Karilan paused a moment and thought. “You know, I think I could be. Nothing heavy… maybe silk? Bright colors? OH! I could tie my head in one! Oh yes, I think I could make that work.” and they looked at Eela and smiled wickedly. “And they have so many other uses.” and then they laughed loudly, even though a hint of red spread across their face.

Karilan

“Handy to have around,” Eela said with her own grin. There was something so freeing about being so open like this in matters where others might have deep inhibitions.

“But I have a few scarves that I think would look really nice on you. You’re more than welcome to them,” she said.

Karilan stopped dead in her tracks and turned and looked fully at Eela. “Only if you promise to let me take you out to dinner. And I will wear one of your scarves.” and they smiled at her. “But I want to go out with you. I want to be seen, and I want you to be there with me.”

Karilan

She beamed. “It would be my great honour. It’s a date,” Eela said, without the slightest bit of irony. Whatever their relationship was was undefinable. It wasn’t romantic in the sense that others might want to assume and yet it was poignant and deep. And so yes, she could call dinner with Karilan a date without any of the pressure that could accompany one. “Wow, I really am becoming a social butterfly here, aren’t I?” she said with a laugh.

~Eela

“Spreading your wings after being in a chrysalis made by someone else. Time to fly.” Karilan said and they picked up a soft pink blouse-like shirt and threw it at her and laughed. “Now… what are you wearing to your date with Mr. Jones? You may not know this, but I have become quite the fashionista in the last ten minutes, so I am pretty much an expert on clothes.” and they laughed again.

Karilan

Eela laughed and hung the delicate blouse onto a hanger. “Well, my expert, I have been oscillating between two dresses. I have this black one with silver lace on the chest and shoulders and it’s got this swirly skirt that ends mid-shin. It’s fun and also perfectly appropriate for a work event, which the first half really is. The other is this silver dress that I got with the other gals while hunting for something for the auction and the gala. Yavia picked it out and it’s this slinky material that just flows over my body and one side ends just below my knee while the other side goes a lot farther down, so there’s a bit of leg action going on,” she said with a grin. “It’s sexy and a little daring. It’s what I want to wear, but there’s that hesitation because, as I said, it’s a work thing. The arts showcase is going to be a lot of mingling with the organizers and meeting the performers. And as much as I want to just say I don’t care what anyone thinks, it… matters that I strike the right note. Does that make sense?” Sometimes Eela wasn’t sure how to exactly think about her life as a public person. It was this delicate little dance she was constantly playing whether people realized it or not.

~Eela

“So do both and don’t tell him.” Karilan said as they tossed a few articles onto the growing mound that was the donate pile. “Wear the black one to the showcase, then tell him that you need to run home and you will meet him at the restaurant or wherever you are going. Change, go meet him. And watch his jaw shatter as it hits the floor.” They paused and looked at her. “One, it will be fun for you. Two, it will show him that you want it to be more that just a convenient business outing.” They shrugged and said “A full costume change mid-date? Thats a memory he will have for the rest of his life.”

Karilan

Her eyes glittered. “That has some definite possibilities. I mean I’m tempted to just have him come back and wait at my place while I change but there is the risk that we wouldn’t make it back out for dinner,” Eela said with a throaty chuckle. “And I really do want to have dinner at this place I found.” Oh the possibilities the evening held.

~Eela

“Hence why I said meet him there. I’m sure the temptation for both of you would probably be too much.” Karilan said with a grin. “Besides, think of the look on his face when you walk in. It will be priceless, I’m sure.” They looked around for a moment and then said “Alright, I think that does it for now.” They looked at Eela and smiled. “Thank you. For… for everything, Eela. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

Karilan

She stepped over to Karilan and cupped their face with her hands, smiling with deep affection. “I am honoured to have been able to witness something so wonderful and beautiful. That I get to be even a small part of this brings me great joy, but make no mistake, this was all you my friend. You were the one who had to find the courage to look deeper and listen to your true self, to shed the worry about what others would think. And I look forward to seeing how you evolve.”

Eela dropped her hands. “I should probably get back to the office. Goodness knows what mayhem awaits me, though it’s good that I haven’t reached any urgent messages while I’ve been out.”
