about our alternate Universe folks? I know she and I don’t owe each other anything but… she’s my sister, even if she isn’t actually.” A bewildered expression swept over her face. “It’s so weird, Michael.”
