“I’m sure you can.” Eddie said with a chuckle. “The Colonial government, headed by the Hyrushi/Dasca administration, has declared that the Federation needs to play ball and treat the colony differently. But a central figure in the colonial government is a barely retired Starfleet Captain, the Starfleet operations center and all of the fleet staff aren’t going anywhere. And that says nothing of the Federation resources pouring into the terraforming efforts. Does any of that seem like a contradiction in policy? You have to ask our permission but consider it preemptively granted?”

“No, not at all. Because these things are a part of the colony and we allow that. What we are demanding of the Federation is simply that anytime they want to engage in additional operations or involvement that we’ve not already approved, they ask us first before they go off making plans for the colony. We’re asking for a bit of courtesy, of respect. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think that’s too much to ask for,” Eela said.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“Not at all.” Eddie reclined in his chair. “But are you sure the Federation government and Starfleet Command share that understanding and appraisal of the situation?”

-Eddie

Eela shrugged. “I suppose we’ll find out in the weeks and months to come, now won’t we? And I can’t speak for the Federation Council, but I work with Starfleet Command enough to know if there are conversations to be had in the coming days, they’ll be had. What I can also say from my experience with the Diplomatic Corps, is once the conversations start happening properly, a path forward tends to to be cultivated. It’s not always smooth, but there is a process that tends to be allowed to unfold. We can be up front with our expectations but we also need to give everyone else time to figure out how best to meet them.”

~Eela

“And how do you think the colony will be affected in the meantime, while governments decide how they’re going to interact with each other?” Eddie was already really proud of this first episode. The Lieutenant Governor had been the perfect guest.

-Eddie

To that Eela grinned. “It’s business as usual, as we have been the last few months, and as the Governor has been unfolding since his arrival. Right now, regardless of anything else, we have a diplomatic situation before us and that requires all of us to focus and make the best of it. I think, especially knowing what we know of the crisis the Vren are facing and the footage we’ve witnessed, we want things to go well. For them. For us. If we’re going to stand up and say that Oed matters, that our voice matters, then we need to demonstrate the ability to be a true member of the galactic community.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Eddie leaned forward a little. The Vren were a complicated subject and politicians were often hesitant to speak publicly about these things. All he could hope was that Eela would still be as open as she had been. “Was the timing of the statement to the Federation Council made with the impending visit of the Vren in mind? It certainly worked out so OED is the center of the news for a while.”

-Eddie

Her demeanour shifted, but she wasn’t pulling back. Not exactly. More it was like she knew herself to be on potentially tricky ground and was going to tread very carefully. Strangely, it was something she was well versed in. Maybe once it would serve her well. “Not exactly. This is something that has been, in some ways, a long time coming. Especially given different events even before the press conference. But at the end of the day we didn’t think releasing it after the Vren delegation arrived to be very prudent. The focus, and especially our focus, needs to on those negotiations. It would do Oed and the Vren a disservice if everyone here and the rest of the Federation are distracted because Oed’s leaders had poor timing.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“The extra coverage is just a happy coincidence?” Eddie pressed a little further. He would accept the Lt Governor’s word, but not without a little pushback. “To say nothing of how much extra attention OED is getting from the Federation.”

-Eddie
