“I haven’t had one in a very long time. I don’t remember what it feels like. I guess this place is landing spot and we’ll see what happens.” Lai walked pass the rest of the produce towards the bakery. She eyed the loaves, boules, and flatbreads. None of them jumped out and said ‘take me home’ but she grabbed a very basic loaf that she had had the other day and was perfectly fine. Simple. But then there was a case of pastries. She didn’t know what any of them were, but one of them smelled rather strongly of a spice she couldn’t place. The rolled buns were iced on top and you could see something dark sprinkled in the layers. “Do you know what these are?” she asked Ragna.

Ragna grabbed a few things as she walked. One, a large pinkish, purple, spiked dragon fruit, apples, and a few vegetables. She glanced at the loaves, but talking about home seemed to ruin her appetite for it. She smiled and took two of them out and placed in a box. “Cinnamon rolls. They are delicious. Cinnamon has a sweet and woody flavour, and slightly citrusy. Let me get you and your partner a couple to try.”

Instant suspicion flooded her face and despite her best efforts to not see everyone as a potential enemy, Lai’s brain was adamant about survival and this was non-negotiable. “What do you want in return?” she asked, forcing herself not be hostile.

“Want? Nothing.” Ragna blinked, looking confused and then very apologetic. “I apologize, I meant no offense. Truly. I only meant it as a friendly gesture. It is common among my clan.” Ragna was frustrated. Oed was so different. The people were so strange and unpredictable. So much for putting in effort. She was really trying. Everyone would tell her her temper was getting in her way again, but it wasn’t. She just felt sad, and her usual reaction to sadness was anger. She was angry at herself and Revna. She set the box in her own basket.
