“Both, actually.” she said. “My parents owned a restaurant in Osaka. I grew up in the kitchen. When I was old enough, I became a chef. But I also worked for my family and learned a great deal about organizational administration… hence my current position working for the Governor. He appreciates my, as he puts it, ‘unconventional managerial perspective’.” and she laughed softly.

Cort grinned. “Well, that makes sense; the Governor is fairly unconventional himself. Were you mostly on Earth, or have you travelled at all with your work?” he asked, resting an arm on the edge of the table.

“Earth.” she said with a shrug. “This is the first time I have been off world except for a family vacation to Risa one year. What about you? Where all have you been?” The doors opened at that time and a student looked out. Dorma said “Caleb. You may begin the service.” “Yes Chef.” they said and ducked back in the kitchen.

Cort blew out a breath. “Quite a few places, actually. I’m from Vega Colony and my family thought it important to see other places, but they only do so for vacation. I was the odd one who went off and actually decided to have a life away from Vega. I travelled extensively with the Federation Red Cross, both within and outside of the Federation. Relief work, that sort of thing.”

“Relief work?” she asked with a look of curious surprise. “What kind of relief work? What did you do?” As she asked, the door to the kitchen opened and a Gand female came out carrying two small plates. She set one down in front of Dorma and one in front of Cort. “Chef. Sir. Tonight I am presenting a wilted Ancorvian greens salad with locally-sourced beet root and radish finished with a Decluzian vinegar reduction. Enjoy.” and she turned and walked back into the kitchen. Dorma looked at Cort and said “Taste. Then answer my question. This will be a complex dish so be prepared for a lot of flavor up front followed by softer undertones. And Decluzian vinegar is strong before its reduced, so…” and she chuckled as she picked up a fork and took a sample of rhe various ingredients and ate them.

“Be prepared, got it,” Cort said, gathering a forkful and popping it into his mouth. He chewed, his expression shifting from a bit of surprise to curiosity as the tastes played out. He set the fork down and wrote the response on the PaDD. *Well balanced. There is sweetness that does a lot to complement the reduction and bits some of the bitterness from the greens. The vinegar is quite the pop but not overwhelming. The radish adds a kick of spice and a great crunch.” He wasn’t sure if he and Dorma would discuss each dish but he knew he wouldn’t have the same level of detail and wanted his opinion to be his first impression.

“I can see it not being difficult to overdo the vinegar. A little goes a long ways.”

He took a sip of wine and found that it made the lingering taste in his tongue even more interesting. It was rather pleasant. He turned his attention on Fen. “So, relief work. Basically it’s exactly the sort of situations you imagine. Large scale environmental disasters, disease outbreaks, aftermaths of conflicts. Often it’s border worlds but the Federation gets asked for assistance from farther out. The common scenario is that Starfleet responds to the initial distress call and lend what aid they can. But they don’t stay there long term usually so that where we’d come in and look at the long term solutions to whatever problems they are dealing with. I was an assistant for while until they made me a project manager, but the work was still the same. It was a lot of logistics, acquiring additional supplies and people, and managing the resources we could get.”
