“No thanks needed. There are plenty of people he should be looking at. He is just lazy.” Ragna bent down and picked up her own basket and then thought about offering her hand. She wasn’t sure that was the appropriate gesture though. So many new people. She was supposed to know this. It was her job. “I’m glad I could help. I’m Ragna McKenzie.”
Ragna
She hesitated. It was her name, and that wasn’t a problem, but she was not used to offering it so freely. “I’m Lai Kitrian,” she said, searching Ragna for signs she should be on her guard, but the flicker within said no, it was fine. This woman could be trusted. She also watched to see if she was recognized or not. It was few and far between and Lai suspected outside of her unusual arrival it might even come up.
There was no recognition from Ragna. She had studied Oed, but hadn’t really looked at the politics. That was her sister’s job, not hers. “A pleasure to meet you, Lai Kitrian.” Ragna bowed her head formally.
She eyed her basket of vegetables. “I was just grabbing a few things, trying to see what I might like. Much of it is unusual to me, but I don’t mind trying new things.” her anxiety had seemingly passed and Lai could feel that the tension was less but she still looked over her shoulder out of habit.

Ragna looked around, “Much of it is new to me as well. I thought I was adventurous when it came to food until I moved here. Now, I find I was kidding myself. I haven’t tried nearly enough to claim to be so. I don’t mind trying things, but I have no idea what they are.” Ragna tried to sound upbeat instead of frustrated and homesick.

Everything here was a shade of something she knew, or else entirely different. It was hard to explain how hard it was not to trip over words and reveal herself. She knew that it was potentially dangerous but also that she and Akem were stuck here. There was nothing they could do about any of it. “Well, so far I haven’t brought home anything that we’re allergic to, though the risk of poisoning still remains,” she said, a tiny glint appearing in her eyes. Huh, was that a joke? When’s the last time she had made one of those? Not being on the run certainly changed a lot of things.
“Any suggestions of things you’ve enjoyed? My partner and I like bread and baked goods, but again, nothing is the same. I don’t know where to start other than basic bread. It can be my one splurge item.”
