The Star Fleet commander she’d spoken to had suggested she speak with the head medical officer. Caitlyn had been under the impression that Oed and Star Fleet didn’t get along. She hoped she wasn’t sticking her foot in a mess. But she sent off a request to speak to one Lt Cmdr Sharah Fayth, Star Fleet Chief Medical Officer. She included that Cmdr Korczak suggested she speak with the head doctor and awaited a reply.

Sharah got a request from a woman who wanted to discuss an out reach program. She started to send it to Ano, but Korczak had sent her to Sharah. She replied quickly, offering several times to speak to the woman. When she spoke to Ano about it, he laughed softly. “You are the chief of staff. They need to just make it official. No one wants anyone else in the position. I’ll even put off retiring if they will.” Sharah just shook her head. She would have to leave Star Fleet. That was a thought for later.

The day of the call, Sharah had Ano with her. She had been on Oed over a year now, but Ano knew better than her about the colony. When the call connected she took in the woman. The two doctors recognized immediately Dillon was blind. “Hello, Ms Dillon. I’m Dr Fayth, the chief
medical officer for Star Fleet here on Oed. I have Dr Helaky with me.”

“Hello Ms Dillon, “Ano said in his gentle voice. “I am Dr Helaky, and the assistant chief of staff for Sacred Heart Hospital. How can we help you?”

Caitlyn appreciated them both speaking and introducing themselves. Also for telling her there was more than one person on the call. She wasn’t able to see that. “Hello, Doctors.” She was more confident today in speaking with people. She had gone through a couple of these conversations and the one with Cmdr Korczak had helped tremendously in helping her focus what she wanted to say and how to say it.

“I work with a sanctuary that helps victims of violence. We have a small group of people who are moving to Oed and we would like to open a sanctuary there to continue the work. We won’t be arriving for a few more months and it will be another two or three before we have a facility set up, but I wanted to reach out now in order to make contacts. When I spoke to Cmdr Korczak at social services he said you were a friend and would be able to point me in the right direction.”

Sharah smiled, pleasantly surprised that Korczak called her a friend. Ano chuckled quietly at the pleasure that statement caused the younger woman. “Well we can certainly use an organization like that.”

“We have counselors and a social services agent who work here at the hospital. They would be the primary people to offer a referral or contact you about the people who might best benefit from your help,” Ano said. “What type of services do you offer, Ms Dillon?”

Fayth and Helaky

“We provide secure housing, food, shelter. We have a counselor and nurse on staff. We also have a doctor that works with us. We make connections to legal support, job, and life skill training. Sometimes our residence choose to stay with us and some move on. We have become a family, our own little community. Our primary mission though, is to provide a safe and secure place for them to stay while they heal and deal with any legal issues they are facing,” Caitlyn explained.

Sharah nodded, realized Dillon couldn’t see her, and spoke, “Alright. Your medical and counseling staff have to be licensed by the Federation Medical board to practice. They must also be registered with Sacred Heart and are subject to evaluations just like all the other staff.”

“If you have medical equipment on the facility, those are also subject to regular inspection by the Social and Medical Services department,” Ano added.
