“I…I don’t want anything.” For a moment she just focused on the rhythm of her breaths lifting and lowering her hand and the feel of his hand around hers. Her breathing was slowing and her eyes beginning to unfocus some, side effects of the hypo. It didn’t stop the tear from slipping from the corner of her eye and tracking over her temple and into her hair. Her hand moved low over the very small bump. She wanted to wake up and find this was just a nightmare. Her head moved back and forth in a negative motion on the pillow. “I…don’t know, Jason. I want Alexis to be wrong, but I know she’s not.” Her eyes found his. It took effort to keep her voice from breaking, “I want it over, but I don’t know how I’ll give my consent.”Hannah
Jason bodily moved her to the side and then slid onto the couch next to her, putting his arm under the pillow supporting her head and laying on his side to look at her.
“Ok… I know this not at all how either of us saw this going. And after all we’ve done to make it work… this is just… it’s just awful. But, that being said, there are a few positives. One, it changes nothing between you and I. We are together. That is written in stone no matter what. Two, we don’t have to keep the pretense up of paternity. And that means three… you are done with Daniel forever. He has no link, no claim, no nothing with you. This is no longer about him and you… it’s just you. You… we… did everything we could. Sometimes that simply isn’t enough. Sometimes the Universe has other ideas. For now, we just have to deal with it as best we can, and do the right thing for you.”
Jason
It didn’t really matter what Jason was saying. It was simply the sound of his voice and the warmth of his body seeping into her that helped. She heard him, but the words just didn’t settle and process fully yet. It was so hard to wrap her head around doing the best thing for herself instead of her baby. It felt wrong, down to the deepest core of herself. There was no hope for her baby though, so there was only herself to care for. That knowledge didn’t absolve her of the terrible guilt and heartache.
She turned into him, breathing in his scent, her arm slipped around him. They didn’t have to pretend, and Jason didn’t have to raise a kid that wasn’t his, that he’d never thought about wanting. “Don’t tell my parents it’s Daniel’s.” She had said she would change it if she could…and now it was changed. She grew quiet after that, calmer, dozing, as the medication forced her to relax.
“Never. No one but us will know that. Promise.” he said softly.
The comms chimed, a call from Dr Fayth.
Hannah
Jason picked up the PaDD and answered the call. “Doctor, how are you?” he asked.
Jason
Ah, this was Jason. “I’m alright, concerned though. I just got off the comms with Dr Alexis Kane. The test results are devistating.” Sharah didn’t ask how he was, that would be insulting. “How is Hannah physically? Dr Kane said she had you give her benzodiazepine. Has it helped her relax any? Is there anythung I can do for you?”
“It helped a bit, but… Doctor, we are both aware of what is coming.”
“You both will need to come to the hospital, but I would like to come by now and check on her. Then we can plan how to move forward.”
Fayth, SFCMO
“I’ll send you the address. Come now, please. The longer we draw this out the more risk there is for… everyone… involved.” Jason said and cut the comms after sending the address and letting the building reception know Dr. Fayth was on her way. He looked at Hannah. “Well… life certainly isn’t boring with you, love.” and he smiled at her while squeezing her hand gently.
Jason
Sharah wasn’t given a chance to say anything else; she understood. She called for a transport after grabbing her medkit. She appeared outside the Sky Harbor building in a swirl of lights.
Hannah tried to joke a little. Did I forget to warn you? I’m high maintenance. Her stomach hurt. It was just so hard to fathom this happening, now, after everything.
You should see my moisturizing regimen. he signed back and smiled.
It was only a few minutes later when reception called up to inform him that Dr Fayth was on her way up.
Hannah
Sharah was directed to the dedicated lift and took it all the way to the top floor. She glanced at the numbers above the two doors and turned toward Hannah’s door. She knocked already taking her tricorder out.
Sharah
The door slid open and Jason stood in the doorway. “Dr. Fayth? Please come in. She is on the couch.” and he gestured to where Hannah lay.
Jason
Sharah nodded and headed in the direction, the grief was pervasive and heavy. She would weep for them later. She sat on the edge of the couch near Hannah’s legs and took Hannah’s hand and squeezed it. “I’m going to check your vitals, okay?” She moved the hand scanner over her.
Hannah shifted off her side to lay flat, “Dr. Fayth. You know, I just like being at work. Adaril wrote me out.”
Sharah shook her head and gave her a little smile, “Well Sacred Heart has all the new toys to play with.” She stared at the readings and shook her head. “Your blood pressure is still too high,” as the arm band began to beep. Sharah reached up and silenced it. “Your pulse is far too fast.” It should be lower considering the meds Hannah had in her system.
Hannah grimaced a little. “Hannah? Are you hurting at all?” Sharah continued to scan focusing over Hannah’s stomach. Hannah nodded, “My stomach. I feel sick, and my back.” She shifted a little.
Sharah pulled out a hypo and pressed it to Hannah’s neck. “That should help.” She stood up and walked out of ear shot motioning to Jason. “I’m calling a transport. She’s going into labor.”
=/\=Fayth to Sacred Heart. I need an emergency medical transport at Sky Harbor Apartments.=/\=
=/\=Acknowledged Dr. ETA 3 minutes.=/\=
Fayth
“Three minutes? Screw that.” Jason said sharply and pulled a communicator from his pocket that looked like something from a high end research lab. [O] Reilly here. Three from my location to Sacred Heart Hospital Ward Q. OB GYN on standby, Doctor Sharah Fayth attending. Go. [C] and before anyone could say anything all three disappeared from the apartment.
“Jason, no. It isn’t safe to transport her,” but Sharah’s warning was in vain. They disappeared from the apartment.
They materialized in an obvious medical clinic, but one neither woman had seen before. No windows or doors could be seen, but it was filled with all of the latest equipment, some of which Sharah and Hannah had never seen before; and all brand new. Five figures stood in masks and gowns and gloves. One, a Tellerite, walked forward and said “Dr. Fayth. Tell us what you need.”
Jason
Hannah looked around, she didn’t recognize where they were. Why…what was going on? Where were they? “Jason???”
Sharah staggered at the very sudden and immediate drop of input. She set a hand to a nearby surface to steady herself. She scanned the room looking for Hannah, and the sudden realization she could sense none of them. Ward Q is what he had said, but Sharah had never seen this place nor heard of it. She eyed Hason warily.
“What’s your name?” She looked at the Tellerite, “Patient is 19 weeks pregnant and gone into preterm labor of a spontaneous abortion. She’s suffering from acute gestational hypertension that is unresponsive to medication.”
“Understood.” was all they said and they turned and looked back at the other figures in the room. “Prep life support and the surgical frame. Have ten unit’s neutral plasma and volume expanders on standy.” The others wordlessly went into action.
By that point, Sharah had placed the familiarity of the feeling that was interfering with her telepathy. She’d never forget it. It was the geode. Of course some of that was used in the headband, but she was more than curious how it got here, and in such quantities. Hyrushi wanted it a tightly kept secret. He must know, and if not, Sharah would tell him - later. And who was Jason and what had Hannah gotten herself into?
At that moment Hannah moaned and gasped, coming out a little as a scream. Sharah hurried over to the bed and took her hand. “Hannah?” She waited for her to look at her. “I’m going to perform a surgical evacuation. We’re going to put you under okay?” She smoothed Hannah’s hair back.
Jason took her hand and said “Im right here. Just relax. You are in the best hamds possible. I promise.”
Hannah swallowed. “I’m in labor,” it wasn’t a question. Her body couldn’t hold onto the baby. “Okay.” She closed her eyes against the tears. Everything seemed distant and in a fog.
“I need to scrub.” She looked at Jason, “If you are staying, so do you.” She looked back at the Tellerite, “Prep her for the proceedure.” She followed one of the other staff out of the room.
Fayth
They didn’t actually leave the room; instead stepping behind an opaque energy field where a sterilizing field was activated. Jason didn’t say a word as the field moved all over their forms, and when it was done he went right back to Hannah.
Hannah squeezed Jason’s hand. She wanted him to stay, but didn’t want to ask him to sit through it.
The nurse helped Hannah change into a surgical gown and lie down. She was hooked up to the monitors and the anesthesia was administered. A spinal block was placed after the surgical frame was placed and soon Hannah was asleep.
Hannah
When she fell asleep, Jason stepped back and looked at the Tellerite. “She gets anything she needs.” The Tellerite said “Yes, sir.” and then looed at Fayth. “Ready when you are doctor.”
Jason
Fayth looked at Hannah’s vitals, her brain wave patterns and her K3 indicators. “Mifepristone and oxytocin.” Sharah didn’t say anything unless it was to give orders. There was a part of her that was peeved at their refusal to give names, but that was all pushed aside as she worked. Nothing mattered in that moment but Hannah. Sharah proceeded steadily not wanting to shock Hannah’s system. There was bleeding and plasma was given.
The staff in the room, wholly unfamiliar by looks to Fayth, were some of the best… and it showed. While they allowed Fayth to take the lead, their expertise was evident as they anticipated needs and had options ready even before she asked. Throughout the entire process, they said nothing except to verbally acknowledge Sharah’s orders by repeating them back to her to ensure no miscommunication.
She took a towel and wrapped the baby in it, with the utmost of care and delicacy. It was…heart breaking. She carried it to the neonatal bed and set it inside, drapping a blanket over the top. “Log the time.”
The Tellerite looked up and said “1557 hours.” softly. They glanced at Reilly who stood stone-faced, looking only at Hannah.
“Give her Bromocriptine.” One of the nurses nodded in understanding. Sharah went back to work. Ensuring the placenta and fluids were removed and the uterus healed as much as possible to prevent hemorrhaging.
Sharah stepped back from the frame. “Let her sleep, watch her BP for sudden drops. When she wakes we’ll move her.” She took a blanket from one of the other medical personnel and pulled it up over Hannah, tucking it around her.
She walked over to Jason and set a hand gently on his arm, “Physically she will be fine in a couple of days.” This was the worst part, “Is there a name you want put on the certificate?”
Fayth
Jason shook his head and said “No. Thank you, Doctor.” and then he looked at the surgical team. “And thank you. You did fine work, as usual. Follow Doctor Fayth’s directions.” “Of course, Director.” the Tellerite said and they all turned to give him space. Jason looked at Sharah and said “I appreciate everything you did.” and he looked around and then took a deep breath. “You want to talk about all of this now? Or later?”
Jason
“Hannah is my friend. I wish there was more I could have done, for all of you.” She glanced back at Hannah, “Why don’t you sit with Hannah while we finish. Then we can talk.” Sharah turned and set a stool next to the bed for him. She thanked each of the team individually. Commenting on things they did exceptionally well or their quick anticipation of a need. Sharah was genuine and sincere and it made them like her as well as respect her.
She spent several long minutes across the room next to the neonatal bed. She pulled up a stool on the other side of the biobed. Sharah had been around a lot of secrets in her life. Ones she needed to know and others that she wish she had never heard. Jason and Hannah had secrets. “So why don’t you start by telling me about this Ward Q I’ve never heard of.” Sharah had to stop herself from saying ‘inside her hospital’. She might be filling in as the Chief of Staff but it wasn’t hers. Even if that was how she felt.
