“We’ve got a little over an hour before I call my parents.”

Hannah

“Oh my, whatever could we do for that long?” he asked and gave her a quick peck and said “We can unpavk one of your crates, is what we could do. Besides, I don’t want you sick to your stomach when you call your family.” and he shook his head. “Not that I don’t have other ideas besides unpacking you.”

Jason

Hannah laughed, “You always have other ideas…but so do I.” She leaned her head against his shoulder for a moment and glared at the crates sitting in the living room, “Okay.” She stood up and walked over to them and cracked a lid. Books and pictures were on the top. Under that was a blanket. Hannah didn’t keep random blankets, but she tended to be cold lately, which was so weird. She folded it and set it on the back of the couch. The rest of that particular crate was her emergency medical kit and search and rescue pack. Years of habit made her check them before she set them both in the closet by the door. That left the books and photos. “Suggestions on where to put these?”

Hannah

“Bookcase and wall?” Jason said with a laugh. “Seriously, though… you can put them anywhere. I still have stuff to unpack as well, so we can just get everything out and somewhere, and then move things as we think needs to be moved. Sound good?”

Jason

Hannah smirked, “That’s fine with me. You know I’ve never lived in an apartment. It’s always been Fleet standard quarters or my room on Catawba. Good thing you knew what to get. If you had left it up to me, I would have filled this place with camping equipment.” Hannah laughed and took a stack of books and wandered about the apartment setting books on bookshelves in each of the rooms. There was no method or reason behind what she left where. The photo frames were self adhesive and she stuck them on walls wherever they seemed to land. Hannah knew most likely everything would be moved around before they were done, so she was being totally carefree about it.

It was time to call her parents, and Hannah was sitting in front of the main comm unit. She felt nervous. She honestly wasn’t sure how her parents would take it. Not with them knowing how upset she was when Daniel disappeared. She hadn’t talked to them since. Just a couple of quick letters. Hannah sat back as the console spun the Federation symbol waiting to connect. The screen flashed as the picture switched. On the screen was an older woman, almost completely grey hair with a few black strands. Hannah! She looked off screen and waved her hands wildly for attention and signed, Everyone! It’s Hannah! There was scrapping and running and stomping and shuffling of feet and bodies and the screen was filled with people of different species, ages, genders, all signing and waving wildly. Hannah exchanged several pleasantries before a woman with Hannah’s blonde hair, just starting to show flashes of white throughout. Hannah, my baby! Hannah grinned and waved at everyone else. I need to talk to just mom and dad. I miss you all! An older man with a weathered face, laugh lines, and brown black hair, and a grey streak at his left temple appeared. Judging by his facial structure and skin tone he had some North American Tribal ancestry in his family, but oddly had Hannah’s blue eyes. Dad!

He smiled cautiously and waved. Hannah are you okay? You don’t usually write and insist on talking right away. Her mother pushed her dad in the shoulder, rocking him sideways. Maybe she just wanted to talk to us. Her father snorted with a grin.

Hannah grinned, her happy joyful self. I’m okay. I’m better than okay. I have something I need to tell you. I’m really happy, and I really hope you are… There was the sound of palms slamming on a table and chair falling over. Hannah slumped slightly. NO Hannah. This is a bad and his palms slapped together with the force of the word, idea. Do not tell me that worthless hputha has returned again. You finally have your life back you are not giving it up for him!

The whole time Hannah was signing, No…Dad no…just sit down…Dad listen…it’s not… Finally, “Dad! Stop!” He was so surprised to hear her voice he paused. Just listen, please? Her father stared at the screen for a moment, then held up a single finger and walked out of the screen. Her mother’s gaze followed him and then looked at Hannah. You know he has never liked anything you’ve told him about D-a-n-i-e-l. Just give him a moment.

It’s not about Daniel. He has nothing to do with this… Hannah sighed. Her mother nodded, Let me go get him, and she disappeared off the screen too. Hannah looked at Jason but didn’t know what to say.

Hannah

Jason stood out of the vid, but he set his hand on her shoulder. “It’ll be okay. And honestly? I like your dad. He thinks the same way I do.” and he grinned and winked.

Jason

Hannah smiled and flushed. He made her happy. There was movement on the screen and Hannah turned back. Her dad looked like he could set something on fire just by glaring at it. He helped his wife with her chair, then righted his own as sat down. Hannah… I know, Daddy. Just…listen. I have a lot to tell you. I met someone, and I want you to meet him. Her parents exchanged a surprised and concerned look. Hannah waited for them to look at her again. I met him when I was serving on the Fearless. We were together for a few months, but it just didn’t work out with our separate work. She held up a hand to stop the questions she knew would come. Mostly why hadn’t she ever said anything. His name is J-a-s-o-n R-e-i-l-l-y. She looked back at Jason. Come meet them?

Hannah

Jason almost jumped into the chair next to Hannah. Hello! he signed enthusiastically with a huge, warm smile. It is a pleasure to meet you. I have heard many great things about you both. I am sure I am a surprise to you both, but I am happy to answer any questions you have after Hannah talks to you a bit more, okay? He looked at Hannah and said low enough that the terminal wouldn’t pick it up “Tell them now or after?”

Jason

Her parents’ eyes widened in surprise at his quick appearance. Her mother was enchanted by his smile, her father crossed his arms over his chest and glared. Hannah turned to Jason. My mother, L-y-l-a. Then she made an L with her hand and moved it from one side of her nose to the other (L combined with the sign for flower) was her sign name. T-a-h-o-m-a, my father Then Hannah made a T with and drew it from her forehead to her nose making a serious/scowling face, his sign name. Her mother smiled and raised her open palms outward. Amazing, he signs! Hannah nodded, He’s fluent. Hannah waved off any comments even though her mother was almost bouncing with questions. Jason was a diplomat for Star Fleet. He came on board the Saracen before I left. She looked at Jason and bit her lip around a small smile. She looked back at her parents. Unsure what to say next Hannah decided to just blurt it out. I’m pregnant.

Lyla clapped her hands together and leaned forward excited, Hannah! How far are you? Are you coming home? You have to come home! How long will your leave be? I’ll get all your baby things out of storage. Oh I can’t believe it! She stood up and waved wildly and then signed, Hannah’s pregnant! Followed by sounds of surprise and excitement.

Tahoma looked at Hannah and his gaze softened before narrowing on Jason again. After a very very tense pause, And what exactly are you going to do about this? She might have to carry it, but you are equally responsible.

Hannah

Jason matched Tahoma’s gaze with all of it’s intensity and he said I intend to marry your daughter and raise our child in a home made of love and support and encouragement. I would like to do that with your blessing… but I will do it without it, as well. She is more important to me than anything you may think about me or the situation… and he paused long enough so the emphasis on the word would be clear… sir.

Jason

Lyla looked at her husband and broke into a huge grin like she knew her husband was suddenly the butt of a private joke. Tahoma nodded once, a thoughtful expression. That’s good. He looked at Hannah, and he should be the same for you. What are you going to do when ‘the job’ pulls you apart? What is Hannah and eventually your baby supposed to do when you get pulled away? What will you do Hannah when you get transferred again?

I have taken a position here on Oed and retired from Star Fleet, actually. So that shouldn’t be a problem. Jason said with a grin.

Lyla grinned at Jason. Oh he was smooth, had all the answers, and was quite adamant about her daughter. Lyla approved. She looked at her daughter. Hannah looked up set over her father. Normally, Hannah would laugh over Tahoma being ‘over protective.’ Instead she looked stressed and nervous. It will be okay, Hannah. Lyla remembered being overly emotional, like on a child’s swing, when she was pregnant with Hannah. It had exhausted her and driven Tahoma beside himself with worry.

Hannah leaned against Jason’s shoulder. Even with the background check, telling his parents seemed easier. I won’t be. I took a 10 year duty assignment to come here. I can’t be transferred and I can’t request one. I’m not going anywhere. And Jason..

Tahoma shook his head, He what? He has his duty, he has his job? He made a commitment? Hannah blinked, Dad… He held out his hand in a ‘wait’ gesture and looked at Jason. Those are all commendable and honorable things, but Hannah deserves someone who will put her above ALL of that. It is uncharitable of me to make comparisons, but I cannot begin to describe to you what it’s like to watch your daughter get her heart broken repeatedly by the same person.

Jason shrugged and signed Oh no… please. Try. Don’t stop on my account.

Lyla made a face and turned in her seat, Tahoma Asimina! Stop. Look at them. They are happy, and you are acting like my father. Tahoma’s eyes went wide and he tried to stare his wife down, she just crossed her arms over her chest and stared back. After a moment he shook his head and a slight smirk hinted on his lips. My wife is right. I apologize, Jason. Hannah if you are happy, you know you have my blessing. Not that not having it would stop you.

Hannah

Jason leaned forward. One. Thank you. Your blessing means a lot to us both. Two. Please know that we are both making our future together a priority. For the baby, and for us a couple. I know that the past is… problematic. But I am not the past. Hannah is not in the past. And the baby is the future. I recommend we embrace the future and leave the past in the past.

Jason

You have my blessing too if that matters at all. Lyla said with a straight face that lasted less than a second before she started to laugh. She waved her hand dismissively. I’m kidding. I have to admit I am very....surprised. You never mentioned Jason before and well you two are so…comfortable, easy with each other, I know you must have known each other awhile.

Hannah was normally a lot like her mom, but now she was just glad for the distraction. It let her take a couple of breaths. I know it seems very sudden to you both. It was just that Jason was… Her father was very spiritual even if Hannah wasn’t, like a vision. Not meant to be shared until the right time.

Lyla left Tahoma to contemplate that. She was just excited. Yes she was protective of her daughter, but it was also Hannah’s decision to decide how to find her own happiness. Well a belated, but a very excited, welcome to the family, Jason. I will admit I am very curious, but I don’t want to be one of those nosey annoying mother-in-laws. So since we just met, why don’t you just tell me what you are willing to share about yourself. I can always be nosey later. Lyla laughed.

Hannah

Jason laughed out loud, but signed. Fair enough. I was born on Earth, in the city of Annapolis on the east coast of North America. My father was an instructor at the Academy, and he and my mother just recently retired; my mother from Star Fleet as a Captain. I served in Star Fleet as a Diplomatic officer and Cultural advisor, but I was recently was given the opportunity to take on an executive leadership role with a private company here on O-e-d. I was about to turn it down, when fate brought Hannah and I back together. She had been named the Assistant C-M-O assignment here and had accepted it, so it seemed like a sign. I resigned my commission the next day and left for Oed. She came a couple of weeks later and surprised me with the news that we were going to have a baby. And I could not be happier.

Jason

Lyla grinned and clapped her hands together again, That’s so wonderful. Tahoma shook his head with a smirk and looked at Hannah, Your mother is a hopeless romantic Lyla elbowed him, I thought you loved that about me. Tahoma leaned over and whispered something that made his wife blush and she turned her attention back to the screen. Yes well…You must have been shocked! Please tell me she at least tried to do something special. Usually she just blurts things out.

Hannah made a face at her mother. Well…I tried to at least make it…fun at the spur of the moment, but the realtor kept interrupting and Jason was having far too much fun putting her in her place because she was…being rude to me.
