Mika walked alongside him. Séan was way taller than she was and she noticed him trying to keep his pace slower so she wouldn’t have to jog to keep up with him. She smiled sheepishly, “It was. I don’t really remember the whole night, but apparently the craziest thing I did was chat up a cute girl, so I guess it wasn’t too bad.”

~ Mika

“Oof on that being your first experience with alcohol.” Séan winced a little at the thought then nodded appreciatively at the second half of the story. “That doesn’t sound all that crazy so I think your first experience, and with bloodwine no less, was about the best outcome you could have hoped for. Most women tend to try regular wines as they dip their toes into alcohol drinking. Mine was with my dad. He distilled his own rye during the longer freighter runs we would do. Usually he would trade for the necessary spare parts or ingredients then tend to the whole thing on his off hours or when we docked somewhere. I do not recommend trying it though. Ugh, it puts hair on your chest for sure.”

Counselor Iven

Mika made a face. “That’s a no thanks from me. I’m not really interested in drinking alcohol, but when Lord Duroc offers you a mug of something.... You don’t say no.” Urg, Lord of House Duroc, was a very large Klingon. Mika had found him incredibly intimidating. “You grew up on freighters?” She asked curiously. He’d mentioned it before, she remembered, but she hadn’t had time to ask about it then.

~ Mika

“Yeah…” Séan said slowly. “My dad was always flying freighters but I was born and raised-ish on Aloha Eridani II. My mom was with me there as a medtech and my dad would stop in during a cargo run and stay for a couple months then back out to do the loop again. A little bit after I turned eight my mom was murdered by a violent patient, who was later found to have been infected by a brain chemistry altering microbe. After that it was the freighter life for both of us.”

Counselor Iven

Mika looked at him with this sad, sympathetic look. “I lost my mom, too. In… in a robbery. She owned a store. I was there. I was sixteen.” She struggled to talk about it without her voice wavering like she might cry. “A-anyway, then my dad had to step up, but he wasn’t exactly mom, so… I had to quit some of my after school activities to help look after my little brother and the store.” Mika smiled proudly, “He’s going through the Academy now. Wanted to be like his older sister.”

Séan reached a hand and patted Mika on the shoulder. “I’m sorry to remind you of your trauma by bringing up mine.” He gave what he hoped was a comforting smile but it was hard to be sure when they both shared an identical grief. “Is your brother going into psychiatry as well?”

Counselor Iven

Mika smiled back at him. This time, the smile seemed slightly forced. “It’s fine. Really.” Then she grinned, a real one, and shook her head. “Physical medicine, what I studied first. He’s going to be a doctor. He’s in his second year of study.”

~ Mika, CNS

Séan nodded in understanding. “We can always use more doctors. How is he liking the courses so far?” He spotted something in this distance and pointed it out. “Oh a fountain. We should go take a look.”

Counselor Iven

“They’re hard but he’s interested in the material and that makes it easier. Plus he’s gotta prove he can do what I can do, right?” She laughed.

“I… don’t know. Is that how it is with siblings?” Séan asked curiously.

“Uh-huh!” Mika said and laughed again. “Especially little siblings! They always want to do everything you do! But, you know, they don’t always go into the same field.” She looked up at Séan, “You’re an only child?”

The fountain was a large, three tier, circular fountain in the middle of a small square with paved paths. Cement walls made up the side of the fountain, engraved with elegant designs. Each level was slightly larger than the one above it, with small spouts to allow water down. In the lowest basin were several small coins. Like a wishing well. Along the edges of the square were benches. Behind it was a rather large building which Mika assumed must belong to one of the many companies on the planet. “Well, that’s pretty,” she commented.

~ Mika

Séan made a ‘hmm’ sound in agreement as he looked over the fountain and the benches. “I know we haven’t been walking for long but would you like to sit and watch the water? It kind of has a peaceful quality to it.”

Counselor Iven

“If you want to do that, sure!” Mika said, and then headed over to a bench and sat down. It was getting late enough daylight was fading to dusk, long shadows cast across the square. “Have you been settling in okay today? I know you said you were having trouble relaxing.”

~ Mika
