“I haven’t had one in a very long time. I don’t remember what it feels like. I guess this place is landing spot and we’ll see what happens.” Lai walked pass the rest of the produce towards the bakery. She eyed the loaves, boules, and flatbreads. None of them jumped out and said ‘take me home’ but she grabbed a very basic loaf that she had had the other day and was perfectly fine. Simple. But then there was a case of pastries. She didn’t know what any of them were, but one of them smelled rather strongly of a spice she couldn’t place. The rolled buns were iced on top and you could see something dark sprinkled in the layers. “Do you know what these are?” she asked Ragna.

Ragna grabbed a few things as she walked. One, a large pinkish, purple, spiked dragon fruit, apples, and a few vegetables. She glanced at the loaves, but talking about home seemed to ruin her appetite for it. She smiled and took two of them out and placed in a box. “Cinnamon rolls. They are delicious. Cinnamon has a sweet and woody flavour, and slightly citrusy. Let me get you and your partner a couple to try.”

Ragna

Instant suspicion flooded her face and despite her best efforts to not see everyone as a potential enemy, Lai’s brain was adamant about survival and this was non-negotiable. “What do you want in return?” she asked, forcing herself not be hostile.

~Lai Kitrian

“Want? Nothing.” Ragna blinked, looking confused and then very apologetic. “I apologize, I meant no offense. Truly. I only meant it as a friendly gesture. It is common among my clan.” Ragna was frustrated. Oed was so different. The people were so strange and unpredictable. So much for putting in effort. She was really trying. Everyone would tell her her temper was getting in her way again, but it wasn’t. She just felt sad, and her usual reaction to sadness was anger. She was angry at herself and Revna. She set the box in her own basket.

Ragna

Lai was silent for long moments, detecting the undercurrent of emotions in the woman. She hadn’t mean to upset her. She sighed. “You didn’t offend me,” she said softly. “It’s just that where I come from, especially after the last few years, no one offers anything for free. Yours is not the first… gift I’ve been offered since we arrived here, but it’s hard to not assume the worst. Please, I would like to try the cinnamon buns, if the offer is still open?” She was not used to kindness away from her home village and Akem. Oed was proving to be a bizarre but interesting place, and the people were continually surprising.

Ragna seemed to relax slightly. “Where I come from, we share everything we have with our clan. I know what a blessing that is, but sometimes I forget how strange or uncomfortable that can be to others. I am still trying to adjust to everything.” Ragna berrated herself for forgetting she had already noticed Lai was uneasy. She needed to be more careful. She took the box from her basket and handed it to her. Ragna gave her a warm smile, “Yes, of course it is. I do hope you enjoy them, but if not it should be an interesting experience.”

Ragna

As her fingers slipped around the side of the box, Lai felt something shift. It was tiny, but it was there. What it was, was hard to define though. “Thank you,” she said as she set the box in her basket. As she wandered, she let herself be open. It was hard, but something about this place told her she could be who she was here. The Amagray had no power. “You spoke of a clan. That is a group of people, yes?” Tyrellians once had tribes, a long time ago, but those were back in the ages before they found themselves truly as a people and claimed their birthright.

Ragna spotted some kind of fruit turnover looking thing. She didn’t recognize the fruit, but took two for her and Seamus to try. “It is. We are made up of hundreds of families, linked by shared ancestry, location, beliefs, and community.” She paused, “Well probably near a thousand different families now. I need to do a census. My sister married the head of another clan and we’ve grown exponentially. It’s really wonderful to see everyone come together.”
