Séan had gotten free of his duties for the day, well all except for the one that got put off and forgotten about. He sighed for the millionth time as he made his way to the infirmary. He really didn’t mean to forget the required physical but time had gotten away from him. He arrived at his destination, took a breath and straightened his uniform, then entered into the waiting area. He moved to the reception desk and gave the person sitting at it a warm, if slightly shy smile. “Hello. I’m told that this is where physical for Starfleet personnel can be done.”

Counselor Iven

The medic at the desk smiled, “Of course, Lt. We can take care of that.” The man slid a palm biometric reader towards him. “If you will scan your palm the computer will pull up your medical file.”

Séan put his palm on the reader.

The man nodded and transfered the file to a PaDD. “This way.” He led him to a biobed about halfway into the room and flipped on the sensors. “Have a seat. Dr. Fayth will be with you in just a moment.” The medic walked over to a short, ebony curly haired woman in Medical blue and handed her the PaDD. She took it with a smile and then turned back to the child and father she was with. She spoke with them a moment longer and then gave the girl a lollipop as they left.

He sat on the biobed and waited. The wait wasn’t long and his mind wasn’t bored.

She walked over and set the PaDD down. “Lt. Iven. It’s nice to see you. I’m Dr. Fayth. How are you settling in?” As she spoke she pulled out and flipped open a tricorder. Pulling out the hand held wand, “May I?”

Fayth, SFCMO

“Hello Doctor Fayth.” Séan returned the greeting with his rumbling deep voice. “I’ve been settling in alright. A planet is so much different from a ship or a starbase that I still haven’t quite adjusted to not feeling that vibration.”

Counselor Iven

Her obsidian eyes danced, “That does take some getting used to. Ancient seafarers used to report getting land sickness after being at sea for long stretches of time. Experiencing any nausea or vertigo now that you’re planetside?” Her hand moved over and around him as she took basic scans and then compared them to his last recorded physical.

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan shook his head as the medical scanning commenced. “Nothing like that fortunately. My balance isn’t affected by the change in location. It’s just the ambient feeling is different. I’ve spent the majority of my life in space so going planetside always takes some adjustments. Even Earth standard gravity varies almost imperceptibly on different ships. My childhood was on Alpha Eridani which is heavier than Earth and then the rest of my life in space, so every change is new.” The scan would line up with his last physical about two weeks prior. He showed to be in good health with a surprisingly low body fat given his stature. His records would show that he had a scar circling his right thigh that scar removal treatment had been refused.

Counselor Iven

She smiled softly. “I had a similar but opposite experience, the first time I went into space. The constant vibration took some getting used to.” She slipped the scanner back into her tricorder and closed it. “You have some inoculations that haven’t had a booster in awhile. Being on a colony this size and the number of refugees arriving, we’re requiring everyone close to time or it’s been over 5 years to get them. I don’t see anything in your file against inoculations. Is it alright if I give them to you?”

Fayth, SFCMO

“Yes, please.” Séan said as he nodded at Sharah with smile. “I think they were supposed to do all of that before the transfer here but everything ended up being a bit of a cluster. My shuttle was five days late, I didn’t get a briefing or any material to read, and the pilot was doing the run here for the first time so they had no idea what I was about to walk into to. Which made my meeting with Captain McBride show me how woefully unprepared I was. I’ve been handling my case load, researching everything I can find regarding the Vren and their impact and historical significance on Oed V, and try my hardest to not put my foot into my mouth with Lieutenant Mika.”

Counselor Iven

“The situation with the Vren is tense and promising.” Sharah stepped over to a cabinet and after entering a code and pressing her palm to the scanner it opened. She loaded a hypo and walked back over. “Oh, I think you’ll be fine. I was one of Lt Mika’s cadets. I have stuck my foot in my mouth plenty of times. She won’t hold it against you. Though she’ll remind you if necessary.” The Betazoid doctor laughed. She pressed the hypo to his arm and there was a faint pop-hiss. “You might have a low grade fever over the next day, but it should go away. You can come back if you need to.”

She glanced at the PaDD again. “Your record shows you were on medical leave for a year. Tell me about that.”

Fayth, SFCMO

“I was attacked by a patient during a session. I shouldn’t have turned my back to them in their agitated state but I was hoping that some tea would calm them down.” Séan grimaced slightly at the thought. “In the very short time that they hit me in the head and pounced on me, they nearly severed my leg at the thigh before the shipboard AI reacted and beamed me to sickbay and them to the brig. The rapid blood loss and head trauma had me out of it for a couple of days. After recovery, at least physically, it was recommended that I take some leave before jumping back into it.”

Counselor Iven

Hmmm, that was always a risk. She and Yavia had spoken about that just the other day. “I’m glad your ship AI was so sophisticated. How is the leg doing? Any pain or stiffness? Did you finish your physical therapy?”

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan smiled a bit wryly. “Oh yeah, I got my physical therapy done. After recovery and getting the okay to continue my leave out and about, I went to a couple of different planets to do rock climbing. Definitely put my leg through its paces with that. There’s some pain from time to time but I don’t think it’s a physiological cause. More likely that it’s psychosomatic.”

Counselor Iven

Fayth nodded, “That’s a good possibility.” She flipped open the tricorder and scanned the area, “You still have some scar tissue there. Bundled tissue like that can cause slow blood flow. When it hurts I would suggest using a warm compress, damp is better, or,” she walked over to another cabinet and came back with a small jar, “this. It’s a hot cold muscle rub. It will help the tissue relax and promote blood flow. If the pain gets worse, I expect you to come back. If you think it’s psychosomatic I expect you to speak to Lt Mika or another counselor about it.” She grinned, “Lt Mika is very fond of reminding us all that we do not diagnose or treat ourselves. Yes, I have had that lecture from her, so I give you that rule so you may avoid having to hear it for yourself.”

“Now what else can I do for you, today?”

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan blinked at the whirlwind of information given to him as he took the jar of muscle rub. “I appreciate the rub and the advice doctor. I would like to kindly remind you however that my mental health status is part of our doctor/patient confidentiality. I’m not ready to disclose this to anyone yet and Lieutenant Mika is not my primary mental health counselor. I’ve had a year of frequent check-ups with someone who was and what pain I experience from time to time is manageable. If that changes and becomes an issue I will of course come back to see you and then I’ll decide whether I’ll disclose it to my superior.”

Counselor Iven

Fayth paused and gave him a long contemplative stare. “I was not suggesting, Lt, that you disclose this to your superior. I was giving you medical advice that if the pain worsens and you feel it is psychosomatic that you seek out a mental health professional. Lt Mika or someone else. If you don’t wish to discuss it with her, that is your right as the patient. If you have a mental health counselor that is willing to do distance session with you, that is quite good. I more than understand the need and trust put into someone and not wanting to start over with someone new.”

She set the PaDD back down. “Now, as for doctor/patient confidentiality, I am quite well aware of that. We do not gossip or disclose things about our patients here on Oed. I do not tolerate that type of behavior. However, considering my advice, that I am sure you would give your own patient, caused you to feel the need to go on the offensive, might indicate a need for some self-reflection on why. I assure you, your rights and autonomy as a person and patient are safe here.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan nodded slowly and responded with a soft voice. “My apologies if I caused offense Doctor. I did not mean to call your professionalism into account. I had heard from Lieutenant Mika that you and her are best friends and my concern, though clearly unwarranted, was that some hint of my condition may have made its way to her ear. I respect her so far with what little I know of her and her position as my superior, but I’m not there yet.”

Counselor Iven

Fayth shook her head. “You have a right to insist on your privacy. And I do understand where you are coming from. Trust is a hard thing, and our injuries, physical and emotional, are very private and personal things. Yes, Lt Mika and I are friends, but she will not hear of it from me, unless I’m required for your well being to consult her for her psychological expertise. The truth is, Lt Mika would have me, or anyone else, on report for such a grievous error.” She gave him a genuine smile, “I do mean it though. If it gives you problems come back, and we’ll proceed from there.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan nodded again though more energetically and with a smile to match Sharah’s. “Of course doctor. If a problem arises I will quickly be back in to see you. You have my word.”

Counselor Iven

“Well, I see nothing on your scans or record that is cause for concern. You can return to work and mark this task of your list.” She turned the biobed off and stepped back. “Is there anything else before I let you go on your way?”

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan stood up from the biobed and mentally noted that Mika was right in that Sharah was similarly short like her. “I don’t believe so doctor. Thank you for the painless experience. If you’re ever in need of someone to talk to professionally or personally, I hope you’ll keep me in mind. I’ve been told that I’m a decent listener.”

Counselor Iven

“We aim to help, however we can.” People’s height over her didn’t even phase Sharah anymore. Everyone was taller than her. “It’s a bit of a requirement for our work, is it not? To be good listeners. I appreciate the offer, Lt. I might take you up on it sometime. Welcome to Oed.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Séan nodded his head in acceptance of their profession requiring them to be good listeners. “Thank you doctor. I hope that I can do some good while I’m here. I hope that you have a good rest of your day.” And with that Séan gave a small of in parting and left the infirmary to head back to his quarters.
