Joseph nodded “That could be very beneficial” Back during his Marine days he’d been surrounded by some of the most hypercompetitive, elite operators the Federation had to offer, most days consisted of training exercises to get the teams to work together or prepare for any operations. The police was similar albeit at a much lesser intensity but some of the same concepts did apply “I have the bi-annual proficiency exams coming up in about five weeks. Some of it is basic fitness, firearms proficiency, and the like. I also have de-escalation training, team building exercises, and similar large-scale plans.”

Commissioner Karlson

Eela pressed her fingertips together and nodded slowly, thinking through the options before them. “It would be useful to do colony-wide emergency training. Situations where jurisdiction becomes less obvious or isn’t the concern. I definitely think cross-training will be on a larger scale but it doesn’t hurt either to have specific groups do specialized training with your forces. While Starfleet security officers do train in procedures for civilian situations, being stationed on Oed provides an entirely different set of circumstances. Should I have McBride and Commander Cattaneo reach out to you? Or did you want to do the reaching out?”

“That would be appreciated, fewer procedures to deal with dirtside” He said with a half smile “With rumors of contact with the Vren I suspect that we may have to push up our timetable to get my people prepared for potential incidents. I wasn’t here the last time there was Contact with the Vren but I’ve heard stories”

Commissioner Karlson

Eela nodded slowly. “I think it would be a good idea to have all our ducks in row, as my old XO used to say. The thing we don’t want is to be alarmist. Calm and measured responses, and show the public we’ve thought things through and have things well in hand. I’ll have someone reach out to you in the next few days.”

“I’m still getting to know the colony. Any favourite places you recommend I check out?”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Joseph smiled at the question “I like to try new restaurants but I always end up returning to my brother’s locations, he owns several businesses in the commercial district. The Hekla hotel has an excellent restaurant if you like fine dining and he has a pub in the Karlson Blocks” He said his last name with an eye roll “It’s on one of the Commercial/residential intersections. Most of the best food can be found there, within walking distance of apartment buildings. Although Oed is primarily a Human Colony you’ll still find any type of Federation species restaurants around so if you have a preference for Andoran or Caitian food you’ll find it.”

He tapped his finger on his desk a few times “There’s this Taco truck that pops up on random locations, word of mouth mostly. They have this excellent spiced meat, not real beef but also not replicated, I think they produce it in a local lab.”

Commissioner Karlson

Her question had been intentionally open-ended and she had been enjoying the various answers people gave her. Some spoke of places to visit based in scenery or a unique way of taking in the colony. Others like Karlson delved into the food culture. She loved seeing what people would suggest.

Eela grinned. “Lots to keep me busy for sure. I’ve been fortunate to take in the farmers market for when I want to cook myself but honestly I’m on the go so much that I unfortunately eat out more than I ever might have. It’s good to know there are so many options around here.” She leaned in a little with a curious gaze. “Maybe you and your wife would be free sometime to show me one of these interesting places?” In truth it would be nice to have people closer to her age to talk with. Not that age was everything. Hardly. But it was about life experiences. She shared some of the same with Karlson and it would be nice to talk some more.

Joseph clapped his large hands together excitedly “Better yet how about you join me and Neema for dinner? I have an excellent kitchen that I rarely get to use properly and a dining room that’s been collecting dust these past few months” He smiled broadly “You’ll find that privacy is more valuable than air around here, cabinet members are known by ever colonist, especially when you start doing regular interviews with the news or podcasts. And as the lieutenant Governor there is only one person more known than you” That wasn’t strictly speaking true, Joseph was one of the more known faces just because of how long he’d been on Oed and for his brief stint as the colonies governor.”

Commissioner Karlson

Eela grinned. “Oh, I am getting a solid taste of what it means to be a public figure. It’s certainly different than being on a starship, though I’m used to the visibility. Dinner at your home sounds lovely. I would love to say ‘just tell me when and where’ but that’ a relic of the past. My assistant Cort is the keeper of my schedule and will know what evenings I have free from work things”

Joseph returned the smile with one of his own “Of course, you are also free to drop by whenever you have a free evening, we try to avoid replicating when we can. One of the benefits of my station is being able to access fresh food. Even real meat and fish on occasion” He knew that people within the federation rarely ate actual meat these days, he had grown up where there were still sheepfarms but it was still rare.

Commissioner Karlson

While she was more than willing to eat a variety of food and experience other cultures, she still had her preferences when given the option. “I don’t really eat meat but I do enjoy fish. And I will let you know when I have a free evening.” Eela couldn’t see herself dropping by as he described given how hectic everything was, but one never knew. Oed certainly seemed to hold a host of surprises on the regular.

“Well, I best get going. It was really lovely meeting you, Commissioner,” she said with a warm smile as she rose to her feet.
