Pangolin slowly nodded “Understandable” He didn’t mind the outburst, such things were expected with loved ones of murder victims “What can you tell me about the relationship with Mr. Jones and the Lieutenant Governor?” He asked in the same tone as before.

DCI Pangolin

“Nothing that most people don’t already know. Dash bid on her evening at the charity bachelorette auction and it was a public event they attended followed by dinner. It’s the sort of thing that the made social news on Oed, but for the most part have kept things pretty discreet. It’s their own business and I not only didn’t object, but didn’t feel it was my place to. What I do know for sure if that they seemed to make each other quite happy, and this was happening amongst the other dramas in the Lieutenant Governor’s life that went public.” She was speaking of course about the incident with Dasca’s ex. “It didn’t deter them at all, and in fact, I think because they realized out of the incident that they shared some common life experiences in that way, it made them closer.”

Pangolin wrote notes on his pad without looking down “I would need a list of Mr. Jones’ movements for the past few weeks from your office, any places he went in his official capacity, meetings, and the like. You can have your office contact Central for information on where to send it” He said as if he was only just realizing this before moving directly to the next question “Had there been any changes in his personality, you mentioned some addition stress he wasn’t speaking about. How did he react?”

DCI Pangolin

Ironically, until this coming week, her ‘office’ had consisted of her and Dash. But this information was something she had access to and it would be easy enough to sort out. “Umm, well, I had observed that he seemed… concerned about something. I asked him about it, but as I said, he wasn’t ready to share it with me, but was concerned about how it might affect me. This concern of his was in part about his relationship with Dasca, which I reassured him about, but this other matter I have no context for. I do know that he kept it out of his work and it was really only in small moments when it was just us that I could tell something was bothering him. Dasca noted this as well, but neither of us knew what it was about. She did say he had intended to tell her today when they had lunch, but obviously that never happened,” she said, forcing herself to breath.

Ren held her hand and gave it a squeeze.

“Did Jones have any direct contact with any members of the Vren delegation?” He asked, throwing the investigatory version of a curveball.

Commissioner Karlson

“Yes,” Jeannette said simply. “Though after our official greeting it was limited to the gala. He mingled and spoke with various people during the event and we were supposed to debrief fully at the breakfast meeting we had planned for this morning.” She understood why people would want to explore any links to the Vren but it made no sense to her given what she knew about the Vren and Ambassador Kek. There was just too much at stake here.

Pangolin nodded “Did he or anyone from your staff, well you included, of course, ever receive negative feedback in the last few months? I believe the term hate-mail is a colloquial word for it.”

Commissioner Karlson

She bobbed her head. “Yes and no. Nothing so strong as hate mail, but you have to remember that Dash and I are it as far as staff. We weren’t sure what would happen with the Vren and if the embassy was even going to happen. So there are no other staff except for the security details. We’ve been in the process of hiring for the embassy and that was going to be a focus this week. So most things went through Dash and he told me if there were any negative messages. Everything was sent to my head of security, but nothing was ever flagged as a concern to follow up on. People were angry when we first arrived, and even my son faced issues at school, but it came down to people who themselves or their families had experienced the Vren attacks. They’re scared, Detective, and I and dash were the obvious source of this because we brought the Vren to Oed.” Jeannette shrugged. “We expected as much when we were brought into the situation, and it’s not the first time we’ve faced opposition.”

She tapped her fingers on her thigh for a moment before she spoke again. “If there was anything from anyone that Dash received that was that serious, he never said anything to me, which would be an unusual situation. We’re very open with each other. The only situation that is unrelated to work that I know of is an old friend he met with a few days ago. He described it as a tense lunch that drew some attention when voices were raised, but this friend was wanting his help, not a conflict. It was sorted out and everything seemed fine after that.”
