“Oh, there are all sorts of entertainment places. Some more obvious than others. Some by invitation only. Others are the kind you stumble upon by accident. Some you best not enter at all,” Jonathan said, his blue eyes glinting.

He leaned back in his chair. “What do you know of the Vren?”

Captain McBride, Starfleet CO

Séan narrowed his eyes at the unexpected question in response to his question. “I don’t currently know anything about the Vren. I was not supplied with a briefing before my posting here.”

Counselor Iven

McBride maintained a neutral expression. Interesting. Not getting a briefing was one thing, but Oed was all over the Federation news. It was hard to miss what was going on given how history making these events were, unless you weren’t keeping an eye on the news at all. He was surprised someone set to help with people’s mental health wasn’t at least curious about the environment he had been sent into given that it wasn’t your usual starship or base assignment. It certainly coloured his perception of Iven a little. “I see,”he said finally. “Well, you’ve entered a potential powderkeg, Lieutenant, and it would behoove you to get familiar with the situation here quickly. Oed has a history of conflict with the the Vren, whom are our closest neighbour outside the Federation. People have died here. But there is an environmental crisis happening on their world and at the same time they are going through something of a cultural evolution and becoming less xenophobic. They’ve reached out the Federation and Oed for help. Historic diplomatic talks about to happen here in short order, and people around here are understandable nervous, scared, excited, curious. You name it, someone is probably feeling it.”

“Oof. I can understand why everyone has been so tense now. I thought Lieutenant Mika was overly anxious when I first met her but with the proper context it’s making sense. I’ll do some research when I get settled into my quarters so that I can understand the stressors and trigger points associated with this historical event.” Séan said with a nod and mental note to himself.

Jonathan nodded. “It’s been a long time since the last attack, but there are people living here who were around for it, so there are tensions and no one is minimizing the trauma some people have gone through. But the most important thing we and the government are stressing is that the Vren of today are not the same Vren we had conflict with. And from what I understand from Captain Dasca, if their Ambassador is anything to go on, the upcoming talks could be quite positive.”

Captain McBride, Starfleet CO

“I certainly hope so.” Séan said then took another sip of his coffee. “I’m a big advocate for peace and tranquility. Working with people overcoming wartime trauma is very taxing mentally for both patient and counselor.”

Counselor Iven

“War is a strong word for what happened here. It was a series of raids essentially. They objected to the colony’s presence because they felt they had some claim to the planet, even though they had never settled here.” McBride threw his hands out to the side. “Their stance seems to have changed, and I would daresay they have other priorities. But there is plenty of information in the database, and at the museum, though you won’t be able to go there until after the gala.”

Captain McBride, Starfleet CO

“Conflict, aggression, territory disputes, the scale may be different but the effects on the individuals affected have shown to be nearly identical, hence the tensions.” Séan replied though mildly to take any sting from the comment. “Is there anyone from Starfleet that has a traumatic experience with the Vren? Will there be any concerns or anyone specifically to sit down with?”
